"Natalie Portman's Shaved Head" is one of the worst band names ever. Hoobastank is up there too though.

phantompenguin, Monday, 20 April 2009 03:06 (seventeen years ago)

any band name with 'stank', 'scent', 'smell' or the like will put me off immediately. same for any songs with those words in the title

pale spector (electricsound), Monday, 20 April 2009 03:07 (seventeen years ago)

Animal Collective made me think of hippie jam bands where the musicians have power animals.

well that is pretty accurate

Is there a band called o_O ?

Back in the days of IDM there was an unsigned artist on a record label I sort of ran, who called himself Cell but also ran under a range of pseudonyms including Cel, Sell, Sel etc. but I also remember him using o_O on some of his tracks, which is where I first saw that flavour smiley. His stuff was really good and I remember Aphex Twin being interested in signing him to Rephlex but Cell didn't believe it was really RDJ and told him to fuck off.

the next grozart, Monday, 20 April 2009 11:59 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, Animal Collective puts me off. As does A.R.E. Weapons -- who are laughable anyway, so it's a lose-lose situation, really.

a friend reminded me of another one:

Brightblack Morning Light - the reason why I've pointedly written off/ignored Black Moth Superrainbow - because their name sounds like Brightblack Morning Light.

ppl don't understand that "pure at heart" means something different than "pure of heart"?

Pure at heart = 'underneath all the evil, he's actually a nice bloke'

Pure of heart = 'doesn't drink, smoke, swear, and spends all his spare time reading the bible'

or something like that.

Mark G, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 08:56 (seventeen years ago)

for a long time i did not give radiohead a chance. partly due to their ridiculous name, partly due to the hype, partly due to thom yorke's voice. from amnesiac on i listened to their music.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 09:13 (seventeen years ago)

with coldplay though everything is in harmony. a stupid name, a shitty voice, empty lyrics which seem to be written by a robot. plus boring music which isn't worth commenting on.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

sorry for reposting the same shit again.

What's ridiculous about the name Radiohead? Or Coldplay for that matter.

Tits Bramble (Matt DC), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 10:02 (seventeen years ago)

Now Spoon, that's a stupid name for a band.

Tits Bramble (Matt DC), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 10:04 (seventeen years ago)

Not for a shit band.

If You Lived Here You'd Be SB'd By Now (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 10:06 (seventeen years ago)

There have been occasions where bands have gone "ah, we're a bit shit, let's give ourselves a stupid name" and then for some reason get sudden success.

Farmer's Boys, e.g.

Mark G, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 10:12 (seventeen years ago)

What's ridiculous about the name Radiohead? Or Coldplay for that matter.

just putting two seemingly unrelated words together doesn't make a good band name. radiohead was first used by the talking heads, i know but as a band name i find it bulky and clumsy. coldplay never made any sense to me as a name. where is the creative effort in that name? i simply refuse to listen to a band with such a canned name. funny that their name was first pectoralz (???) and then starfish. a further proof that giving themselves a decent name doesn't seem to be their core competence.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 11:58 (seventeen years ago)

Also, I cannot bring myself to listen to something called CAGE THE ELEPHANT

Don't worry. From what I've heard you're not missing anything.

there's no way a mind which thinks that's an acceptable band name could ever be anything other than 100% contemptible

lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 12:09 (seventeen years ago)

casiotone for the painfully alone at least is ridiculous AND funny.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 12:21 (seventeen years ago)

I swear I read someplace that said cold play is a "random sequencing" of any particular thing. Like...if radio DJ played an arbitrary shuffle of songs, "a cold play of Lilly Allen, AC/DC, etc etc..."

Can't recommend quoting me on that.

╓abies, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 12:25 (seventeen years ago)

Pissed Jeans is pretty bad, but yeah, AIDS Wolf is not only the worst of all the Wolf names, but also the worst band name ever.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 12:31 (seventeen years ago)

Um. Yeah if taking those names at face value is your stance then I guess so.

╓abies, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 12:41 (seventeen years ago)

Coldplay are a hangover from the 90s school of Brit indie band naming ie - "make sure your band has a name with as few connotations as possible". See also Blur.

I think I prefer this to new-skool Google-friendly band names.

Tits Bramble (Matt DC), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

but coldplay is about the most google-friendly name imaginable. or do you think you will find one page with coldplay on it where it doesn't stand for the band?

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 13:12 (seventeen years ago)

I always liked the supposed origins of the name AIDS Wolf (IIRC an urban myth about rabid wolves wandering into big cities and transmitting AIDS) but got the impression with the band, especially after limited interaction with them, that they were more the type who'd be mouthing "that's right, we went there" after telling you their name

Met this dude at a party a few months ago. Haven't heard the music, but he seemed like a nice guy.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

cruiserweight. as it turns out they're a pretty dope little poppy punk band.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

Um. Yeah if taking those names at face value is your stance then I guess so.

Understanding the backstory to AIDS Wolf's name makes it only marginally more tolerable. My reaction to these is slightly mysterious I suppose, as I don't have any problem with Dead Kennedies, which is pretty offensive. I think DJ Mencap has nailed it though.
