My very first article I had to hand in is about Limp Bizkit. It didnt have to be, it was "music" in general so that the lecturer can "get our style". 300 words of utter quality.

Ronan, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I quickly traded the cd for Tool's "Undertow".

This is a definite step up, though, I have to give him that.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like the "Zach's acceptable because he's neither white nor gay" argument. Sometimes I forget the rules about stuff like that. I'm all like, "Wait, I'm black but first-generation American and heterosexual, so I can be in this post-rock band, right?" And then I turn to the other guys in the practice room and say things like, "Hey, man, you're Filipino, stop playing the drums so emo-y" and "Hey, if you're black and playing the vibraphone, you've got to sound more jazzy." It's just so hard to keep track sometimes.

Nitsuh, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sheesh, I mean I hate'em too, but I'd never waste so much time writing about them at such length. And what kind of a name is Misti anyway?

Sean, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I find it hard to believe that someone can get so upset about LB, who like the rest of the nu metal crew have based their entire career on Faith no More.

tom, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dude, you guys actually read all of this? Suckers!

Ally, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And you didn't? ;-) It is entertaining, to be sure.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, dude, that's like 8,000 words about how much this guy hates Limp Bizkit cos he thinks Misti's a bitch and he thinks that clown and ball tongues have meaning (I'm reading the last paragraph, the bit visible when you scroll all the way down to type). You think I wanna read that? Maybe if I was really bored, but if I had that urge I could go and reread all these Far Sides that Joe gave me, there's one that has trained bears being pulled around on balls, and they have muzzles on and one of them has taken off his muzzle and is all "Well no, these things just snap right off!" Now that is the bomb.

Ally, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally speaks the truth. When ILE implodes in May 2032, I'm starting a Far Side Archive right here.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not really entertaining at all, ironically or otherwise. Kind of sad. Redundant up the wazoo. The best thing to come out of it is Nitsuh's commentary on musical profiling. Nitsuh's my hero.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think you're all missing the point of how entertaining it is watching somebody waste a lot of time and effort on something so paltry. Call it the bad movie principle.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I mainly found it amusing that someone who harbors such a profound hate for LB still knows so very much about them, right down to the details of Fred's love life and the tour's corporate sponsorship.

It's weird how that happens when you're young and like music but get all of your musical information from two really limited sources (MTV and Clear Channel) ... you have all of this free time to spend thinking about music, but nothing to think about beyond the eternal TRL conflict between boy-bands and nu-metal. But you're oh-so- passionate about it at the same time ...

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

six years pass...

Great thread!

They're reforming...

Neil S, Friday, 3 October 2008 10:59 (seventeen years ago)

I like how you say "I traded the CD for Tool's 'Undertow'" as if that's any better.

rjberry, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

Good handle too.

Neil S, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

tool aren't in the same universe as limp bizkit, come now

100 tons of hardrofl beyond zings (Just got offed), Friday, 3 October 2008 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

They're both infinitely awful. Apparently some maths states that there are different sizes of infinity, but it's arcane, and so is discussing whether Tool are less intolerably bad than LB.

rjberry, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)

Fair amount of Tool love (so to speak!) around here isn't there?

Neil S, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)

As long as there are people who smoke too much pot and pseudo-intellectuals Tool will have fans.

rjberry, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not a "Tool fan" by any means, but from a distanced, non-rabid perspective, plenty of the music they've made has been high-quality, and stratospheric compared with the diseased teenage friggings of Durst and company. Most of the "pseudo-intellectual" trappings are actually firmly tongue-in-cheek FYI.

100 tons of hardrofl beyond zings (Just got offed), Friday, 3 October 2008 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

Most? So not all. So they're self-parodic? Does that make them less worthless? Donnie Darko has jokes in it, but it's still an awful film.

The only way you can defend Tool is in terms of music. Lyrically they're more offensive than pop pap because they pretend to be something other than pop pap. So you can defend them in terms of hooks, of which their music isn't void. But neither is LB's.

The Slash My Father Wrote (DJ Mencap), Friday, 3 October 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

I prefer to observe lyrics as part of the music, and Tool have a musical chemistry that incorporates both vocals and lyrics into the mood of the music in a far more interesting, involving manner than Limp Bizkit ever could. They have one-eyed, over-reverent fans, as do all bands, but why let that detract from the value of music that understands rhythm, melody, timbre, progression, tension and so many other facets of aural art (lol I'm beginning to sound like one of their FANS aren't I) that Limp Bizkit, a craven, corporate crock of shite aimed at a moronic youth audience, simply cannot match.

100 tons of hardrofl beyond zings (Just got offed), Friday, 3 October 2008 14:42 (seventeen years ago)

TBF I'd say Fred Durst's lyrics fit into the mood of the music pretty well

The Slash My Father Wrote (DJ Mencap), Friday, 3 October 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

How is it that a guy willing to post such an extensive, passionate rant like this never came back. I was scrolling down anxiously awaiting the bite me bizkit vs. [nabisco] (and/or whoever) throw-down and got nuthin! NUTHIN!

RabiesAngentleman, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

whoa...crazy auto edit

RabiesAngentleman, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:50 (seventeen years ago)

I think I prefer the Bizkit to Tool, if I was forced to choose. LB are a lot less pompous.

Neil S, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

^^^the evils of popism

100 tons of hardrofl beyond zings (Just got offed), Friday, 3 October 2008 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

Yes but LB rock less.

RabiesAngentleman, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

I can overlook pompous in a heartbeat.

RabiesAngentleman, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

Tool bloke can't rap as well as Durst either.

Neil S, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

Neil S, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

Do the poll on I Rate Everything, seriously. Actually, no, do it on ILTMI or any of the genuinely unreg boards.

100 tons of hardrofl beyond zings (Just got offed), Friday, 3 October 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

Does he rap? I guess I don't listen to much Tool.

RabiesAngentleman, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

I'm crossing my fingers for a googler invasion

RabiesAngentleman, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

tony orlando and dawng (PappaWheelie V), Friday, 3 October 2008 15:09 (seventeen years ago)

And Jim Davis... Oh Jim Davis. Well, he used to have a purpose, back a few years ago when Garfield was cool they helped me, he vented his aggression and I vented mine. I needed it, then I grew out of Garfield. Good thing because he sold out. Jon vented everything and now he has nothing to write about. Now those kids that were my age have the new Garfield and are not getting anything from it but pressure to be a wigger and fit in with all these queers.

He was found the next morning and although Mr Madden initially denied any involvement in the death of his "bro", he was charged with Mr McPherson's murder.
