i had to hear it not on a loud tube train where the subtleties were lost

this is srsly the most a band has ever improved between 1st and 2nd album tho
lol

I still like the first one more

The difference isn't as great as imago pretends anyway; if you work off the deluxe version of the debut it basically disappears.
― Tim F, Sunday, 15 May 2016 22:14 (eight years ago) link
Yeah
― Spottie, Sunday, 15 May 2016 22:21 (eight years ago) link
it's a big improvement but it's not like where they started is anywhere close to bad. the biggest improvement is probably just the increased focus on the production from having a bigger budget?
Loving Someone is definitely one of the weaker tracks but I wouldn't skip it, and it's better than So Far (It's Alright) for sure
― ufo, Sunday, 15 May 2016 23:48 (eight years ago) link
"So Far (It's Alright)" has better lyrics - some of Matt's best probably.
― Tim F, Sunday, 15 May 2016 23:50 (eight years ago) link
yeah that really makes all the difference

Surely that was the video for The Sound?
― Roaming gang of aggressive circlepits (ithappens), Monday, 16 May 2016 12:41 (eight years ago) link
Ah, incorporating journalistic quotes into your material. Shrewd move.
― Turrican, Monday, 16 May 2016 12:55 (eight years ago) link
One thing is for sure, if '80s revivalism winds up becoming a joke I'll be holding these dickheads solely responsible. They're certainly doing more than their bit.
― Turrican, Monday, 16 May 2016 13:01 (eight years ago) link
They could retire, give all their money was going to Syrian refugees, spend the rest of the lives working in camps with said refugees, disavow all their music and insist all future royalties were devoted to anonymously boosting education and health spending and you'd still accuse them of cynicism.
― Roaming gang of aggressive circlepits (ithappens), Monday, 16 May 2016 14:05 (eight years ago) link
Damn lack of edit post function: "give all their money to Syrian refugees"

you're saying this nearly a decade after 'it was acceptable in teh 80s' helped transform calvin harris into a huge pop-edm force smh

anyone else at the brooklyn show tonight?
all told i'd prob prefer to see them again in a smaller venue but it was a really edifying show. i feel like if they wrote 5 more songs like "the sound" they could be the biggest band in the world but it's cool that they don't and have teenagers grooving to shit like "a change of heart" and d'angelo's trumpet player's flugelhorn solo on some robo-gospel stadium song. they really sold "the sound" actually it was prob my fav moment of the night & obv that's far from my fav song of theirs. the crowd also seemed really into "loving someone". also maybe we're so distanced from "the city" and "chocolate" that it's hard to remember what they actually sound like but it sounded to me like they were playing them w/ more groovy guitar figures a la "girls" which was pretty cool.
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 18 May 2016 04:54 (eight years ago) link
I love Change of Heart but live his voice is really thin and whiny on it. On the record it's deep, lush, enveloping. :(
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 29 May 2016 16:36 (eight years ago) link
i'd given the 1995 wide berth based soley on their name (despite making substanial room in my life for king gizzard and the lizard wizard), but i like it when you sleep for you are a fiona apple album is pretty okay. they're better at soulful ballads than upbeat 80s dance pop, and i have no use whatsoever for the owl city ambient that bloats the album's midsection, but it boils down to a solid 45 minutes:
Love MeUGH!Change of HeartShe's AmericanIf I Believe YouSomebody ElseThe SoundParisNanaShe Lays Down

most of those listed tracks are dance pop though
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 29 May 2016 20:12 (eight years ago) link
yeah, it felt too mean to cut "love me" and "the sound". with "nana", those'd be the next to go.
favorites are "change of heart", "if i believe you", "paris" and "she lays down".

lol, they sound to me like a band struggling to disguise themselves, and they do it reasonably well. but it's only when they relax into sap that they really convince me.
― like $500 billion in stuffed fart sales and I have an idea (contenderizer), Sunday, 29 May 2016 21:08 (eight years ago) link
They could always disguise themselves as a non-functioning band.
― Turrican, Sunday, 29 May 2016 21:16 (eight years ago) link
What does that even mean
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 30 May 2016 00:44 (eight years ago) link
it means turrican really just can't let go of this one

Just chiming in since I was very late to the party due to their horrible name, but what great songs and sound - both albums are very strong and "This Must Be My Dream" is perfect summer driving music. Love how they use 80s signifiers as a tool rather than pastiche (why I also love Haim).

^^ otm, and i think the "somebody else" video folds into the latter category
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 8 July 2016 13:45 (eight years ago) link
all of the videos are above and beyond the ones from the last album cycle, excepting maybe "robbers"
"ugh" video was super tasteful so maybe it's the worst one even tho it might be the most objectively "good"
― J0rdan S., Friday, 8 July 2016 13:48 (eight years ago) link
One of the comments on the youtube clip for "Somebody Else" is "I want someone to fuck me like Matty Healy fucks Matty Healy" and it's gotten more than 2000 replies of people saying "OMG same" etc. in about 17 hours.
― Tim F, Friday, 8 July 2016 17:36 (eight years ago) link
This video basically narrativises in comi-tragic form the herculean levels of self-absorption signalled by all the previous clips the whole album. As far as I can tell the lyrics on the screen when he is singing karaoke are just "ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME".
"Ugh" probably the most boring clip but it's saved by Matt doing that little "reeling off" face/motion when he sings "Me and my things, my car, my living..."
