how can this be anything other than atrocious, really

is there enough time for ilx to pre-cover this?

Give us a title and we can do it.

Actually, if they announce an album, we really should ...

ore often extraordinarily terrible hoary rock cliche bollocks.

.. You thinking The Seahorses? Or was this "step one" towards it?

Mark G, Thursday, 12 May 2016 13:48 (ten years ago)

the lyrics to drivin' south are total rock bollocks iirc

IIIIIIIII'M GONNA BREAK RIGHT INTO HEAVEN

*generic heavy riff*

afriendlypioneer, Thursday, 12 May 2016 14:29 (ten years ago)

"I'm on a tightrope baby, nine miles high, striding through the clouds on my ribbon in the sky"

It's just fucking awful. Love Spreads is OK, Begging You is OK, How Do You Sleep is OK, Daybreak is kind of weird ad-libbed cod-funk but not awful despite that description, but the rest is just awful, awful, awful.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 12 May 2016 14:32 (ten years ago)

just realised i'd never knowingly heard the reformed roses playing anything and i was morbidly curious whether ian brown still sounded like he'd undergone a laryngectomy

all i could find on youtube was footage where the crowd's singing was louder than his, so it'll be interesting to hear what he sounds like on the new single

(main prostitute from Game Of Thrones) (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 12 May 2016 14:33 (ten years ago)

"I am very excited, for them mainly," Gallagher told NME of the band's return. "They're going to play some new songs. I bumped into Ian in a supermarket recently. He was buying chocolate flavoured shower gel. This is not a joke. He leant and said 'have you tried this?' and I said of course I hadn't. He swears by it, says it's amazing. And before it turned into a photoshoot with everyone and their cameraphones, he was telling me how excited they are by it all. He said it was like they were making their first record again."

afriendlypioneer, Thursday, 12 May 2016 14:34 (ten years ago)

although the rock bollocks on the second coming is indeed terrible, i'd still rather have that than the seahorses' 'Strap on Sally chased us down the alley / We feared for our behinds / Oasis was a shop with shoes so hot / They were sure to blow your minds'

(main prostitute from Game Of Thrones) (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 12 May 2016 14:37 (ten years ago)

you realise those lines are a direct quote from Auden, right?

I really do like 'Breaking into Heaven.' It's a shame it drops off after that.

afriendlypioneer, Thursday, 12 May 2016 14:51 (ten years ago)

I am sure this record will swagger

I dont expect much but im still excited that there's new music by one of my fave ever bands. I loved the second coming, they should let Ian do the lyrics though.

Odysseus, Thursday, 12 May 2016 15:03 (ten years ago)

Ian let John do most of the lyrics and songwriting on Second Coming because he thought there'd be plenty of chance for him on other albums. And there was! His solo albums.

Exclusive - the new Stone Roses single sounds like 'Tomorrow Never Knows' by the Beatles, esp. the guitar & drums...

I'm kinda curious as to what this is going to sound like, whether it'll be an extension of Second Coming or self-titled album retread. I'll be very surprised if it sounds more like Golden Greats.

But... could you imagine a formation in your lemonade? Ho! (Turrican), Thursday, 12 May 2016 17:22 (ten years ago)

So, I'm guessing this is to be released to make number one next week?

Mark G, Thursday, 12 May 2016 17:28 (ten years ago)

5 LTW articles on it by tomorrow lunchtime.

^ Ha! Yeah, totally!

But... could you imagine a formation in your lemonade? Ho! (Turrican), Thursday, 12 May 2016 18:34 (ten years ago)

Just heard it. It's a cross between "Something Burning" and something off of Second Coming.

Poliopolice, Thursday, 12 May 2016 18:55 (ten years ago)

Definitely not the chiming, Byrd-sy thing... was hoping for something more melancholy like "Mersey Paradise" but seemed alright. Definitely sounded like them.

I'm hearing something by Beaty Heart? which was not what I wanted to hear

Οὖτις, Thursday, 12 May 2016 19:03 (ten years ago)

ah, they played it twice in a row a minute ago

Poliopolice, Thursday, 12 May 2016 19:04 (ten years ago)

Lyrically and musically, kind of had the "One Love" / "What the World is Waiting For" vibe. The riff was a little Beatle-y though I can't pinpoint exactly which song, but tone was heavier, and had more noodly guitar, like stuff off Second Coming.

Poliopolice, Thursday, 12 May 2016 19:07 (ten years ago)

I wouldn't put it among their best songs, but it probably would have been in the top half of Second Coming.

Poliopolice, Thursday, 12 May 2016 19:08 (ten years ago)

Oh, it's on Spotify already.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 12 May 2016 19:13 (ten years ago)

rather displeased with the lyrics, honestly... in their prime, they were able to straddle this delicate line between earnest positivity and sublimated contempt... but lyrically, this seems a little on the cheesy side.

Poliopolice, Thursday, 12 May 2016 19:15 (ten years ago)

I felt a mix of enjoyment and just plain relief it wasn't as terrible as it could have been. The lyrics are terrible, the riff's pretty good. I do have expectations for the album now.

cpl593H, Thursday, 12 May 2016 19:16 (ten years ago)

Yeah, Ian totally dropped the ball here, not that anyone was expecting some Bob Dylan shit, but still...

cpl593H, Thursday, 12 May 2016 19:17 (ten years ago)

New Radiohead, Stone Roses and Super Furry Animals within a week... sorely tempted to check my calendar to see what year this is.

and Misfits reunion. LOL.

Poliopolice, Thursday, 12 May 2016 19:19 (ten years ago)

i still love this band though, and regardless of how bad this song could have been, i'd still be excited for a new album

Poliopolice, Thursday, 12 May 2016 19:23 (ten years ago)

Pretty decent single tho its not Love Spreads level good. Its at least not a retread of the 1st album which is what I was dreading.

Odysseus, Thursday, 12 May 2016 19:29 (ten years ago)

Haslam's got cloth ears, it's 'I Want To Tell You' not 'Tomorrow Never Knows'

Tbh this is a dud. Half of it's shit and the other half I perhaps unfairly blame for a lot of stuff I hate about the UK indie scene and even the good stuff is so overplayed I don't really need to hear it again

itt I tell the Stone Roses to fuck off in 2024. Finger on the pulse mw

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 2 March 2024 23:46 (two years ago)

My apologies Colon Poo.

You have much better taste in music than I do...

BriefCandles, Sunday, 3 March 2024 00:23 (two years ago)

haha I definitely don't

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 3 March 2024 01:06 (two years ago)

I first heard this album in high school about 1999 and man I was completely totally 100% obsessed. “OMG! Best album ever!”, etc. As an American I missed all the cultural baggage associated with it and all the shitty music it influenced. I think that helped a bit. And of course the version I bought had “Elephant Stone” and “Fools Gold” tacked on, so I got more of a greatest hits album. Now it’s 25 years later and I am listening to it now and it still sounds pretty goddamn perfect. John Squire is the star of the show: the chiming arpeggiated riffs just keep coming at you over and over again and yet the guitar never overpowers the songs - easily one of the best rock guitarists I’ve heard. Shame that he obviously used up his entire bag of tricks on this one album. Didn’t they spend like eight years in between the time they formed and the time they released the album? Perfectionist bastards.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 4 March 2024 16:43 (two years ago)

Agree that the album still sounds good and I also think that Fool's Gold/Something's Burning were a great next step forward which was totally forgotten by the time of the disastrous second album. I'm still surprised that Oasis are taken seriously as something amazing as opposed to this. Marr's autobiography (he is a huge hometown booster) totally ignores them (and the Mondays too I think).

three of the doctor's valuable bats are now dead (broom air), Monday, 4 March 2024 16:55 (two years ago)

Yes it’s still a fucking great album and anyone who doesn’t like “fools gold” is not to be trusted

brimstead, Monday, 4 March 2024 17:17 (two years ago)

the second coming is quite underrated. Take out 2 of the acoustic tracks in the middle and it'd be great.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 4 March 2024 18:33 (two years ago)

Second Coming had great b-sides as well, particularly the ones that were recorded after the album was completed. Would love a deluxe reissue

Thanks, I’ve listened to these b-sides and yeah they’re ok.
I still like this album a lot and listen to it every now and then. There isn’t a track I don’t like actually. Maybe « Tears » with the guitar solos which are a bridge too far past the Led Zep line. « Love Spreads » and « Breaking into heaven » are monsters !

xp Rehearsals for the first of the 2012-era gigs so must be early 2012, it's from the Shane Meadows film, which i'm *in* at one brief point.

A totally under-heralded drummer.

I dunno... seems like he gets singled out for praise in just about everything I've ever read about this band over the years.

Kim Kimberly, Saturday, 20 September 2025 16:33 (eight months ago)

I seem to recall all of three of the musicians getting praised as musicians in a way a lot of their peers didn't really get praised.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 20 September 2025 17:43 (eight months ago)

In indie circles but they don't have the name recognition among the public (or record sales) that the likes of Oasis have.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 20 September 2025 20:04 (eight months ago)

For sure, but no one praised, for example, Oasis's rhythm section.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 20 September 2025 20:13 (eight months ago)

I was talking as musicians. As in, guitar hero John Squire, a phrase I probably heard before I heard the band.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 20 September 2025 20:14 (eight months ago)

When the first album came out John Squire definitely had a reputation among NME readers
