The second half of this is definitely more "adventurous" sonically but I dunno if that makes it any better?

This reminds me of Take Care in that there's aspects of a few beats that I like, but they still have this overall distant feeling that doesn't connect, "9" being a good example. "Hype"/"Grammys"-style shout flow still goofy imo.

Dude is the reverse of certain other rappers I like who are eccentric/difficult-to-defend in some sense, he seems pretty normal & some of the criticism I see focusing on his persona I think is off-base, just never been sold on him as a rapper or his production aesthetic, the latter of which seems to get little criticism

Jesus Christ put this thing on 5 seconds in he's sadsack whining that his friends don't call him pick up the phone be an adult dipshit

Those aren't his friends. He's whining about how his ex-girlfriends who said they'd be his friends after the break up aren't calling him. lol

"this makes me part of the problem, I know, but no artist makes me feel old, decrepit and out of touch so much as drake. and he's older than me even."

that reads suspiciously like something drake would say. 'why you trying to make me feel old... and you aint even older than me, i know...'

i have exactly this, the fact of him being a cool guy who the cool kids like is far beyond my comprehension

I just learned this morning from an article in FACT, which referred to Larry Graham as "Drake's Uncle," that Larry Graham is Drake's uncle.

WTF mind blown

^^Teenie Hodges is his other uncle. And his pops played drums for Jerry Lee Lewis.

Looks like the CD edition of this is changed and edited down for time. There's literally no reason to do this when this album would be pretty much a textbook double album candidate if it wasn't crafted specifically for streaming.

I would say "well shit, to get it under 80 minutes, all they had to do was take off Hotline Bling, it is demarcated as a bonus track after all", but I know exactly why they didn't do that

advice still applicable

rockpalast '82 (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 24 May 2016 21:11 (eight years ago) link

When he did "Hype" on SNL I was surprised he didn't transition into a ballad after the first verse

That song really displays the issues that are still there with his rapping, this over-rehearsed, every syllable precisely mapped out deal. It starts ok and the transition into the hook works but that's it.

nova, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 02:53 (eight years ago) link

four months pass...

crikey this really died a death on here quickly huh. i think Feel No Ways is his best ever song; i didn't notice it at first but it's a wonderful thing.

i was talking to my brother about Views today, I said Drake took a massive L with it, then he reminded me it was #1 on Billboard for 13 weeks straight

flappy bird, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 16:55 (seven years ago) link

Yeah really depends on the measure you use. As an album it was a failure, but as a financially successful mass... mission accomplished.

Gotta believe this album will mute a lot of the excitement for the next one, though, so his career may still suffer for its mediocrity down the line

Evan R, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 17:01 (seven years ago) link

i really like my edit of this that cuts out 1/3 of the songs

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 27 September 2016 17:27 (seven years ago) link

Do you have a link? I do remember good songs being in there, but they're packaged with so much redundant emptiness I haven't had the energy to sift them out

Evan R, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 17:45 (seven years ago) link

I also really, really hate the singles on this album ("Too Good" exempted, if that even counts). NWTS felt like an over-padded disappointment initially, too, but it had the knockout singles to keep me coming back enough for the rest to grow on me

Evan R, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 17:47 (seven years ago) link

basically i just flat cut out anything that doesn't have at least a tangential connection to R&B

u with me?
feel no ways
weston road flows
redemption
with you
faithful
controlla
one dance
child's play
too good
fire & desire
hotline bling

you could still trim some fat there but this was basically my quick way of making the album listenable

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 27 September 2016 17:50 (seven years ago) link

i kinda count summer 16 & 4pm in Calabasas as Views tracks and among the best of this whole batch

'too good' is the definitive drake song imo

nothing about it on paper is objectionable, together/apart duet, muted/nullified demeanour, lovely melody, all classic all adds up... except him, in his purest form, at his nauseating snide hostile manipulative insincere paternalist weasel worst

r|t|c, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 18:35 (seven years ago) link

j0rd otm, this album is totally salvageable just too many songs on it

first album to top a billion streams.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 20:28 (seven years ago) link

It's the first album to top 1 billion streams on Apple Music, other albums have done it on Spotify (Lean On is nearly there on its own)

I know hoes that know Ali Farka Toure (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 20:35 (seven years ago) link

I think the length of the album is a big reason why the album has racked up as many streams as it has--in the new economy, more tracks = more streams.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:17 (seven years ago) link

The string outro on "Feel No Ways" is nice. "Hold On, We're Going Home" still his only timeless song imo.

"nothing about it on paper is objectionable, together/apart duet, muted/nullified demeanour, lovely melody, all classic all adds up... except him, in his purest form, at his nauseating snide hostile manipulative insincere paternalist weasel worst"

I don't get this from "Too Good" at all, it seems pretty genuine.

I guess Drake was unable to reach Young Thug for "Fake Love" and so thought he'd have a go at the chorus himself
