that DVD is Europe-only

The Amazon search term you're looking for is "region-free DVD player." They are surprisingly cheap.

oh lord.

At least that hopefully means there's nothing to stop a flood of vault releases...

Someone's on the phone to the Hendrix estate right now: "so there's a market for purple liqueurs, you say?"

That's really startling to me given that he had charitable corporations going, I would think he'd have thought of that at least

scarcity festival (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 17:08 (ten years ago)

Also the team of female black lawyers. Wouldn't they have suggested something?

how's life, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 17:10 (ten years ago)

Prince, always one to welcome suggestions

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 17:14 (ten years ago)

There's just no way this is good news. I hope a document turns up.

scarcity festival (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 17:15 (ten years ago)

yeah this is terrible

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 17:21 (ten years ago)

no will /is/ startling. prince seems like he had the broad outlines of his business stuff pretty together.

also both shocking and non-shocking that the estate is valued at "only" 27 million. on the one hand, prince is one of the best-selling artists of all time, and he probably sold $27 million worth of records in any given six months between 1984 and 1994. on the other hand, i imagine the royalties were thinner in recent years, not only b/c of general decline in album sales, but also because a fair amount of his work in the 21st century was really poorly distributed. also, unlike some other stars whose sales had declined, prince kept a full staff at paisley park. that couldn't have been cheap. and if you believe the tabloids, he had an expensive prescription-drug habit.

wizzz! (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 17:33 (ten years ago)

i'm sure that like most aging superstars he made way more money touring than album sales -- his willingness to 'give away' his albums in various formats suggested as much. (in fact prince seemed to recognize or anticipate this dynamic even before the bottom fell out of the record industry).

wizzz! (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 17:35 (ten years ago)

That article says $27 in property. I don't know if they mean that literally or not, but I can imagine he has a lot more money than that.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 17:36 (ten years ago)

I was assuming that was primarily real estate.

how's life, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 17:42 (ten years ago)

makes much more sense

the 'major tom guy' (sleeve), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 17:46 (ten years ago)

There are worse states to die intestate in than Minnesota -- legally, it'll be complicated because he had a bunch of siblings, but the law is fairly clear generally.

Three Word Username, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 17:46 (ten years ago)

I wouldn't expect his finances to be anything more than a mess - he obviously spent money as fast as he made it, and the royalties from his biggest stuff probably diminished over time given his relationship w WB and their shitty handling of his catalog. I'm sure he *owned* a bunch of crazy stuff (not the least of which is the rights to everything in his vault), plus real estate, who knows what else.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 17:50 (ten years ago)

Also the team of female black lawyers. Wouldn't they have suggested something?

too busy stopping transgressions iirc

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 17:51 (ten years ago)

TMZ estimates his estate is valued between 100 and 150 mil. and yeah, his opiate and speed addiction was a huge shocker to me.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 17:56 (ten years ago)

Are those reports based on anything yet besides the interview with the drug dealer guy?

scarcity festival (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 18:10 (ten years ago)

Xpost

scarcity festival (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 18:10 (ten years ago)

Yeah, I'm not going to believe any tmz-style shocking addiction stories

I did read one interview (maybe it was the Sheila E one?) where it was mentioned he had chronic pain issues and I'd imagine he had the same issues with the medical establishment's treatment of chronic pain that many people do, combined with his insistence on continuing to do very physically demanding stage shows.

I forgot or didn't know he had a hip replacement some time ago.

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 18:31 (ten years ago)

most ridiculous gossip story being that people saw him at a local walgreens store multiple times in the last few months

come on, some people just really like going to walgreens and buying stuff there! pretty sure i know some coworkers guilty of that one

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 18:32 (ten years ago)

maybe he was just buying some iced tea.

wizzz! (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 18:34 (ten years ago)

i often go to walgreens to buy gum and iced tea.

wizzz! (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 18:34 (ten years ago)

TMZ is not to be dismissed so quickly. They're much more reliable than the National Enquirer or any other grocery store tabloid. They have an incredible infrastructure. Great piece on TMZ in the New Yorker from February: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/02/22/inside-harvey-levins-tmz

Having said that, the 'Doctor D' interview appeared in the Daily Mail, so take it with a grain of salt...

xps walgreens: it wasn't a few times multiple times in the last few months, but four times in the same day. this is all post plane overdose.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 18:37 (ten years ago)

sorry, didn't mean to turn this into a "credibility of tabloids" thing

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 18:39 (ten years ago)

and your credible tabloid said "week" not "day" so ffs

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 18:42 (ten years ago)

I note that the Kingdom Hall where Prince went is about five blocks away from my mother's house (we did get a lot of doorbell ringing in my neighbourhood, but never Prince himself, my mom spent about five years as a JW when she was a kid and would have relished the chance to invite him in and argue).

jedi slimane (suzy), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 18:51 (ten years ago)

It's almost like we could just wait for the autopsy reports instead of listening to various tabloids, many of which also rolled out the long time HIV rumors within hours

Here, let me Danesplain that for you (jjjusten), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 18:51 (ten years ago)

This is all so sad.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 19:24 (ten years ago)

I'm gonna have to read that new yorker article because I've been hearing everybody fron ilx to my boss at work telling me "tmz actually gets things right a lot of the time" but every time I read about them, it's because they were on some fact-distorting bullshit. Who knows maybe I'm wrong.

how's life, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 19:57 (ten years ago)

it's hard to get things wrong when you say "person X who is Y told us Z" and then state further down "other source A said B, which contradicts the former sentence, and person X said that in 1909 so we might be wrong idk"

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 20:01 (ten years ago)

the last 5 or so after shows and secret shows i went to were cash only so i imagine he has a scrooge mcduck style room full of bills somewhere.

Learned the other day that P payed $70 - 80,000 for Clyde Stubblefield's cancer treatments a few years back, but kept it quiet (for JW reasons I guess?).

we had a client meeting out in chanhassan today and my coworkers ended up driving past paisley park & they figured there was still 100-200 ppl out there, and it's kinda overcast and intermittently sprinkling today

rockpalast '82 (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 20:29 (ten years ago)

I've read about a few charitable organizations he apparently had a lot larger role in than previously publicized. A lot of people keep a low profile with that, but the JW restriction made things even more under the radar.

more details:

The probate court has not identified an executor, and estimates of Prince’s net worth and of the value of his estate have varied widely. Forbes magazine last estimated his earnings in 2005, when it said that he made $49.7 million before taxes that year.

But Prince’s worth could be much greater now, particularly since two years ago he took control of his valuable publishing catalog — the copyrights for songwriting — and negotiated a favorable new deal with Warner Bros., his former record company. Since his death, Prince has sold at least 650,000 albums and 2.8 million tracks in the United States, according to Nielsen.

Beyond his music, Prince, who was born Prince Rogers Nelson, owned extensive property in the Minneapolis area. Its value is unclear, but Paisley Park, his studio complex in the suburb of Chanhassen, Minn., has been assessed at over $7 million, according to Carver County public records.
