when will this place that just sold for millions of dollars learn how to run a company!

How much you can get someone to pay for something = always a mark of its quality.

That dad rock cartoon is the single most smug and terrible thing they've ever done. It has nothing redeeming about it

I keep thinking the redesign is optimized for some specific platform or medium that I just don't use. Like, Oculus Rift or something.

i don't know how it works at pitchfork but if you see a video on a website that you don't like it's safe to assume that it was made by an entirely separate staff of people from the one that makes the website you enjoy reading

Not for perusing websites, no. But I do use it to text, email and make phone calls!

is it really pronounced "Bone Eee-vere"? i just watched that dad rock video and that's how he says it. i always pronounced it "Bonn Eye-ver".
― scott seward, Thursday, 16 June 2016 16:44 (eight years ago) link
that dad rock video isn't that bad. pointless and not really worth watching but pretty accurate.
― scott seward, Thursday, 16 June 2016 16:46 (eight years ago) link
yeah i didn't find it terrible. kinda funny.

i looked at something yesterday on there and it was all about someone who may or may not have ripped some guy's song off for an apple ad and then it turned out that the guy who may have been ripped off had done apple ads and they had these pictures of apple billboards and videos of apple commercials and and all of a sudden i went heeeeeeeeyyyyyyy wait a minute did apple pay for this? it was a pretty non-news story that said the word Apple 5 million times.

idk if it is the redesign, quite possibly it is, but it seems like there has been a dramatic drop-off in quality across the site, it seems worthless to me now and i used to visit it everyday

same - i feel like they don't actually care if you read the reviews now and it feels like a bother to try

yeah i remember i never heard anyone pronounce Bon Iver until he was on The Grammys and everyone on twitter was like "who's Bonnie Bear?"

yeah i used to check it every day, even after i stopped writing for the site, but now it just feels like navigating a maze of shit i don't really care about to get to anything i might care about.
(also kind of weirded out to be posting in this thread 14 fucking years after i started it.)

this is a very uncharitable interpretation of a story (with actual reporting! it's sad that this is not common) that doesn't reflect well on apple. it mentions Shamir just as often -- did Shamir pay for the story too? your post mentions apple a lot -- did apple pay for that too?

lol, i know that plenty of people know about archive.org, the article was just a "hey check out some of this neat stuff" kind of thing. i always assume everyone has already heard about what i'm writing about, but it usually turns out that a lot of people don't! there are a lot of people out there.
― tylerw, Monday, 20 June 2016 17:15 (eight years ago) link
"usually turns out that a lot of people haven't" is what i meant. not only is pitchfork dumb, i am dumb too!
― tylerw, Monday, 20 June 2016 17:16 (eight years ago) link
True. Actually sorta surprised that more people don't know about the archive or how much stuff is on there. I saw the headline and i thought "Oh! new Elliott Smith show discovered..." and it was something I'd already heard. Didn't mean to be salty.
― flappy bird, Monday, 20 June 2016 17:21 (eight years ago) link
ha, no problem, i would probably be salty if i hadn't written it, heh heh.

It will only be a matter of time till Pitchfork discovers that its old pre-2000 reviews that it took down can be found on archive.org too.

to their credit it's a negative review (5.0) but LOL at this music existing/getting press at all
South London musician Benjy Keating is signed to the acclaimed independent dancehall label Mixpak, where he makes a strange and subdued DIY bedroom-pop version of dancehall.
https://img.discogs.com/QdK3s8Fpvpu9tYSNgUVOh8L-j5Q=/470x305/smart/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/A-23674-1357619324-3505.jpeg.jpg
Benjy Keating started making music in a South London bedroom, spurred on by his roommate Dominik Dvorak (aka PC Music affiliated producer Felicita). At first he was making what he admitted to be “Burial rip-offs” but then, after hearing dancehall beats blare out of car windows, he drifted into a new style. The first taste of this came with a song called “Catch,” made in conjunction with SOPHIE. The song boasted a cool minimalism grafted onto the whisper of polyrhythmic Caribbean sounds. On top of it was Keating’s voice: British, introverted, mumbly, a painfully shy-sounding white kid singing in a sort of patois.

I went looking for that "10 concerts from archive.org" on pitchfork (that i'd previously linked to from this thread) and i have literally no idea where it might be or what to search for to find it. i view this as a flaw of the new design.

You have to find the "10 concerts from archive.org" section. First, make sure to use a phone! Second, scroll down for five minutes.
