do you know what a rhythm section is

Trump is dong (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:09 (ten years ago)

yeah, but i assumed you were just talking about how Reni's drumming is allegedly subpar now. I haven't heard anyone rip on Mani's bass playing specifically. Do you have a specific complaint about his bassery?

Poliopolice, Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:14 (ten years ago)

Mani's great on those Primal Scream records

He's not a miracle worker though.

i ready to believe there is still a chance ..

(just .. )

mark e, Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:17 (ten years ago)

true.

I don't really understand the impulse to say people shouldn't make music anymore because they made some good music 20 years ago and shouldn't "tarnish their legacy" or whatever. musicians gotta play music, it's a thing they do.

xp

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:18 (ten years ago)

Good that they got someone who is in no way a Stone Roses fan to review the gig.

Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:19 (ten years ago)

Browns vocals are too-often criticised by those who don’t get the reality of Madchester revivalism

dear lord

STOP KILLING ANIMALS, THEY'RE MINT (DJP), Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:27 (ten years ago)

I wouldn't write a review that breathlessly orgasmic about sex, let alone a concert

STOP KILLING ANIMALS, THEY'RE MINT (DJP), Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:27 (ten years ago)

@djp : harsh.
the reviewer was clearly overcome with the experience.
i totally understand that emotional excess re a gig.
in fact i would love to feel that rush again.

feel bad for posting the link now.

mark e, Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:30 (ten years ago)

Oh no, I enjoyed reading it!

Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:36 (ten years ago)

I... did not.

STOP KILLING ANIMALS, THEY'RE MINT (DJP), Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:46 (ten years ago)

i read that in Tommy Wiseau's voice.

Poliopolice, Thursday, 9 June 2016 21:21 (ten years ago)

...and it's out!

the hair - it's lost its energy (Turrican), Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:04 (ten years ago)

It's very Love Spreads.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:08 (ten years ago)

Right, let's give this rubbish a listen...

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:09 (ten years ago)

not available over here yet :(

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:12 (ten years ago)

It needs less John Squire and the chorus gets a bit annoying after the 10th time but it is an improvement over All For One.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:12 (ten years ago)

It's so Love Spreads we were sitting here singing the lyrics to Love Spreads over the top of it.

It's better than the last one.

ailsa, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:13 (ten years ago)

It is like Love Spreads but even more like Breaking Into Heaven.

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:13 (ten years ago)

ah here it is

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:14 (ten years ago)

much better, yeah. all for one wore off after a few days for me

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:17 (ten years ago)

feelin this one

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:18 (ten years ago)

It's nothing like 'Love Spreads', IMO, more like a less excessive 'Breaking Into Heaven'

Anyway, after being sorely disappointed with 'All For One', I liked this one - probably because it sounds like The Stone Roses and doesn't sound like a Seahorses cast-off.

the hair - it's lost its energy (Turrican), Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:18 (ten years ago)

makes me realize how much I miss good guitarists

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:20 (ten years ago)

I saw people saying how they were relieved how they haven't repeated the formula of the first album but how do they feel about them repeating the formula of The Second Coming as that's what they've done here.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:20 (ten years ago)

breaking into heaven is a good call. I loved the second coming so im all for that kinda sound mixed with fools gold.

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:21 (ten years ago)

love the guitar sound on this song too (the best thing about all for one) but the rhythm section im feeling a LOT more on this one.

Unsurprisingly i love it when the roses do funky

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:22 (ten years ago)

I love the Second Coming

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:22 (ten years ago)

It sounds like a halfway house between the post-S/T groove stuff and Second Coming's Zeppelinisms. There's much less guitar wankery here.

the hair - it's lost its energy (Turrican), Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:23 (ten years ago)

yeah this feels more restrained than Breaking Into Heaven for ex., but there's a lot of little details in the guitars

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:24 (ten years ago)

listening now and picturing loads of bucket hats on their way to the bar/bogs

PaulTMA, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:25 (ten years ago)

Brown's voice sounds better on this track than on any track of Second Coming, too!

the hair - it's lost its energy (Turrican), Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:26 (ten years ago)

(x-post to Shakey)

the hair - it's lost its energy (Turrican), Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:26 (ten years ago)

will need a few listens to judge but im not sure how it works as an actual single might be more of a good album track?

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:29 (ten years ago)

Brown's voice sounds better on this track than on any track of Second Coming, too!

Technology has come on leaps and bounds since whenever that was.

Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:32 (ten years ago)

It has a kind of "back half of side 2" vibe to it, yeah, but this has at least got me feeling optimistic for the album.

the hair - it's lost its energy (Turrican), Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:34 (ten years ago)

xpost Yeah, it's interesting that I've seen so many people proclaim them as the return of real music to save us from all this manufactured pop rubbish (not on here obviously), but his voice will have been auto-tuned as much as any pop band, if not more.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:35 (ten years ago)

I'm hoping for more of the groove/funk oriented stuff on the LP. I'm guessing Shakey and Cosmic Slop are too.

the hair - it's lost its energy (Turrican), Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:42 (ten years ago)

it's a thing they're good at, but I like all their sides tbh. for ex. my favorite thing on Second Coming is probably "Your Star Will Shine"

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:46 (ten years ago)

the only songs i dont care for on the second coming are the 2 shitty ballads in the middle of it

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:51 (ten years ago)

i wonder if there will be a 3rd single before the album that is more like the debut album? that would ensure great sales i reckon.
Remember a lot the 1st album fans only liked ten storey love song as it was 60s pop not funk or led zep/hendrix/funkadelic rock

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:53 (ten years ago)

for all the love fools gold gets im pretty damn sure an album like that instead of what the second coming was wouldve still went down like a lead balloon with some of the 1st stone roses album lovers I know.

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 9 June 2016 23:56 (ten years ago)

Wish it were longer, but 7 minutes is awesome. I'll take it. What a pleasure. They have their money, they don't need to do this for anything but the pleasure of doing it, which is a great place to be... For me it's right there between Breaking Into Heaven and Ian's second album, which gestured at this sort of approach but of course he didn't have musicians of this caliber/togetherness/history. Psychedelic groove cool preacher mode. I understand that maybe it doesn't mean anything to anyone but the already converted, and that's totally understandable there is a sweet redemption around this song (moreso than the first comeback single, which I liked) because it somehow really does pick up a baton that was dropped by this same relay team 25 years ago. Crazy.

jaywbabcock, Friday, 10 June 2016 03:04 (ten years ago)

sorry if that's too cheesy for some but that's where i'm at

jaywbabcock, Friday, 10 June 2016 03:07 (ten years ago)

Well that's a bit better.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 10 June 2016 06:09 (ten years ago)

The faintly ridiculous nature of a midnight release on a Thursday means that my first listen to it was whilst sitting on the toilet at 7am, through my phone's speaker. Nora had a little dance to it on the bath mat.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 10 June 2016 06:48 (ten years ago)

I'm sort-of of the opinion that I might leave this until the album comes out.

Put it this way: Was "All for one" unavoidable? I heard it once, and felt it was some sort of intro rather than a stand-alone album track, let alone a single.

Mark G, Friday, 10 June 2016 09:30 (ten years ago)

The new one feels like they wrote an ingredients list of what makes the Stone Roses good and then sellotaped all the different bits together. 'Funky' drumbeat. Wah-wah guitar licks. Backwards bit. Lyrics with vague biblical allusions. Crawling deep bassline. Ian Brown whispering a bit.

Not keen on the mix, which is a bit leaden. It sounds a bit like the Second Coming b-sides, rather than like the stuff after the debut album.
