It needs less John Squire and the chorus gets a bit annoying after the 10th time but it is an improvement over All For One.

It's so Love Spreads we were sitting here singing the lyrics to Love Spreads over the top of it.
It's better than the last one.
― ailsa, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:13 (seven years ago) link
It is like Love Spreads but even more like Breaking Into Heaven.

much better, yeah. all for one wore off after a few days for me

feelin this one
― Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:18 (seven years ago) link
It's nothing like 'Love Spreads', IMO, more like a less excessive 'Breaking Into Heaven'
Anyway, after being sorely disappointed with 'All For One', I liked this one - probably because it sounds like The Stone Roses and doesn't sound like a Seahorses cast-off.

makes me realize how much I miss good guitarists
― Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:20 (seven years ago) link
I saw people saying how they were relieved how they haven't repeated the formula of the first album but how do they feel about them repeating the formula of The Second Coming as that's what they've done here.
― Kitchen Person, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:20 (seven years ago) link
breaking into heaven is a good call. I loved the second coming so im all for that kinda sound mixed with fools gold.
― Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:21 (seven years ago) link
love the guitar sound on this song too (the best thing about all for one) but the rhythm section im feeling a LOT more on this one.
Unsurprisingly i love it when the roses do funky
― Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:22 (seven years ago) link
I love the Second Coming
― Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:22 (seven years ago) link
It sounds like a halfway house between the post-S/T groove stuff and Second Coming's Zeppelinisms. There's much less guitar wankery here.
― the hair - it's lost its energy (Turrican), Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:23 (seven years ago) link
yeah this feels more restrained than Breaking Into Heaven for ex., but there's a lot of little details in the guitars

listening now and picturing loads of bucket hats on their way to the bar/bogs
― PaulTMA, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:25 (seven years ago) link
Brown's voice sounds better on this track than on any track of Second Coming, too!
― the hair - it's lost its energy (Turrican), Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:26 (seven years ago) link
(x-post to Shakey)
will need a few listens to judge but im not sure how it works as an actual single might be more of a good album track?
― Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:29 (seven years ago) link
Technology has come on leaps and bounds since whenever that was.
― Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:32 (seven years ago) link
It has a kind of "back half of side 2" vibe to it, yeah, but this has at least got me feeling optimistic for the album.
― the hair - it's lost its energy (Turrican), Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:34 (seven years ago) link
xpost Yeah, it's interesting that I've seen so many people proclaim them as the return of real music to save us from all this manufactured pop rubbish (not on here obviously), but his voice will have been auto-tuned as much as any pop band, if not more.
― Kitchen Person, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:35 (seven years ago) link
I'm hoping for more of the groove/funk oriented stuff on the LP. I'm guessing Shakey and Cosmic Slop are too.
― the hair - it's lost its energy (Turrican), Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:42 (seven years ago) link
it's a thing they're good at, but I like all their sides tbh. for ex. my favorite thing on Second Coming is probably "Your Star Will Shine"
― Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:46 (seven years ago) link
the only songs i dont care for on the second coming are the 2 shitty ballads in the middle of it
― Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:51 (seven years ago) link
i wonder if there will be a 3rd single before the album that is more like the debut album? that would ensure great sales i reckon. Remember a lot the 1st album fans only liked ten storey love song as it was 60s pop not funk or led zep/hendrix/funkadelic rock
― Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:53 (seven years ago) link
for all the love fools gold gets im pretty damn sure an album like that instead of what the second coming was wouldve still went down like a lead balloon with some of the 1st stone roses album lovers I know.
― Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:56 (seven years ago) link
Wish it were longer, but 7 minutes is awesome. I'll take it. What a pleasure. They have their money, they don't need to do this for anything but the pleasure of doing it, which is a great place to be... For me it's right there between Breaking Into Heaven and Ian's second album, which gestured at this sort of approach but of course he didn't have musicians of this caliber/togetherness/history. Psychedelic groove cool preacher mode. I understand that maybe it doesn't mean anything to anyone but the already converted, and that's totally understandable there is a sweet redemption around this song (moreso than the first comeback single, which I liked) because it somehow really does pick up a baton that was dropped by this same relay team 25 years ago. Crazy.

Well that's a bit better.
― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 10 June 2016 06:09 (seven years ago) link
The faintly ridiculous nature of a midnight release on a Thursday means that my first listen to it was whilst sitting on the toilet at 7am, through my phone's speaker. Nora had a little dance to it on the bath mat.
― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 10 June 2016 06:48 (seven years ago) link
I'm sort-of of the opinion that I might leave this until the album comes out.
Put it this way: Was "All for one" unavoidable? I heard it once, and felt it was some sort of intro rather than a stand-alone album track, let alone a single.
― Mark G, Friday, 10 June 2016 09:30 (seven years ago) link
The new one feels like they wrote an ingredients list of what makes the Stone Roses good and then sellotaped all the different bits together. 'Funky' drumbeat. Wah-wah guitar licks. Backwards bit. Lyrics with vague biblical allusions. Crawling deep bassline. Ian Brown whispering a bit.
Not keen on the mix, which is a bit leaden. It sounds a bit like the Second Coming b-sides, rather than like the stuff after the debut album.
― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 10 June 2016 09:48 (seven years ago) link
it's not too bad (but not particularly interesting either) and quite similar to "breaking into heaven" indeed.the best thing about it might be that it sounds good.as someone said upthread, the chorus gets a bit irritating after a while, though... and the song is much too long !
― AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 10 June 2016 10:39 (seven years ago) link
no stone roses song is too long

Not bad, definitely has a Second Coming sort of feel to it. Probably would have worked better as the lead single than "All for One." I am still hoping for a new one that sounds more like classic Roses though.
― Poliopolice, Friday, 10 June 2016 15:55 (seven years ago) link
I doubt that will happen as the main songwriting force of the band has clearly lost it a loooong time ago (and I like some tracks on Second Coming... even the zep extravaganza !).At this point, it's already a success to release something that's not totally crap.thinking about the oasis/roses link : I'm not sure but I don't think oasis have ever been tempted by the funk/groove influence of the stone roses.
― AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 10 June 2016 16:05 (seven years ago) link
This is about a billion times better than "All for One"
― STOP KILLING ANIMALS, THEY'RE MINT (DJP), Friday, 10 June 2016 16:06 (seven years ago) link
This song is really bad. The chorus is unbearable.
― afriendlypioneer, Friday, 10 June 2016 16:38 (seven years ago) link
and the thing is, somehow, they've managed to repeat it a lot more than in a usual songwriting structure.it's like 122 chorus and 3 verses.
― AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 10 June 2016 17:06 (seven years ago) link
maybe what you're calling the verse is the chorus.

― jaywbabcock, Saturday, 11 June 2016 14:55 (seven years ago) link
This may grow on me, but for now it seems an improvement on "All for One" only in being merely dull rather than embarrassing.
― Freedom, Monday, 13 June 2016 08:30 (seven years ago) link
Yeah, that's about all I'd say for it. I loved them 20 years ago, but now I'm just not interested on what they're likely to do based on these two songs. I'll probably buy the album that emerges out of some sense of misplaced loyalty, but I can't imagine enjoying it massively.

The last one sounded like the Seahorses, this one sounds like Ian Brown's solo stuff. They both sound like pretty much the most predictable things they could have recorded.
― Matt DC, Monday, 13 June 2016 15:26 (seven years ago) link
I am confused about why they would put a black bar over someone's eyes and then also post their last name and location.
