Prince's guitar: I'm not sure how virtuosic his guitar playing was in terms of solo technique, I'm sure it was excellent, but what made Prince an amazing guitar player was his ability to coax that pure emotion out of the instrument, and knowing exactly what notes to play, etc.
Prince as a bass player: his strength to me wasn't those amazing melodic fluid basslines that James Jamerson laid down on the regular, but some incredible bass riffs like on Lady Cab Driver and Sign O' The Times. His bass playing and interplay with Sheila E's drums is one of the best things about Lovesexy for me.
As a piano player: I'm a keyboard player and from what I've seen and heard he's a very expressive player with very good technique. He probably did a good amount of his writing on the keys. When he lets loose like on "Strange Relationship" from the Lovesexy tour piano medley he can rock the shit out of the instrument. He's also obviously very capable of playing pretty too, like he did on his version of Joni's "A Case of You"

can't remember for the life of me if it was this thread or the other where the rainbow children was suggested as his worst album. it is very much not. imo it's really good

the dangelo cover only got me when he said prince's name. other than that, it was nice, respectful, but bruce's PR cover packed more emotion for me. dangelo obv felt emotion *himself*, but i didnt feel it much. plus, every time i see him these days, i wonder whats going on with his hair, and then i wondered why he was wearing that white fur thing as whats good for prince isnt necesarily a good fit for dangelo. im being petty i know (though prince was pretty good at pettiness so im sure he would approve).
the rainbow children was insanely good apart from the song the work, which was another one of his slightly sterile JB tributes.
― StillAdvance, Wednesday, 27 April 2016 19:09 (ten years ago)
lol the Work is the only song on there I liked

I was thinking about his worst projects again, and I think, contrary to popular Prince fan opinion, that the Madhouse albums are pretty poor. Prince's jazz-funk isnt particularly strong IMO, even if it does have some good moments/riffs/licks/melodies here and there. I think fans just like to think Prince could do anything, but as NEWS made pretty clear, hes good at being jazzy, but actual jazz? Nah. I dont hear it. Like, hearing Miles play live with him at that NYE show is fantastic. Hearing a song between them? I dunno how good it would be.
― StillAdvance, Wednesday, 27 April 2016 19:51 (ten years ago)
I agree w that, altho I'm having a hard time putting my finger on what it is exactly about jazz that Prince doesn't get.
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 27 April 2016 20:16 (ten years ago)
Looseness. Swing. Think about how much time he spent working with drum machines. A drummer like Tony Williams would have totally wrong-footed him.
― Don Van Gorp, midwest regional VP, marketing (誤訳侮辱), Wednesday, 27 April 2016 20:19 (ten years ago)
Prince didn't get that it's best not to approach it as "jazz."
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 27 April 2016 20:19 (ten years ago)
"Looseness. Swing. Think about how much time he spent working with drum machines. A drummer like Tony Williams would have totally wrong-footed him."
true, but even NEWS, some decades after madhouse, and several years playing off drummers, wasnt too hot either.

FYI someone on facebook calling themselves His Royal Highness is sharing the most insane collection of bootleg videos and such. shit like 90 minutes of 'out-takes' from the the recording of the Sign O The Times film. he must be 'connected'.

The band who opened for D'Angelo at First Ave with St. Paul Peterson, Eric Leeds, etc. was not that good. Great players of course, but without someone like Prince to direct and frame things it was just jams. The only interesting part was watching Questlove try to keep things in check while the other drummer overplayed.
― sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 April 2016 20:34 (ten years ago)
Loved the New Yorker postscript. I've got to admit, I'd never even considered Prince's iconography or pictograph lexicon as avant garde, but of course they were.
