"from what i can tell, tidal pays rights holders 0.007 cents per play. it looks like that's more than 5 times what apple pays, more than 6 times spotify's rate, and over 23 times what they make from youtube."
good to know. i should probably check what an artist would get/would have gotten from radio plays too to compare.
― StillAdvance, Tuesday, 7 June 2016 15:31 (ten years ago)
yeah i imagine radio royalty rates are much the same as they've always been but i'd be curious what the numbers look like

his first interview - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0MXqmUCN9U&feature=youtu.beor at least the first one in circulation. im guessing this is where the idea of him being half-italian began.
― StillAdvance, Tuesday, 7 June 2016 16:12 (ten years ago)
oops, obv NOT his first interview. i didnt notice it was from 1981.
― StillAdvance, Tuesday, 7 June 2016 16:13 (ten years ago)
well someone is clearly in a position to do deals for his music, so its odd that everything is still there on youtube.
everything from everybody is on youtube, prince is literally the only person i can think of who was so assiduous in erasing himself from it

What's everyone's favorite Prince album from the 2000's onward? I think 3121 has aged incredibly well. Art Official Age is pretty excellent too.
― DavidLeeRoth, Wednesday, 8 June 2016 11:56 (ten years ago)
3121 but I still haven't heard rainbow children
― scarcity festival (Jon not Jon), Wednesday, 8 June 2016 12:08 (ten years ago)
A random stomach growl yesterday sounded a lot like a Camille vocal. For a second I thought I was getting a visitation.
― Half Man Half Disco Mystic (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 8 June 2016 12:16 (ten years ago)
in order, based on memory rather than hearing them recently - rainbow children, 3121, art official, musicology, MPLS sound, 20 ten, planet earth. never heard the NPGMC compilations, and didnt care much for the third eye girl projects. NEWS is a masterclass in why prince shouldnt make jazz albums.
― StillAdvance, Wednesday, 8 June 2016 12:17 (ten years ago)
What do u think of The War and Lotusflower?
― scarcity festival (Jon not Jon), Wednesday, 8 June 2016 12:20 (ten years ago)
while DJing on Sunday i was randomly playing Play In The Sunshine as it was outdoors and scorching hot. a guy came up and we chatted about Prince and turns out he had the symbol tat and saw him '21 times' on his London residency in 2007. i said i'd not really heard much that he'd done since the early 90s and straight off he recommended "3121 and The Rainbow Children". so that's what an ultra-hardcore fan thinks anyway.
― piscesx, Wednesday, 8 June 2016 12:23 (ten years ago)
xpost - i dont remember lotusflower that well which is why i only listed MPLS sound (basically 00s prince doing 80s prince), but it might be decent, not sure. i only remember crimson and clover. the war was just a 40 min long song. i dunno, i remember it being sort of band of gypsies/santana-psych-dreamy-jam sounding with prince in one of his lecturing modes on top (reminds me of something from the gold experience era). i wouldnt mind seeing what its like now.

funny background on the SOTT cover on soundcloud -
This is a arrangement I recorded in 2015 as part of my "Covered" album. Unfortunately we were not allowed to put in on the album..Prince didn't really like people recording his music lol..But I feel now is a good time to let everyone hear it! This is my favorite prince joint "Sign O The Times"..the message is still relevant..Prince you are missed..Thank you for unapologetically being you..
he seemed to be really inconsistent in who got to cover his songs (and when), and who didnt.
― StillAdvance, Wednesday, 8 June 2016 15:06 (ten years ago)
Enjoying that glasper, thanks!

are there any instances of Prince blocking a cover earlier than Elvis Costello in 1997? it seems like that was the beginning of it becoming a common practice for him in the 2000s.
― Dierks Bentley's Holistic Detective Agency (some dude), Wednesday, 8 June 2016 17:08 (ten years ago)
although i'm sure he blocked a lot of samples after letting a couple early ones like MC Hammer and Arrested Development go ahead
― Dierks Bentley's Holistic Detective Agency (some dude), Wednesday, 8 June 2016 17:09 (ten years ago)
2pac sampled (or replayed) pop life. and i think he sampled the end of darling nikki too. so that was allowed for whatever reason. i remember him saying he got a lot of requests around the time of emancipation, but whether that was really true, or he just blocked them all, im not sure.
― StillAdvance, Wednesday, 8 June 2016 17:18 (ten years ago)
'96 was definitely when samples of '80s R&B and pop were taking over mainstream rap so that makes sense, there probably would've been a few Bad Boy smashes with Prince samples if he said yes moer
― Dierks Bentley's Holistic Detective Agency (some dude), Wednesday, 8 June 2016 17:21 (ten years ago)
yeah, i could def imagine puffy reworking stuff like when doves cry or looping some of the time stuff even. biggie's nasty girl im sure was meant to have a vanity sample. would u die 4 me sounds obviously like it was meant to have a sample of kiss too. there were quite a few R&B covers of his songs around that time also, obv.

it actually has some creepy prince moments, which i was not aware was possible but there's a sequence when prince takes the unconscious aura and sorta tries to peek at her breastsalso prince's chest hair is shaved into a heart with words in the middle that say "beat me" it's a weird fucking movie
