The producer aspect is so often overlooked, I think...two of my favorite Buckingham production jobs were "Gold" for John Stewart (late '70s vintage) and Matthew Sweet's cover of "Magnet And Steel" (mid '90s vintage), both tracks featuring nice freak-out solos by Buckingham. So so so underrated.

Erick H (Erick H), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

reminds me: a few years back i exchanged my copy of Liz Phair's Exile In Guyville for Buckingham's Out Of The Cradle (that a friend had)
still happy with the swop, me ...not that i think Cradle is exactly the best thing LB has done, but it ain't poorer than FMac's 80s albs
sure, LB a great producer and a very fine guitarist (or at least he has been)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Total Classic. He performed on Saturday Night Live way back when .. he did "Trouble" & "Bwana". He did the most amazing guitar solo on Trouble... I think his records sometimes suffer from overproduction (Out of the Cradle especially..) But he is an amazing guitarist, singer, writer.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
New album in October!

Lindsey Buckingham finally releases a new album, Under The Skin, on 10/3. He tells USA Today

[It's] kind of a reduction. There are basically no drums, very little bass. On a musical level, I've been trying to distill things. This is the best time in my life, and that's a great thing to be able to say when you're 56, and didn't become a father till you were 48.

He plans another “more rocking” album next year and (finally) a solo U.S. tour. “It's a turnaround, time-frame-wise, for someone who's been sort of the Terrence Malick of rock,” he admits.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 13 August 2006 02:47 (nineteen years ago)

It's pretty incredible that someone would have felt guilt about this four years ago.

Sundar (sundar), Sunday, 13 August 2006 03:02 (nineteen years ago)

So fucking nervy. An exploding little man. Ben Stiller's MR FURIOUS persona for real. Genius, classic.

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 13 August 2006 03:42 (nineteen years ago)

You are not alone. This is truly great news. I have heard rumours that he has scrapped several albums over the years. I remember reading an interview with R.E.M where the journalist followed Peter Buck around for a few days. One of Buck's 'errands' was going to a studio to give Lindsey Buckingham some feedback on his new recordings. The journalist made a point of commenting on how stressed Buckingham looked and how he was manically scribbling down Buck's comments on a notepad. Seemed a little bit sad...
Posted by: ani at August 11, 2006 12:23 PM

anyone have a copy of this interview?

you're killing me, larry! (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 13 August 2006 04:46 (nineteen years ago)

Classic--

and i guess quite the water polo player..my friend and i were perusing his mom's high school yearbook (i think a school in Palo Alto?) only to find Lindsey mid ball-toss in the pool...He signed something lame, like "Kristen--Government was classic. Big Love...LB" (not verbatim, but something trivial). And that, friends, is my Lindsey Buckingham story.

Mr Wrong O'Wrongson, I presume?

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 07:18 (nineteen years ago)

He's just super classic. And "Tusk" is one of the best albums ever.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

Let's not overlook Go Crazy.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

Classic.

Out of the Cradle is a great album and some of his guitar noodling is incredible.

Sean Robison (yaratnam), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

D'you mean "Go Insane"? I got that sealed for $5 once, that was a good day. Pretty gorgeous rec.

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 23:28 (nineteen years ago)

Classic for "Never Going Back Again" alone. Incredible guitar player.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 23:55 (nineteen years ago)

"Big Love" still sucks, though.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 23:55 (nineteen years ago)

Mr. Snrub did you ever hear the live version of "Big Love" from The Dance? It is the most amazing thing ever.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 17 August 2006 00:22 (nineteen years ago)

His reinvention of "Go Insane" is even more breathtaking.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 17 August 2006 00:34 (nineteen years ago)

Classic. Interesting credit I just learned about yesterday: apparently he plays guitar on the Josie Cotton version of "Jimmy Loves Maryann." (orig. spelling "Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne")

Ruud Haarvest (Ken L), Thursday, 17 August 2006 00:49 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
anyone listen to the new one yet?

jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 5 October 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

The new one is by far his most consistent solo release. Very stripped down - the bulk of the album is guitar and vocals. Great cover of the Stones' "I Am Waiting".

Love it.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Thursday, 5 October 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Thursday, 5 October 2006 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

I don't have the album yet, but I really like the clip of "Show You How" on his website. I'm hoping to catch his solo tour in Falls Church, VA on Monday night.

John Fredland (jfredland), Thursday, 5 October 2006 22:50 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

I just bought Out of the Cradle. Seems good so far (his guitar playing is, as always, amazingly clean and crisp (and he can be bluesy, too)). Crazy comparison, but Surrender the Rain sounds a little like a Richard Hawley song, to me (not a bad thing at all!).

Anyone else have this disc? Like it?

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 20 January 2008 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

beautiful record.
probably his best solo record.

Zeno, Sunday, 20 January 2008 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

Haven't heard it in years, but I agree it's his best, with consistently beautiful guitar. "Soul Drifter" and "Turn it On" (is that the right title?) are favorites.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 20 January 2008 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

I know they're solo discs, but now I'm wishing that Buckingham gave his solo songs more of a full-band feel. Down on Rodeo, for instance, from Under the Skin, has a great SoCal-drenched band feel (obv., the presence of Fleetwood Mac and John McVie helps), and it worked beautifully.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 20 January 2008 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

Buckingham is god.

jim, Sunday, 20 January 2008 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

UH

I guess that's more true than "Clapton is God," but still...

Classic (but not god).

Rock Hardy, Sunday, 20 January 2008 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

He's a brilliant guitarist. I'm pleased at the love he's getting on this thread, instead of just hailing him as a mere singing/songwriting/producing genius. My favourite Lindsey look is the besuited, droopy afro'ed one on the inside sleeve of the 1975 album. Someone post an image, please!

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 20 January 2008 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

he turns 60 this year

omar little, Sunday, 20 January 2008 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

60? Wow. He looks younger. See the photo on the cover of Under the Skin.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 20 January 2008 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

He is classic for "Tango In The Night" alone. Although that album is usually underrated when compared to their most popular mid 70s work.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 20 January 2008 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

He's classic for a lot of the Fleetwood Mac stuff, but his solo discs have a very different sound and feel (not worse, by any means, just v. different).

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 21 January 2008 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

I may be misreading, but it looks like Under The Skin is available from Amazon for 99 cents.

dlp9001, Monday, 21 January 2008 01:48 (eighteen years ago)

'Under the Skin' was a tremendously strong album. Man, such a shame that it barely received any attention at all.

Stormy Davis, Monday, 21 January 2008 02:42 (eighteen years ago)

I may be misreading, but it looks like Under The Skin is available from Amazon for 99 cents.

Sadly, I'm not surprised. It's amazing to me that such a talented -- and successful (with his band) -- artist has had such trouble finding an audience.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 21 January 2008 03:00 (eighteen years ago)

maybe thats because he became too old for the youngsters and too "arty" and minimalist for the mainstream listeners.
or u can blame it on bad marketing.

Zeno, Monday, 21 January 2008 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

I still spin "Go Insane" on Dj nights. Such a great single.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

Under the Skin is very nice, yes. I thought I'd never want to hear another Stones cover until "I Am Waiting" started to play.

kurt schwitterz, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 18:22 (four years ago)

LMAO, a lot of times you'll see a longtime musician like Dylan, McCartney or Prince discuss decades later how they amaze themselves when they look back at their work (i.e. "where did this come from?" or "how did I write this?") It's funny how this plays out with Buckingham stumbling on a demo he recorded 20 years ago and whoops, I guess I DIDN'T write that!

birdistheword, Thursday, 25 November 2021 15:47 (four years ago)

I have to imagine this sort of thing is a common occurrence amongst songwriters. I recall about 15 years ago I thought up a really nice, pretty arpeggiated melody over an elegant descending chord sequence - I was in the shower at the time but thought it was so good I threw on a towel, jumped out, and wrote down the chords and recorded myself singing the melody so I wouldn't forget it by the time I was dried off. Around the time I was working out the lyrics a few weeks later, I heard "my" song playing on the piped-in music at a McDonalds I occasionally stopped at on the way home, then realized the song I thought I'd written was something i merely heard at a previous fast-food stop when I wasn't paying much attention. To this day I don't know what song I unintentionally almost copped; this was pre-Shazam.

Lee626, Friday, 26 November 2021 12:37 (four years ago)

Greil Marcus really likes the new album too. He's always been a huge FM fan (of the Peter Green era, of Christine McVie's songs, and of the Buckingham/Nicks-era), but IIRC he's never cared much for their solo work. A search of his complete Real Life Rock Top 10 albums reveals no entries on anything Buckingham's done on his own.

kind of like the episode of the John Laroquette Show where he discovers a manuscript of his from 30 years ago and it's amazing and he's trying to recreate something new in that vein for publishing, but he can't find the inspiration, so he sends the manuscript to the publisher and it's an Ernest Hemingway novel that he had typed up for his Typing final years ago

Yeah, sorry, I thought of that immediately. But life goes on (for some)! At least the video provides some levity.

hungover beet poo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 11 June 2025 17:54 (eleven months ago)

I don't think I've heard solo Lindsey except for the Vacation theme song, which I deeply love for nostalgic reasons and the dog sounds crack me up.

But listening to that song in the reaction video, it's very Kate Bush! And there's not really a lot that sounds like her.

Cow_Art, Wednesday, 11 June 2025 21:46 (eleven months ago)

his albums are awesome, you should listen to them all.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 11 June 2025 22:06 (eleven months ago)

I was skeptical but they are indeed great. The deluxe edition of Anthology is a great place to start and for awhile I found copies for cheap - like $10. (Sadly he hasn't sold that many records for his solo work in a long while, so it wasn't a surprise.) Out of the Cradle is probably the best of them. The latest one is really good too, maybe my second favorite partly due to its consistency.

birdistheword, Wednesday, 11 June 2025 22:11 (eleven months ago)

Not a solo album, but the album he did with Christine McVie is up there with his best F Mac work.

Dan Worsley, Wednesday, 11 June 2025 22:52 (eleven months ago)

The other two (minus Stevie) are on that as well, because it was supposed to be a Mac album.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 11 June 2025 23:13 (eleven months ago)

It made so happy whenever he talked about Christine in the last five years of his life; he always respected her but he kept emphasizing what a pro she was, what a superb melodist and singer, etc.

This is some scary shit, the guy has a crazed stalker:

The woman is known to Buckingham, 76, from past incidents, law enforcement sources said. An arrest is expected soon, they added.

Authorities said they believe the woman found out when and where Buckingham had an appointment and showed up at the location.

Bucky posted a video of him playing "Rhiannon" with the teaser "coming soon..."

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 April 2026 20:06 (one month ago)

I'd be very surprised if he did a tour with Stevie either as FM or Buckingham/Nicks, but who knows at this point.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Monday, 13 April 2026 20:33 (one month ago)

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Monday, 13 April 2026 20:35 (one month ago)

He does, but in this case he picked a pretty conspicuous Stevie song, and the "coming soon ..." seems pretty unnecessary, given we know he posts guitar videos. Like, why play a bit of the song as a prelude to ... playing the song?

Anyway, my first reaction was tour with Stevie. Then I bet they'll tour again as a band, or play the Sphere, or some shit that makes a lot of money.

The B/N reissue was a bit of a disappointment given that there were, uh, rumours for years that it was going to get a stacked edition with demos and extra stuff.

Lithium Just Madison (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 14 April 2026 21:21 (one month ago)

yeah, especially given that theres a couple deluxe editions of all the FM albums they're on, box sets, full alternate albums, box sets of full alternate albums....

encino morricone (majorairbro), Tuesday, 14 April 2026 21:49 (one month ago)

Yeah, it was so easy to get decent bootlegs - like good rips from good, clean vinyl copies - I don't think it would've been much of an event without some unheard bonus material. As-is, it was just "oh, a legit, affordable version from the original masters, how nice," but that's it.

birdistheword, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 02:21 (one month ago)

I know it was brought up in interviews over the years, but weren't they usually open to releasing it, it was just more prosaic issues like "where are the masters"? I thought Nicks said that at one point, she and Buckingham were thinking of putting it out, but it physically wasn't possible for some reason.

birdistheword, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 02:23 (one month ago)

This was from an interview promoting the new release, but it sounded like it was a disorganized mess and they just needed to get their act together to make it happen:

"It's like sharing ownership of an old car," Nicks, now 77, once said of the tangled rights to the album, which were split between herself, Buckingham, and producer Keith Olsen. "The stars never seemed to exactly align."

For Buckingham, 76 next month, the reasons for its disappearance were less clear. "One of Stevie's managers has the masters in her house," he said in an interview years later. Why? "Well, because somebody's got to have them somewhere. The politics of Fleetwood Mac are strange."

He added: "Better hurry up! That's all I can say."
