I'm going to amend my comment above.

"A100" greatly increased my anticipation of hearing a Billy Corgan solo record.

Until now. After viewing the cover, I want to punch him in the face.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 22 April 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

what an awful cover.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 22 April 2005 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Hehehe, hilarious. :-) So long as the music's good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 April 2005 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

He really is turning into a rat in a cage.

This sounds exactly like what I'd expect of Billy Corgan, 10 years on from the last good song he wrote. Aimless wash of nasality and over-production, zero impact. Poor guy. I mean, if your job is "musician," you can't really just quit--but he should've tried.

I.M. (I.M.), Friday, 22 April 2005 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's a scoop of sorts:
He's touring as a heavily-electronic three piece with Matt Walker and Brian Liesgang (sp.) from Filter.

M.D. (Mike Dixon), Saturday, 23 April 2005 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Even better! :-) He should just get Bon Harris to join him as well like he did on Adore and then they can challenge Pixies 2005 to a bald-off.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 23 April 2005 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

BC talks about the album song by song. I admit I like the story about R. Smith.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 24 April 2005 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's an interesting Q & A with Billy:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/chi-0504230270apr24,1,3030432.story?coll=chi-nonmmxent-utl&ctrack=1&cset=true

The bit about Pajo made me chuckle.

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Monday, 25 April 2005 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Hehehe. Good stuff. It'll make people hate him even more but I don't care, bring on the album. The fact that Kot brought up "Shame" as a comparison point has me excited beyond belief, as that is hands down one of my all time favorite songs by, well, anyone.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 April 2005 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck. What is that site where you can get a password to read an article but don't have to register?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the silliest album cover I've ever seen. Wow. Psyched for Billy's Kaballah period though! holla!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

“Where’s D’Arcy? Is she okay?”

I find myself wondering the same thing myself, for some reason, often.

LOVE that he’s dishing this dirt. I’ve waited years for this!

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Kot's stuff. He's good. But I also like DeRo's stuff, too. Chicago is lucky to have those two guys.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:19 (twenty-one years ago)

*desperately tries to guess the level of sarcasm*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"Walking Shade" is also great! It's "Adore"-era knob-twiddling + sheets of guitar + Depeche Mode's "A Question of Time". I'm firmly back on the side of anticipation.

Better than "Appels + Oranjes"

BLASPHEMY

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Billy actually have a large red birthmark on his hand and my 11 years of complete SP devotion did not reveal this?

(As i type this i realize why his first band was named The Marked. whoa.)

PB, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

WHAT KIND OF FAN ARE YOU?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Next up, PB realizes, "Hey! Corgan's bald!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm actually really ashamed......i own everything thing they ever did and own stacks of bootleg tapes. When i was in 8th grade i spent $25 apiece on 2 interview discs (yes, the ones that have stickers warning "DOES NOT CONTAIN MUSIC").

Now that i think about it i probably read somewhere that that's where "The Marked" came from, but had no idea the birthmark was that big...

PB, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Next up, PB realizes, "Hey! Corgan's bald!"
-- Ned Raggett (ne...), May 18th, 2005.

Yes, I apologize.

Pathetic.

PB, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you see the making of Adore documentary? When he's doing takes on the "For Martha" vocal, you can see it pretty clearly..

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

This is one of my favorite albums this year so far. And it DOESN'T sound like bland, dreary Machina II crap -- don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"Mina Loy (My Old Heart)" :

http://s51.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2ULDJC6IFCDW937Y71KKIVXNKE

"Now (And Then)" :

http://s51.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0B6H0WE3DDUTE3OIMNGZZD6O2H

Both of them are stellar.. definite Berlin-era Bowie feel, particularly "Now (And Then)" it sort of sounds like "Sense of Doubt." This is shaping up to be excellent.

That's it, no more leaks for me.. I'm going to stick it out for this one.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 19 May 2005 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"Walking Shade" is the only weak one of the 4 that've leaked thus far, and it isn't even really that bad... it's grown on me. "Mina Loy ( My Old Heart)" definitely should've been the single, though.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 19 May 2005 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

no one?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 20 May 2005 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

The whole thing leaked. I'm not downloading it,though, so I can't help you lot with a YSI.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 2 June 2005 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I hadn't read that track-by-track description until just now, so when "To Love Somebody" started playing I was a little shocked to hear it. And not in a good way.

Other than that unfortunate misstep, though, I think it's actually a pretty decent record. And I'm not generally one to give Corgan a pass on anything!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Just caught BC on Letterman.....that wasn't half bad. Good to see the old bald S.O.B. back making some good music.

The visual display behind him on this tour is very nice.

PB, Tuesday, 21 June 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

i still like this album

That One Guy (That One Guy), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 03:38 (twenty years ago)

I like it, but I can't help but be a bit disappointed. It's so... samey. Everything just washes together... and I'm missing the Billy 'epic.' Oh well. Can't wait to see him live next week.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

I lurv me this album. And the Bee Gees cover with one Mr. Smith is extremely godlike.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

So far I really like the Smith collab. yes. Otherwise doesn't even seem as good as Zwan, but that might change...

Liner notes are godawful, I think. I know it's a big deal to show his birthmark to him, but it's not fun to look at.

Richard K (Richard K), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

You must understand, for me this is like the best Projekt album ever (and I am a Projekt fiend).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

A bit like Lycia in particular, a very one note affair but a PERFECT note.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:14 (twenty years ago)

(And I've just realized something else, it is hands down the *shortest* album he's made since Gish. Only 45 minutes!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it does resemble a Projekt album, particularly on the ballads. The comparison breaks down (for me, anyway) on the faster songs, where the guitars lose their shimmer and become a lot noisier (in a good way, obv.).

For me, this is "Adore" done properly -- lots of "Daphne Descends" (huge-sounding songs) and less of "Annie Dog" (soft-rock wihimpering + some electronics).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

this is "Adore" done properly

Hey, I'll not stand for that! It is a variation on the theme of that album, though, v. much so -- the return of Bon Harris makes that clearer.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

Buying it off iTunes as we speak. "Mina Loy" sounds... tremendous. It's what the Joseph Cotten Mix of "Perfect" off Adore would sound like.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

I like "Adore", even if I have issues with it (from last week's thread, two of my SP POX are on "Adore"). Like I said upthread, "TFE" sounds like he's finally given in to all his Depeche Mode fantasies, and is making electronic pop songs with huge amounts of guitar. Whereas "Adore" retained a lot of "Mellon Collie"'s sprawl, like it was trying to be a 77-minute rock epic, but with a few blips and drum machines strewn about.

IMO, "TFE" > "Adore" ... anyone else? (it might be too soon for people to make a judgement one way or the other, but I'll ask the question anyway)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

I tend to unreservedly love every Corgan album equally in whatever guise so I'm not the best person to ask...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 03:10 (twenty years ago)

"Sorrows (In Blue)" and "Pretty Pretty STAR" are really underrated tracks... up there with "Mina Loy (My Old Heart)," "DIA" and "To Love Somebody" as the album's best. All of those tracks are excellent, and the rest are pretty good (though "Walking Shade" is an abomination, and "I'm Ready" I'm not feeling to much), but as a whole.. I dunno... like I said upthread, it just washes together because everything sounds the same: white noise, generic drum beat, synths, angular guitar part, rinse wash repeat. But yeah, this album certainly doesn't deserve the panning it's getting.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha, way to avoid the question Ned, but we've all seen your top 4721948 albums of the 90's so we know that you're not above making lists where you pit Corgan-penned albums against each other :)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

"Walking Shade" is amazing (see my comment way upthread) ... it's one of my favourite tracks of the year!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha, way to avoid the question Ned, but we've all seen your top 4721948 albums of the 90's so we know that you're not above making lists where you pit Corgan-penned albums against each other :)
