What I could do without is the muddy mixing, especially on the opening tracks.

i had just cranked it up when vocoder Kanye (?) comes in on the first track, and twice the volume of the rest of the mix.

for all the noise he's made about how free releases should be eligible for Grammys, you'd think he'd gotten have a better mixing & mastering pass on this.

also i never thought i'd hear Bieber over a Mount Kimbie sample.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Friday, 13 May 2016 13:40 (ten years ago)

there is so much jesus on this album that it made me feel physically nauseous by the end

like i'd never really connected w/chance on an emotional level and the amount of god-n-family stuff is p much why, and it's so overbearing here

lots of nice beats though but whatever i can't listen to this again

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 13 May 2016 15:18 (ten years ago)

Godless Europeans smh

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 13 May 2016 15:23 (ten years ago)

my firm view that christianity is a poison is informed 100% by too much, not too little, exposure to it

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 13 May 2016 15:25 (ten years ago)

my firm view is that popular music as we know it literally does not exist without black church music

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 13 May 2016 15:52 (ten years ago)

i'm sure you can trace the history of music further back than that, not that it's a relevant point to make

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 13 May 2016 15:58 (ten years ago)

lol i'm as atheist as could but getting down on this for the gospel speak is laughable imo

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 13 May 2016 16:22 (ten years ago)

could be*

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 13 May 2016 16:23 (ten years ago)

why is it laughable to have a negative reaction to overbearing christianity?

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 13 May 2016 16:43 (ten years ago)

I just don't see that it's overbearing. It's part of the esthetic sure.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 13 May 2016 16:47 (ten years ago)

Stare at the cue cards, take out the juke parts
Take out the God references, just leave the cool parts

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 13 May 2016 16:53 (ten years ago)

i can assure you my antipathy to christianity is not because it's "uncool"

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 13 May 2016 16:55 (ten years ago)

but you understand that the role of christianity is very different on chicago's south side & in its music than it may be for yourself

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 13 May 2016 16:58 (ten years ago)

i didn't frame my reaction as anything other than a personal response

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 13 May 2016 16:59 (ten years ago)

i think you need jesus brah

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 13 May 2016 17:10 (ten years ago)

i have a real allergy to christianity which is why i have trouble with later prefab sprout records but it didn't really bother me on this record at all?

idk its so joyous and fun who cares

i can understand being put off by the relentless positivity, though. brainwasher (who hasn't posted on here in some time ergo i will speak on his behalf lol) told me he's more into vince staples or it resonates more w/ him, and I can understand that pov even if i like chance more; its optimism can be blinding

ideologically im probably also more aligned w/ vince's worldview but musically i much prefer chance

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 13 May 2016 18:34 (ten years ago)

omg that synth bass in the chorus of "Smoke Break."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 13 May 2016 18:38 (ten years ago)

musically it feels super generous, i get really caught up in the swirl of it

ooooooooh!

flappy bird, Friday, 13 May 2016 18:41 (ten years ago)

chance isn't all relentless positivity though and i think that came through a lot on Acid Rap

, Friday, 13 May 2016 18:47 (ten years ago)

This feels like the lightbeam gospel that TLOP hinted at but didn't really deliver. I love it.

Frederik B, Friday, 13 May 2016 18:48 (ten years ago)

gospel rap (in honor of new chance)

lag∞n, Friday, 13 May 2016 18:49 (ten years ago)

This might be competing with Lemonade for album of the year.

Frederik B, Friday, 13 May 2016 18:58 (ten years ago)

this is way better lemonade is p bad

lag∞n, Friday, 13 May 2016 18:59 (ten years ago)

i do think he has sort of deemphasized his own rapping... this def shares a sort of structure or maybe ethos w/ the social experiment album where the guests are really foregrounded and he feels more like part of a tapestry than the center of attention. it's obv not as pronounced as surf but it feels more of a piece w/ that than acid rap. similarly there was a sociological perspective on acid rap that i found really illuminating & refreshing and that too has receded a bit prob because the circumstances of his own life have changed drastically.

J0rdan S., Friday, 13 May 2016 18:59 (ten years ago)

acid rap was p beats to rhymes trad this one is crazily songy p impressive im liking him more like that, didnt listen to surf

lag∞n, Friday, 13 May 2016 19:01 (ten years ago)

yeah i mean this one is obv crazy accomplished on a music & songwriting level and by comparison acid rap feels stripped down. but there was like an overarching aesthetic vision to acid rap that still felt preternatural to me & something like "good ass outro" was just crazy good on a musical level. i do miss that beats to rhymes thing tho, i really was savoring the second "blessings"

J0rdan S., Friday, 13 May 2016 19:05 (ten years ago)

is it crazy to admit I like him less when he sings?

CHANCE THE GOSPELLER

johnny crunch, Friday, 13 May 2016 19:08 (ten years ago)

jord obvs a lot more chance passionate than me, but i feel like i might be getting into this one

lag∞n, Friday, 13 May 2016 19:18 (ten years ago)

ftr i think this album is great and a logical progression for him, im just picking nits

u should listen to surf

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 13 May 2016 19:25 (ten years ago)

Listening to Sunday Candy on repeat, sooooo good. I liked it before, but not like this.

The way his singing is the rhythm track in Blessings is so good.

Frederik B, Friday, 13 May 2016 19:25 (ten years ago)

i will listen to surf i mean tbh i did at least .5 times already before

lag∞n, Friday, 13 May 2016 19:27 (ten years ago)

I love that 'Sunday Candy' is both a reference to the eucharist and oral sex.

Frederik B, Friday, 13 May 2016 19:29 (ten years ago)

I'm loving this so far. It's more immediate and song-oriented than Surf, but it takes the "party and everyone's invited" vibe that I loved about that project and combines it with the joyous and infectious personality of Acid Rap.

thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Friday, 13 May 2016 19:36 (ten years ago)

I'm also glad that Somewhere in Paradise didn't make the tape. It's pretty lightweight when compared to some of the tracks that did make the cut.

a poon shaped mule (voodoo chili), Friday, 13 May 2016 19:51 (ten years ago)

I keep hearing them sing *Never Trump' in the second part of Finish Line.

Frederik B, Friday, 13 May 2016 20:23 (ten years ago)

juke jam is incred imo

johnny crunch, Friday, 13 May 2016 22:52 (ten years ago)

oh god the mix on first two tracks

Van Horn Street, Friday, 13 May 2016 22:53 (ten years ago)

i hope they Kanye that shit and fix it
