Oh god, is that coming up? I really want to see them but not here.

emil.y, Tuesday, 10 May 2016 13:53 (eight years ago) link

UK Subs are playing on Friday... I think Nots are playing soon-ish?

I am really, really, really looking forward to the new Good Throb single.

I don't want to just ignore it but don't want to pry either. Why don't you want to see them here? No pressure to answer that if you don't want to.

This record is like 3 years old, but this Young Trynas 7" I'm listening to now is pretty fucking good.

Well, considering that the promoters and half the crowd will be made up of people who I thought were close friends but turned out to really really not be, I'm not convinced it would be much fun for me, nor good for my mental health to be in that environment. Tbh I might not even be let in anyway, I'm certainly not invited.

Anyway I only wanted to know if there was a new thread to indulge in some rampant self-promotion but now I'm not really feeling like it.

emil.y, Tuesday, 10 May 2016 14:52 (eight years ago) link

I'm sorry I immediately regretted posting that question, it's really none of my business I just didn't want to just blithely ignore it, like should I be boycotting the venue for some reason I don't know. I'll go back in my box now.

Should probably just start a new thread anyway.

none of your business maybe, but also a perfectly reasonable question and you certainly surrounded it in language meant to make it clear emil.y didn't have to answer if she didn't want. but she did. you have nothing to apologize for, CP.

Good Throb are great

feel like we don't really need to make new threads every year since each one only gets like 98 posts

de l'asshole (flopson), Tuesday, 10 May 2016 19:55 (eight years ago) link

yeah that's almost certainly otm

Good Throb have a single in the v near future and are then breaking up, or at least not doing anything for the foreseeable future, due to members moving thousands of miles apart. they are/were/remain fantastic

one month passes...

This Bad Breeding album is pretty good innit.

Also I found a UK distro selling the Exit Order EP from last year which I've wanted for ages but LVEUM sold out of it before I could order it.

Pat Umunna Glass (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 30 June 2016 06:54 (seven years ago) link

Ooooh new GLOSS, so excited.

Anyway, the aborted self-promo I was gonna do upthread is that my band is on this comp of female/female-fronted punk/DIY groups. There are some brilliant things on here, many friends and some heroes (I <3 Rakta): https://emotional-response-recs.bandcamp.com/album/typical-girls

emil.y, Thursday, 30 June 2016 13:02 (seven years ago) link

I've seen that comp, cool bands but seems like almost all previously released stuff so I have a lot of it anyway. The Primetime song looks like it's exclusive I guess.

yeah was hoping it was gonna be unreleased stuff tbh but all the bands/songs are good basically so I hope it serves as an 'in' for curious types

emil.y which group are you in?

Seriously, they are brilliant. Go see them. I love them love them love them.

emil.y, Friday, 1 July 2016 15:23 (seven years ago) link

^ I saw them at Static Shock Weekend a couple of years ago, they were a new discovery for me at the time. Due to a last minute line-up order change I accidentally bought their 12" and 7" thinking that Diat (who played before them but were supposed to play after them) were called Rakta. So I waited nervously after realising my mistake for them to come onstage really hoping that the band that was actually called Rakta turned out to be good now that I'd spend £15 on them by mistake. So that was a relief when they were actually good. Er, cool story bro.

Slvm ov L3gs not too shabby either tbh.

cool i will make a point to go!

emil.y i love this :)

it doesn't remind me of the mekons exactly but there's something of their spirit in this imo

Steve Gunn Mann-Dude (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 1 July 2016 16:08 (seven years ago) link

new album by NOTS (who are on the comp discussed just above) is good as hell. think this http://www.heavenlyrecordings.com/news/2016/06/nots-to-release-new-album-cosmetic-this-autumn/ is the only track from it online currently, it's the longest one and by no means one of its best moments but really knocked out by this rekid either way

Sad about GLOSS, but I totally get where they're coming from.

emil.y, Monday, 26 September 2016 12:27 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, as much as their music meant to me, it's much better that they break up now rather than sacrifice their health and autonomy.

three weeks pass...

Going to rep for a couple of friends' things that people on this thread might be interested in:

1. Scrap Brain - their demo tape is properly great.

Ha, which one? The singer is a good friend of mine, but I don't know any of the others.

I don't know what he plays in that band, but on their bandcamp pic he's the guy at the back.

Fake Limbs have been on these threads before, they're very Jesus Lizard-y skronk punk. Blind Shake have been around a long time and are garage punk with touches of surf and Devo-y nerd twitchiness. Sueves sound a lot like the Makers, a little like the Peechees - the singer has that classic whiny brat voice.

Band name is hard to search for on ILX but I'm loving Pill a lot. One EP and one album in August - they're noisy and funny and sound amazing turned up to 10 in the car, plus there's a sax.

More post-punk than punk but this Subnormal Girls compilation that came out this year is fucking fantastic, one of the best comps of this kind I've ever heard.

emil.y, Wednesday, 16 November 2016 14:40 (seven years ago) link

I was only familiar with the Liggers (from Messthetics - same track included here) and the Petticoats and Morbid Opera (from Killed By Death - different songs) before but I don't think there's a bad song on this comp.

I only made this connection quite recently because I don't usually read sites like the Quietus unless someone links to something from here, and didn't know the ilxor who writes this column's real name (I assume he's too modest to link it here himself? so I won't mention who it is just in case... :)) but this series of articles is highly recommended for punk/non-indie underground fans:

http://thequietus.com/features/gardner-s-straight-hedge

Like, I'm going through some of the columns from this year and it's all good stuff that I've often been finding out about from blogs, this thread, following certain labels/distros (mostly La Vida Es Un Mus tbh) and will definitely be reading this regularly from now on.
