unless you're looking for a very specific press of lovesexy it shouldn't be expensive at all https://www.discogs.com/sell/list?sort=price%2Casc&master_id=22006&ev=mb&format=Vinyl
only 80s album that should be a bit pricey (but not very) is black album, on then it looks like Come (1994) and records onwards can be expensive on vinyl
there are so many prince records I don't see the need for reissues but if it makes people happy it's good

Amateurist, you're comparing US sales for one album to worldwide sales for another. 21 in all likelihood sold 10+ million more worldwide but it's 11 times platinum in the U.S. to Purple Rain's 13x platinum. Sorry to be pedantic but I'm a total geek for chart/sales stats and it still raises my hackles when everyone mixes this stuff up, even though no one cares (actually, it's probably because no one cares).
But yeah, Purple Rain was totally huge. Together with 1999 - at 4x platinum the runner up sales-wise in the U.S. at least - that was his moment. There's a reason why the singles from those two (plus "Kiss" of course) so thoroughly and irritatingly dominate all the tributes and the post-mortem public conversation around Prince; through "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" each record was good for one or two top 10 hits, but he never had a true blockbuster album again. Even Diamonds and Pearls stopped short of 3 million.

santana paying tribute with something that isnt purple rain (its a song from the rainbow children instead, which is surprising, but very cool (though santana gets the title wrong)

On the face of it, it was something of a drop off post PR...3 million, 4 million, 2million..of course we're talking an album a year+ protégé + numerous singles...a lot of product up to the end of the decade

a weird list of vault contents -

Batdance Project — Remixes and expanded versions featuring Roxette as Catwoman.
I presume this means Roxette the Swedish band? I guess the writer doesn't know that "Roxette" isn't the name of the lead singer... Unless Per Gessle also plays Batwoman, which would certainly be interesting.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 May 2016 09:12 (ten years ago)
Oh, after reading the list a bit further, it's obviously a joke item. Still, get your artist names right, parody writer!
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 May 2016 09:17 (ten years ago)
i worked a U.S. Dream Academy event last night, and they revealed that Prince had once quietly donated a large sum to their organization.

Well, now I have "Life in a Northern Town" stuck in my head.
― how's life, Wednesday, 4 May 2016 09:39 (ten years ago)
re Diamonds And Pearls; that was his biggest UK album; triple platinum! Purple Rain only went double. baffles me that. D&P sold about 10 times as many copies as Sign O The Times.
― piscesx, Wednesday, 4 May 2016 10:04 (ten years ago)
Double albums be expensive.
Also, D&P was very CD.

niels, all those copies of Lovesexy are outside the US, and shipping is around $20
kinda blows my mind that almost every single copy of the US pressing that's on sale has been bought by ppl in other countries, I see this with other records as well

Mauzy said that Andrew Kornfeld told him that the others “screamed” when they found Prince and “were in too much shock” to call 911.Unfamiliar with Paisley Park, Andrew Kornfeld simply told the dispatcher, “We’re at Prince’s house.”Asked again to give an address, he said simply: “The people are just distraught. … We’re in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and we are at the home of Prince

Duane train on WFMU today bumped four Billy Paul cuts (including very funny customization of "Let me in") and then 2:30 of PRN rarities, starting with what sounded like a very very rough pass at "the screams of Passion" which would be credited to the Time on Graffiti Bridge (calls out the chord changes to whomever) and then a STAGGERING rehearsal of "something in the water…" evidently from '84 and with a monstrous solo…was not familiar with the provenance of many in the next two hours, but thought they sounded like they would have been recorded in the past 20 years…nope, most from the '80s…finished up with a live "17 days," "1999" and a demo for the Mavis "dog in heat" tune.

Which Prince would famously not let him record and release as a b-side. Wasn't Prince also one of the only ones who said no to "Weird" Al?

Has Al ever talked about what the parodies would have been?
I have to admit that the other day I was making some sourdough in the breadmachine and came up with "Now morning, noon, and night/I bake you BREAD". I was ashamed though because I knew Prince wouldn't have wanted it that way.

It is a motherfucking karaoke SMASH, I can tell you. I sang it with a friend in Okinawa a couple of years ago and we screwed up the programming on the machine, it came on twice back-to-back. After a second of fear when it began again, I leaned to my friend and hissed "falsetto" and everything was all right forever.
― MatthewK, Thursday, 5 May 2016 12:27 (ten years ago)
Purple Rain is the only song I've ever sung at karaoke. Apparently I nailed it though. There was a dude who was there that night, whenever I'd run into him in later years would greet me with "PURPLE RAIN!"
― how's life, Thursday, 5 May 2016 12:42 (ten years ago)
That was my exact experience with people who were at that karaoke night. I had sympathy messages from some of them when P passed away.

Prince parodied himself all the time, anyone "doing" him would just be a crap version of Prince.
He has that one thing in common with Robert Smith, then.
― Mark G, Thursday, 5 May 2016 14:17 (ten years ago)
forgot about this song from the Bright Lights Big City soundtrack, not sure if this is "Camille" but the vocals are def pitched up
