Why were Simpsons tie-ins so popular back then? It seems strange to me now, even though the show is still (frequently) brilliant.

because it was a massive phenomenon at the time. sky was in its infancy so people aspired to getting satellite and being able to watch the simpsons. plus back then, it was Bart, not Homer who was the figurehead for the show, so it was firmly being marketed at kids.

I never had this, but I had a soundtrack album with like 40 tracks on it.

Total classic.

The soundtrack was Songs In The Key Of Springfield and was exactly what people wanted: the "hits" from the show.

Sing The Blues, on the other hand, is the classic example in my mind of why record labels do cutouts, when I think back on all the unwanted copies of Sing The Blues collecting dust at the end of the Tower clearance section in 1992. I mean that literally. Part of my job was to dust them. It didn't help their sales any.

Groening should set up a reunion show for this at the next ATP.

it's funny cos this must have come out right when the show was just coming out and none of the characters had been fully developed. A boat show? Seriously? Plus is that supposed to be Homer singing on "Hail Hail Rock'n'Roll"? And there's more made of Bart and Lisa not getting on, whereas were it made today it would be songs about Homer and Bart.

Lisa Simpson singing "God Bless the Child" was a real precursor to Kate McKinnon singing "Hallelujah" as Hillary on SNL.

BB King did everything back then, sitcoms and cartoons in addition to more prestigious stuff. He wanted to be THE ambassador of the blues.

I think I heard Lisa's "God Bless the Child" long before I even knew who Billie Holiday was.
