Wolf Alice

This is my favorite rock album in awhile.

i had no idea. until the other day.

Really pissed off that I missed out on them last year. They're touring America now, but the only tour stop local to me is at a festival that I can't afford tickets to.

They're opening for the 1975 who are apparently playing arenas. How the hell is that happening? Same thing with Alt J, who sold out Madison Square Garden.

i even love their cover of wicked game.

sounds so cool. they make it the guitar anthem it was meant to be.

played all the videos last night on the PS4 for rufus and maria and now maria says SHE'S the number one wolf alice fan in the house and she's following them on twitter.

I don't really get the love for this, it felt stodgy and uninspired, except for the bits that weren't, which were brilliant. Shame there weren't that many of them. I fully expect them to make an amazing second or third album.

I listened to the album again, inspired by this thread revival, and I still find it hard to get through it. But I still love individual songs and performances, especially some of the live ones. I am hopeful about their next album. I still tend to prefer their rocking material to their more pop-oriented stuff, though, so that could be a problem, if they really intend to head more toward pop.

I suspect its their live shows that is really building their momentum at this point.

Really? I think the album's amazing. It feels like a living thing.

What would you consider their pop-oriented material other than Freazy? Everything other than that is rock, yes? And last I heard, they weren't even playing Freazy live because they just didn't know what to do with it.

Just checked that last statement and I guess they have played it live, but I thought I read an interview with them where they admitted to not being comfortable with how it fit into their sets.

"Bros" is poppy. Reminds me of The Sundays.

I like some of the non-rock songs on the album, but a lot of them feel like filler and are difficult for me to make it through. "Freazy" is one of the better ones. I also like "Turn to Dust" (though I'm always a little ambivalent about her mannered delivery there). "Bros" is okay. A little too much like the Sundays. I wish I had a copy of the earlier version Johnny Fever keeps mentioning, since I liked it better though I don't remember exactly what it sounded like at this point. I don't really like the low-energy vocals on most of "Your Loves Whore."

Songs that really lose me: "Lisbon" (and wait, this one is pretty rock), "Silk" (I just realized part of this reminds me of MIA) although I feel like there are various pieces here I could like if they were rearranged, "Swallowtail" (this is what happens when you give someone else a chance to sing), "Soapy Water," and "The Wonderwhy."

I was just listening to part of that Thursday night. Some good stuff, but the songs I found draggy on the album I still find draggy. Didn't get as far as Giant Peach, so I might return to it.

the only new rock band i like really. or listen to. well, maybe savages too. but that is kinda linked to my worship of their singer.

although rufus is slowly but surely making me a car seat headrest fan...

can't face hearing this in case it's crap.

also listening to this album this morning and thinking about how rich and varied the arrangements are and how sharp the songwriting is!!! and also that this shift toward the baroque was really thoroughly telegraphed by “the last man on earth”

Number One

Saw them live last night and they were pretty excellent. They put on an exceedingly tight show now and the new songs sounded great live.

The one two of Yuk Foo/Play The Greatest Hits was possibly the highlight, with Ellie strutting around singing (shouting) into a megaphone.

£8.50 a pint at the venue can do one though

think two of my mates were there. gutted I missed it!

Late to the party but count me as a fan of the old stuff and the evolution. There’s some Queen in the arrangements on some of these songs, and while the vocals are nothing alike, Ellie’s magnetism/dynamism is another connection. I love how she slips in and out of screaming and falsetto across a few tunes. She’s a better singer than I gave her credit for previously.

Wolf Alice will be opening for Olivia Rodrigo on the first leg of her U.S. fall tour.

I've long dreamed about seeing WA in an arena, and this would be a great chance, but not sure if tickets will be swingable for me at the moment. Nonetheless, they stand to gain a lot of new U.S. fans!
