akm, Thursday, 7 April 2016 18:15 (eight years ago) link

sounds great, happy it seems to be going for a different vibe than Stadows (which was great, but I'm always curious to hear something new)

some interesting recent additions to Tidal's Dylan catalogue:

wait, do you mean that lovin' bob album isn't an approved release?!?!

wizzz! (amateurist), Monday, 11 April 2016 01:58 (eight years ago) link

Wow, that voice is a strange blend of his 70s narrative singing and his desiccated, spectral 21st century tones. He must have rested up from touring before the sessions.

damn first time i've wanted a tidal account

i saw speculation somewhere that he kicked smoking between tempest and shadows, it's the only reasonable explanation for his voice suddenly improving after so many years of declining

maybe bob just vapes now

tylerw, Monday, 11 April 2016 19:36 (eight years ago) link

and speaking of speculation, rumors are-a-flying that his recent studio sessions were for an entirely different album made up of "mostly original contemporary songs"

two weeks pass...

So, I turned on the radio last night, heard what I sure thought might be an advance track from Fallen Angels---turned ot it was by Freddie Cole, brother of Nat. Will have to check more of his stuff.

the first time he quit smoking:

WENNER: I’m sure you read the reviews of “Nashville Skyline.” Everybody remarks on the change of your singing style...

DYLAN: Well Jann, I’ll tell you something. There’s not too much of a change in my singing style, but I’ll tell you something which is true... I stopped smoking. When I stopped smoking, my voice changed... so drastically, I couldn’t believe it myself. That’s true. I tell you, you stop smoking those cigarettes (laughter)... and you’ll be able to sing like Caruso.

i love that interview. they should do a sequel so dylan can troll jann some more.

tylerw, Wednesday, 27 April 2016 15:04 (eight years ago) link

i sort of hope this is going to be like good as i've been to you/world gone wrong, where 2 covers albums serve as the jumping off point for a new era for dylan...as much as i've loved the post love & theft era, i think it's been great, i felt on tempest it was starting to tire, esp. the bluesier numbers where they would literally just ride on riff & a turnaround for like 5 minutes (which works for lungfish but hey)

rockpalast '82 (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 28 April 2016 14:42 (eight years ago) link

yeah, i like tempest, but there is definitely a kinda reined in feeling instrumentally ... i think one of the songs might even be a loop? can't remember.
will be interesting to see if he has any new tricks up his sleeve. not even sure what i'd like him to do. maybe something with his piano to the fore? he plays it so much live these days.

tylerw, Thursday, 28 April 2016 14:49 (eight years ago) link

just something that has a little more movement in terms of chord changes and melody, like a good example might be "workingman's blues #2" off modern times, i think he could sing this song better now

The last two tracks aside, think most of Tempest aims to prove he ain't mellow, and succeeds---"So much," he sneers, "for the wasted years." Still growlin' at his old lady, though maybe there's been enough offstage "answer songs" that he figured shifting to classy covers was the better part of valor, for a while. But he's still the old soldier of love and theft, slogging through the moonlight. But yeah, hope this portends at least a stylistic shift in forthcoming albums of originals, like the country blues collections did, good call.

album seems to be generating next to no interest... can't say I've heard it more than twice myself, which is the first Dylan alb released on my watch that's happened to... I'll get around to it eventually, concerts sound nice

I can't get excited about this.
