whats that from, sebastien?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

part of it is from a couple of people; Debord, Lautréamont ...& me on the "copier/coller" thread I made on the net art board. In the present context, I mean what daft punk are guilty of, exactly? They haven't followed the rules of proper "intertextuality" by failing to id their reference on that album that is yet to be released or what (I go with "or what" because progress= friend of daft punk logic)

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

can someone type out the lyrics to technologie? thanks.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, not a big deal to its detriment, maybe. (xp)

What's this place, Biblevania? (natepatrin), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 04:51 (twenty-one years ago)

well, fwiw i don't think they're 'guilty' of anything, especially not for leaning on samples, and i'm certainly not interested in finger-pointing, but i do think it's relevant to the extent that they have a reputation (whether rightful or not) for being gymnasts in the studio and that reputation informs people's expectations of their work (see: this thread). so if knowledge of their source material (and the extent to which they've copped it) is a big deal, then maybe it's because i think it could lead to a critical re-evaluation of the whole daft punk as tapehead musos thing. i mean i understand that this knowledge doesn't change the end result one lick but i am interested in process, if for no other reason than because it helps with forecasting..

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Point made, though when I first heard the singles from Homework I didn't hear so much muso gymnastics as I did the phenomenal ability to pick the best 5-to-10-second loop to ride and subtly tweak for 7 minutes.

(More thoughts on the context of the Breakwater track here.)

but he is right about "Technologic" and to the haters who call it "self-parody," I don't see it.

I think I am the only "hater", but surely you can see how redundant it is compared with "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger", especially in the lyric department.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i cant help but listen to "technologic" without thinking it was purposely made to soundtrack tomorrow's electronics and it commercials

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

so, i still stand by a lot of my criticisms upthread... but listens 5 and 6 make a lot more sense than listens 1 and 2 did. i'll play this out a lot more than i will at home though.

and mark p. completely otm about how this song is made for apple's 'rip mix burn' campaign.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

and not to rub it in or anything but i feel really sorry for the people receiving notification emails from this thread...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 05:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, imagine how long this thread will be by the time the album is released.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i am interested in process, if for no other reason than because it helps with forecasting..

I have no problem w/ this.

deej., Tuesday, 25 January 2005 05:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ROCK ROCK ROBOT ROCK....DON'T STOP

tylero (tylero), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

can someone type out the lyrics to technologie? thanks.

Buy it, use it, break it, fix it,
trash it, change it, melt - upgrade it,
charge it, pawn it, zoom it, press it,
snap it, work it, quick - erase it,
write it, get it, paste it, save it,
load it, check it, quick - rewrite it,
plug it, play it, burn it, rip it,
drag and drop it, zip - unzip it,
lock it, fill it, curl it, find it,
view it, curl it, jam - unlock it,
surf it, scroll it, pose it, click it,
cross it, crack it, twitch - update it,
name it, read it, tune it, print it,
scan it, send it, fax - rename it,
touch it, bring it, obey it, watch it,
turn it, leave it, stop - format it.

Technologic, technologic, technologic, technologic.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Technologic is great, lighten up people. And the Brainwasher *totally* hits it, dancefloor wise, more than Robot Rock anyway.

I think now that the excitement of "Wow! I'm listening to the new Daft Punk album!" has worn off, I basically agree with Stevem. This isn't as good an album as Discovery but the best tracks are very good indeed. Its all about Human After All, The Brainwasher, Technologic and Emotion. I don't like Steam Machine at all.

Human After All is basically a joke on Kraftwerk's The Robots, isn't it?

I fear my first listen to Kish Kash has permanently coloured my reaction to every album I've heard since. I've never recaptured that "OMG THIS IS SO, SO FUCKING GOOD!" feeling ever since.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never recaptured that "OMG THIS IS SO, SO FUCKING GOOD!" feeling ever since.

Not even with Rex The Dog's "Frequency," Matt?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

(albeit that was a single, not an album)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I have just listened to the first three tracks on the way to work.

Initial impressions:

'Human After All' - hmmm... nothing surprising here. Scene-setting kind of track #1, rather than a mind-blower?

'The Prime Time Of Your Life' - this is more like it. I think the "prime time of your life" line is exactly what I want to hear right now. I am officially shaking off post-weekend blues. Doesn't open out into the track I expected, but I think that's OK.

'Robot Rock' - heard this before and was a bit underwhelmed. Apparently also heard it at the End on Saturday, but I have sketchy memories of much of that evening. Now it sounds ferocious. I love life.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It's OK... just not that inspired to me. I mean, its not that a group has to do new shit on every album but I have dozens of 12-inches from the mid 90's that sound like any of these songs. They basically have one filter setting they've used for their entire careers...

DougD, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I gather you live pretty close to work, Alba.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Err yeah - 15 mins walk. I did actually catch the first minute or so of the next track but felt it unfair to comment.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba do you remember hearing '...Primetime...' at The End? it was a great moment

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously people you need to hear these tracks in a club LOUD with people everywhere, then come back here

i'd like to take the good tracks on HAA and the good tracks on Discovery and have The Greatest Album Of All Time

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

They sound so completely different though! This works so much better this way.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba do you remember hearing '...Primetime...' at The End? it was a great moment

I would like to do Saturday again, differently.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

They sound so completely different though! This works so much better this way.

If you think about the themes of Discovery, and the videos, many of the tracks on HAA would fit into that reasonably well e.g. 'The Brainwasher' being the bit where they have their memories erased, 'Human After All' would become 'Alien After All' haha. But yes I5555 has such romance and fantasy whereas HAA is an overly darker work.

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

'Emotion' is just begging to sound track the most glamourous 'Emulsion' advert ever.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I am the only "hater", but surely you can see how redundant it is compared with "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger", especially in the lyric department.

"Technologic" pisses all over "HBFS" (which itself is an inferior reworking of "Around The World" anyway).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

If you think HBFS is like Around The World you're a complete spazzer.

Sorry, just joining in the general antsy vibe.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"Technologic" pisses all over "HBFS" (which itself is an inferior reworking of "Around The World" anyway).

Ah well, I think exactly the opposite, Dan. But we Boston folk must stick together! Otherwise we'll never get rid of the stench of Aerosmith.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"HBFS" has a great chorus...but I remember nothing else about it, generally.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

that's YOUR error, carbon-based unit

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

RobotM has his data straight.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I like this part:

04. Steam Machine - hotttttttttxxxxxxxxxxx
05. Make Love - afterglowmeltdown

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

you forgot

06. PISTONPUMPINGASLIIDILSALJFLEIFJE!!!!!!

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

And, very important:

I AM THE BRAINWASHAAAAA!!!

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

has anyone got a fresh link to this?

I was in Barcelona all weekend and although Mark P was kind enough to mail me a link I couldn't download anything obviously.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

ronan, check the dido thread.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I was going to download this last night, but when I got home I had to break up a fight between my dog and my cat and completely forgot about it! With any luck this situation will be rectified tonight.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Were they posting to the Reynolds thread, too?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

some of it harks back to the first album, but i love the new sounds too. i have loved these guys forever and they have not dispointed me yet. robot rock is so fucking catchy!

Brad Seethe, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Were they posting to the Reynolds thread, too?

The vision of her cat and dog being named "Ronan" and "Blount" terrifies my soul.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The prospect of ilx posters as pets is a frightening one. I don't suppose spaying and neutering would help in most cases.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

And yet depending on what name you give the pet it could provide a certain grim satisfaction.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

groups that are better at doing what daft punk does than daft punk:

1. ural 13 diktators
2. kitbuilders
3. bangkok impact

i'm sure vahid and stirmonster and finney and ronan and others can add more. this is not a dis, just a shout out for all the poor alter egos of this world who don't get 680-post threads about them!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Why don't you play the game?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think anyone is better at doing what Daft Punk do than Daft Punk! The reason I don't feel the same way about them as I would the Chemical Brothers etc is that they are a pop act as much as a dance one. More than really.

I am only listening to the new record for the first time now, btw.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Major major xpost..

Mind you, it took me several years to appreciate Lil' Louis's "French Kiss" when it first came out in 1989. Some of the tracks here might fall under that category.

..ok, sorry. carry on...

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I took this to the gym last night. When "Robot Rock" came on, I wanted to go run a four-minute mile, bench press 500lbs, do ten sets of fifty pull-ups, climb mt. everest...

Today, however, cranking it up at work, I get the feeling these songs are all riff. The kind of stuff that should be used take to the stage in concert to hype up the crowd. They don't go anywhere after the initial adrenaline rush.

Maybe context is all and I need to experience it in a crowd.

john'n'chicago, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"Steam Machine" is amazing!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)
