knowing the newcleus track beatjacked for celestial annihilation ruins it tho

and what, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

the only thing i remember is the kool g rap song and his verse having a line about the block being hotter than jalapeños.

deej, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

kool g rap joint and the electro joint are the only defensible ones but the rest is pretty good except for the shit that doesnt sound like rap at all

and what, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

what is unkle now?

far as i can tell unkle was:

94-6: skylab
98: shadow
then psychonauts?

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

i only care about the 1 cd

and what, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

I think 94-95 it was mostly Goldsworthy wasn't it. According to discogs it's Richard File (aka DJ Aura) and Lavelle (haha).

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

unkle now is richard file, pretty much. it was also tim sweeney for a while, and major force west.

mh, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

goldsworthy but also kudo and the other guy from major force (and howie b?) -- basically skylab.

rihanna 'umbrella' = rnb 'drums of death'

r|t|c, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

i thought it was

AUDACITY TO BLASPHEME ME

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

same cymbal and everything

r|t|c, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

unkle is in my top 10 from that year, i even like "rabbit in your headlights" and *especially* i like "lonely souls"

the one that i think is really bad is the mike d track.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

uhhh 'drums of death' as in said kool g one obv, not that beasties one

xp

blaspheme me? hmmmm

r|t|c, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah was this the one where u could rewind the cd past 0:00 and hear a mix of all their influences and stuff!!

r|t|c, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

yep -- not doable on itunes but iirc a lot of stuff they couldn't have paid for.

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

NINE POINT EIGHT??!?!

r|t|c, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

I liked the Thom Yorke song from that record, I think.

Jordan, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

Since Lavelle can't play a note of music, most of the actual studio work was left to Shadow the FAMOUS MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST who played every note of the thing.

That one guy that quit, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

EVEN BETTER THAN ARCADE FIRE, FOLKS!!

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

I remember someone in the Wire annihilating "Psyence fiction" on its release - it was one of my fave reviews ever.

-- jed_e_3

remember this too. rob young i think?

r|t|c, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

How dare you all criticize pretty much the most highly regarded music publication on the Internet here.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

"these guys in unkle are the same sort of losers who think sun ra was on drugs" <-- all time WTF remark

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

"Mo' Wax Records founder James Lavelle, on the other hand, is recognized as a real ideas-man with a great head for business." <-- all time #2 WTF remark

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

Actually that entire Pitchfork review is pretty WTF.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

good thread revive

deej, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

BTW : mo'wax r.i.p.

the new UNKLE stuff is on a different label, No Surrender, so i guess this is the final nail in the mo'wax coffin.

anyone heard the new material yet - the 2*7" was in the shops on monday, but very limited and so now gone, though all the tracks are to be on the new album so i wasn't that bothered despite the very nice packaging.

mark e, Thursday, 17 May 2007 08:29 (nineteen years ago)

i think mo'wax has been basically dormant since the 90s -- it became a polygram boutiquey thing maybe?

That one guy that quit, Thursday, 17 May 2007 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, but each UNKLE release from the Never Never Land campaign had the logo hidden away, but the new single didn't, so i think its safe to say, its now a done deal.

mark e, Thursday, 17 May 2007 08:43 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

hey, so uh, i'm interviewing lavelle on assignment. tell me where to start-- i know little about any of this, breaks and trip-hop ain't my deal.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 03:14 (nineteen years ago)

well you could ask him about his approach to remixing the Boredoms, I thought that was a fairly intersting matchup that doesn't get enough love.

Lavelle really opened my eyes some 8 years ago at Apolo Nitsa in Barcelona - taking me with him from Young MC to Incredible Bongo Band to aicd house to thundering techno in the space of 6 hours. I realize that's not so out of the ordinary these days, but at least for me, at that time, it was relevatory.

DJ Logan5, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 03:42 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, he seems to get a lot of hate, but he at least seems to DO a lot of different things, some of which are pretty cool..

the table is the table, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 04:28 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

I heard "Lonely Souls" for the first time by accident (shuffle) yesterday, and despite Ashcroft it's absolutely superb :-/

i mean that second half just killed me :--/

"psyence fiction" > "third"

discus

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 2 January 2009 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

Both have pretty great production, Third has much better vocals and lyrics.

BITCH NIGGA WITH THE AUDACITY TO BLASPHEME ME

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 2 January 2009 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

James Lavelle was pretty upset at being called that.

Neil S, Friday, 2 January 2009 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

i've listened to third maybe ... 50 times this year? or more? and i don't remember any lyrics except the portugese bit about the rule of three.

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 2 January 2009 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

I kind of agree, but Portishead lyrics are helped by not being at least in part written by Mad Rick. I would take Gibbons on Third over any of the vocal performances on Psyence Fiction, personally.

Neil S, Friday, 2 January 2009 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

I have a friend with nearly every Mo'Wax release. Most of what's there is actually worth owning, but it's sad because if you lay them out in a line it makes an arrow that points to Lavelle's ongoing wankery.

missed this at the time. LOL!

i am only at like 75% of the catalogue

the late great, Saturday, 11 July 2015 00:00 (ten years ago)
