cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Amoeba Hollywood had 1.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 05:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, gents.

Either through arts & crafts or amazon, I'm looking at around $18 US which isn't bad. I'll wait til payday.

Does Amoeba do online sales? (I'm in Portland, OR y'see)

righteousmaelstrom, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they're sold out. This is readily available online through the usual channels if you'd like to preview it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Righteous,

Have you tried Half.com?

I got mines for $11.84 (plus $2.49 s/h).

nader (nader), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah...that's better. Thanks, nader!

righteousmaelstrom, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like this album. Not as good as Heart, but then few things are. Maybe I'm missing the synthpop slant.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

What you talkin' 'bout Willis??! The synthpop is still there!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Pettiness and Passion Heard From Up North (you can use my l/p: moo1234)

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 30 December 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

nice! now if they'd only come to new york again.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 30 December 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Ganbare Goemon (ex machina), Thursday, 30 December 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 30 December 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 30 December 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

jon has a sensitive side.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 30 December 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

is that where you aim your arrow to kill him?

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 30 December 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"Bow to the target,
Blame cupid, cupid"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 30 December 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't expect to like this as much as I do, it's ridiculously charming.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 31 December 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Amoeba Hollywood has a number of copies now ($20 USD).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I saw that the other day and wondered if you had bought a copy yet!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

they haven't released anything bad yet.

"the comeback EP" was pretty bad. though the disc was clear and had a pretty rainbow on it. I still like "Nightsongs" the best. and the hot keyboardist

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

there don't seem to be any particular songs on the new album that really stand out as pop-gems like "my radio" or "elevator love letter" or the "this charming man" cover.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I saw that the other day and wondered if you had bought a copy yet!

They actually had like 1 copy that I managed to snap up in mid-november. What's the deal with Canadian imports being so much more difficult to obtain than UK or Japanese!?!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought this would be about Micahael jackson 's Pepsi ad .

pepsi kid, Tuesday, 4 January 2005 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It's better than their live show thats for sure. I'm still not convinced that the male need sing any song.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

how can you hate on the magical torquil? He was the voice of Bill Badger!

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Because he came off as a watered down Fred Schneider.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Here J0n I was trying to figure out if I would like this band and this was the editorial review of the other album I found on Amazon.

14 tracks of pure heaven. Celestial slices and sidereal sounds. 'Nightsongs,' the long-awaited debut album from Stars contains beautiful beats, heartfelt lyrics, and enough injections of Morrissey, Marr, Derrick May, Bjork, The Blue Nile, New Order, Frazier Chorus, Style Council, Electronic, Marvin Gaye, The Chimes, and De La Soul to move St. Etienne and all the angels up in heaven to tears. Tears of joy. Salty tears the likes of which they've never wept before. But it's not too late. It's never too late for 'Nightsongs.' A million dancehall dreams will be built around these words and rhythms. Most of those dreams will be shattered: She'll break your heart. He'll never call. You'll never even say a word. All else might vanish, but these songs will last. Painful and perfect reminders of the hope. Reminders of that salvation in desperation, the living and the moving, the dancing and the grooving. Those moments of madness and sadness, of elation and vibration! These songs are already playing in your head. You can almost hear them. Put this disc in your system, turn it up and just let the music flow. A dizzying array of words will fall from the mouths of Stars, while bandmates Torquil Campbell, Chris Seligman and their gaggle of electronics and associates play poet to your past and pervert to your present. They even put "motherfucking" to use in a way that is both tactful and sublime. Their clubby cover of the Smiths' "This Charming Man" is sure to win them some instant fans, but their original compositions will have this band living up to their moniker in no time. The soft revolution starts here!

HACK LA VOMIT

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 4 January 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The AMG one ain't too much better.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

How do they compare with The Arcade Fire? Rilo Kiley?

don, Tuesday, 4 January 2005 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

How do they compare with The Arcade Fire?

OH FUCK OFF

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

less bleak goth spookiness then arcade fire. more beats and bleeps and sweetness and (way) better singing then Rilo Kiley.

and thankfully, bad reviews (and that one is horrid, "nightsongs" is hardly dancey at all) don't mean bad music!!!!!!!!!11111111

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks bnw.

don, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, I sort of like that review. Also, the singing on Rilo Kiley, at least on "Portions for Foxes", while a bit overwrought, is excellent. Also, Torq's vocals aren't expendable because the music would be just pretty without him. His weird venom, although it sounds histrionic at times, really make the emotional component of the songs very strong. He's flawless on "Elevator Love Letter". Amy Millan is for me the virtual second coming of Bilinda Jayne Butcher, she's a celestial air raid siren.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't done a 'portable' CD80 yet, but it will definitely include:

"Elevator Love Letter"
"Ageless Beauty"
"Counting Stars on the Ceiling"
"Look Up"

and many many more.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ageless Beauty" video in wma format.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer OTM.

"Look Up" is incredible, like a sweet worm wriggling under your skin!

David A. (Davant), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

'Look Up' is absolutely gorgeous; I'd add 'Death To Death', 'Sleep Tonight', 'Don't be Afraid To Sing', and 'Tonight' to that list.

The Comeback EP is really lame, despite the awesome clear CD.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

my stars CD80 in chronological order, please rearrange as you like:

counting stars on the ceiling
my radio
going, going, gone
on peak hill
the very thing
better be heaven
tonight
what the snowman learned about love
elevator love letter
heart
time can never kill the true heart
look up
don't be afraid to sing
ageless beauty
reunion
the big fight
what i'm trying to say
sleep tonight
soft revolution

...anyone who listens to that and doesn't fall completely in love with this band... god help you.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd swap 'Reunion' for 'Your Ex-Lover Is Dead' and 'On Peak Hill' for 'Death To Death', but otherwise that's an excellent list.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

ehh.. death to death was never one of my favorites. the chorus is annoying. but i don't dislike the song.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I just like it for the massive 3 min. outro and the bassline.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I am gonna listen to all 3 albums tonight and cohere some real thoughts on SYOF for tomorrow. But so help me, I am in love with this band.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"the big fight" is all about the 3 minute outro and the bassline.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"set yourself on fire" is outro heaven.

in retrospect, I would like to change my response to Tomaggrobot to:
http://parentsofbpkids.freeservers.com/Words/kisses-bambilove.gif

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

good mix cutty. Mine will be very similar, although I will also be adding "Death to Death" - it's almost like a Technique-era New Order tribute!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine will also include "Romantic Comedy"!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 10 January 2005 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

NEWSFLASH: I love this album. 3rd time's the fragging charm.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

ok i also want to switch "reunion" with "set yourself on fire" as derrick suggested.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, this is a very nice album. personal favourites: "you ex-lover is dead," "ageless beauty" and the fourth track (whatever it is called).

this will be a great "summer record," although it is helping elevate my mood amongst the torrential downpour which is now Vancouver.

is the keyboardist the female vocalist? becuz she seems hot. i love her voice much.

it is indeed very postal service-y. i think i like the postal service cd a bit better. but syof could grow on me. it already is.

my friends who like poppy, accessible stuff are gonna love this.

i hope this record get its due. but i hope it doesn't become too huge. ;)
