I'll say that so far this is a very cool list. And it might be the first list I've ever voted for where the majority of my top ten doesn't even make the list, I'm actually sort of excited about that. My tastes are usually so canonical.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

cuz Britain's been putting out shit in the 00s.

btw, Gear, you rock for doing this. You had a lot more shit to tally than I did for the OMG poll so I know this was a LOT of work. Good job!

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Portishead's self-titled album is fucking great.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"All Mine" is a great song but nowhere near as great as "Sour Times," I think.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Than the 00-04 one, jay? I've no idea. I hadn't noticed that it did. Maybe all the American stuff is still to come (except 'Common People', obv). Radiohead are honorary Americans.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i also think that all mine is the superior portishead track, but even so, it only ranked 24 on my list.

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

o come on miccio if you were at a party and this was the playlist so far you know that party would be sucking. titties don't pop out to no belle and sebastian. whereas at a freaknasty party...

jaymc - cuz the brits all pretty much agree on what was british and good, yanks have amerindie vs. hip-hop vs. anglophile (those traitors!) divides.

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Bill, Got Your Money is produced by the Neptunes! It's danceable! It has a MUCH better chance than the other Wu cuts.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

11 of my projected top 29 are American.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Jaymc - cuz the brits all pretty much agree on what was british and good,

Why I oughta put you over my knee.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Radiohead are honorary Americans.

fuck you, take that back.

o come on miccio if you were at a party and this was the playlist so far you know that party would be sucking

yeah but ladies like the B&S at the crib. and it wasn't the WYLDEST JAMZ of the 90s.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even know if I've heard "Got Your Money" all the way through. It has like 1/10 the reputation of "C.R.E.A.M."

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that "Music Sounds Better With You" is like a 99/100 lock. I can't think of a more ILM friendly song than that one.
Yep, and I'm anticipating the Daft Punk luv to sweep "Da Funk" into the top 30 along with it.

I'm holding out hope for "Laid" ... it's an extremely well-known song, even if it does scream "STUDENT PUB NIGHT" for most of us I think it's still a vote-getter.

(I nominated it, too :) )

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

ladies what love b&s give lousy head. whereas at a freaknasty party...

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

OL' DIRTY BASTARD (FEATURING KELIS) - "Got Your Money" (447 points, 27 votes, 1 first place vote)

"Got Your Money is just about the best song ever, which is saying quite a lot - do you know how many songs there have been? I'll tell you, a lot."
-- Ally

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

belle & sebastian really ARE boring

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The titties have popped, Blount.

and I think people are ignoring how diverse this list has been. Poppin' a hernia everytime an indie track comes along and looking the other way when Biggie flies by.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"All Mine" is a great song but nowhere near as great as "Sour Times", I think.

I agree, but to me "Sour Times" should have been #1 or #2 and "All Mine" should have at least made the top 100.

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

one of the last times I DJed at "indie night," "Got Yo Money" got the most enthusiastic reaction. Except from the guy who runs it (damn it).

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't believe you're siding with scarfpop over crunk.

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahaha I suck.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Sometimes you've just got to say fuck your freaknasty parties.

Why do people insist on pretending they only have one criterion for what makes good music, or even a good party?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Scarfpop haha

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

What do you think the chances of there being two more Ol' Dirty Bastard tracks to come are?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

two? none

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

(mega xpost) Actually, to answer my own question about this poll being more British: it's probably not, it just seems that way to us. These days, everyone's more or less acquainted with both British and American acts equally, because a) more ways to hear about and access music in the 21st century, and b) most of us are probably less insular in terms of what we seek out than we were 10 years ago.

(For a lot of us, the 1990s represented our teenage years. To be a British teenager in the 1990s, I gather, meant having an opinion about Pulp. To be an American teenager in the 1990s meant it just never came up, and while we may have later sought out 90s British acts, we have nothing to be nostalgic for.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"Got yo money" in top 30 thrilla!
YESSSS!

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread is starting to stink of testosterone and B.O. I'm off to look for my scarf.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm holding out hope for "Laid" ... it's an extremely well-known song, even if it does scream "STUDENT PUB NIGHT" for most of us I think it's still a vote-getter.

Yeah I guess it's possible but I think James' reputation hasn't exactly held up. No one talks about them anymore except in a nostalgic or "what were we thinking?" context. Great song, though--should've been top 100, though I'd say top 30 is a bit strong.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

blount see my singles list. I'm not picking scarfpop over crunk. I'm just not gonna get my panties in a knot that more people on ILX prefer scarfage. They're picking GOOD scarfpop, so fine. It's poor form to go to an indie party and complain about it being an indie party.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Bear in mind also, that not everyone here was a teenager in the 1990s at all.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

and I think people are ignoring how diverse this list has been
As was noted in the 00's poll, in terms of who makes the most noise on these threads,

people who get upset that there is ANY indie rock in the chart >>>>>>>> people who voted for indie rock

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

two? none

Damn - I nominated Brooklyn Zoo and Shimmy Shimmy Ya. Guess they're not showing up.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

#28

UNDERWORLD - "Born Slippy NUXX" (462 points, 28 votes)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000003RJJ.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

"I think it was really quite unconventional and not quite traditional given its style and approach. using the Underworld formula but transporting it into the mainstream i thought was bizarre. it was a success but i remember being quite amazed when 'born slippy' went in at number 2, despite the Trainspotting connection - i think Underworld were really out on their own with their tracks then because no-one else was using lyrics like that with hard techno-based dance music and drawing parallels and joining the dots in observing, describing and defining life experiences previously only talked about in rock/punk/indie/jazz/rap/whatever but now contextualised within modern music designed to dance to and so technology-reliant"

LAGER LAGER LAGER LAGER

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

As was noted in the 00's poll, in terms of who makes the most noise on these threads,

So true. "WTF IF RADIOHEAD OR WILCO MAKE THIS LIST IM GOING TO KILL MYSELF"

"Got Your Money" making it and "Born Slippy (Nuxx)" being #28 = all bets are off for the rest of the list.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, "Born Slippy" placing this low is arguably the biggest surprise thus far.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

dudes like lists! ask nick hornby

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone been dead on in their placement of a track?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

28? I was sure this was gonna be top 10. Not that I voted for it (I think).

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

What is "(Nuxx)"? Is that a different version of the song than the one we all know and love, or was I just not aware of this subtitle?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i just realized blount is pissed because he can't find the rockcrit board where they give good head. That dilemma will never be resolved, dude.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone been dead on in their placement of a track?

27 Ol' Dirty Bastard - Got Your Money (actual: 29)

that's as close as i've come

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Nuxx is the version that we all know and love (from "Trainspotting").

The original version on the single is 100 X better, of course.

(xpost)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

bah anthony! first kerry loses to bush, now freaknasty loses to belle and sebastian! my panties will remain twisted as long as puritan funhatas abound!

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I had Born slippy at 23, which is my closest.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

TRICKY - "Black Steel" (463 points, 22 votes, 1 first place vote)

http://www.moon-palace.de/pics/tricky/bsposter1a.jpg

comments?

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i always play the original version
love the varying breakbeats at the beginning and how it builds up into such a pounding acid rez track

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)
