part of the reason i prefer barter 6 over anything else he's put out

marcos, Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:56 (eight years ago) link

These new records are good of course because he's good, but I can't envision any of them making it up my list of favorites

tour > b6 > ss3 > 1017 > ss1/2

de l'asshole (flopson), Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:57 (eight years ago) link

so many classic moments on ss3. i've had it on repeat all morning

de l'asshole (flopson), Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:58 (eight years ago) link

i should probably listen to the thing

marcos, Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:58 (eight years ago) link

Oh yeah I wasn't ranking rich gang or any earlier thug tapes

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:59 (eight years ago) link

what does 'i like replayable thug' mean? you're saying you like young thugs songs you like?

i find ss3 very replayable and very complex and compositional.

Jacques_Lamure, Thursday, 31 March 2016 16:04 (eight years ago) link

what does 'replayable' mean for a record that's 6 days old

some dude, Thursday, 31 March 2016 16:28 (eight years ago) link

means that on the seventh day, it rests

ulysses, Thursday, 31 March 2016 16:30 (eight years ago) link

Lol who is he kidding none of these are going up billboard

"Digits" and "With Them" on the Hot 100 this week! obviously they'd need to catch on at radio to stay there though.

"Robots are sexy as shit" - Big Sean (some dude), Wednesday, 6 April 2016 03:19 (eight years ago) link

that's kind of my depressing wake-up call after jumping into satellite radio -- there are stations where you hear new rap music, but it's not a deep rotation so you still get a really weak cross-section of new music

not enough thugger, come on

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 6 April 2016 03:34 (eight years ago) link

yeah...i imagine he gets more songs on the air in the deep south but where i live "Best Friend" is the only thing from these 5 solo projects over the past year that i've heard on the radio.

"Robots are sexy as shit" - Big Sean (some dude), Wednesday, 6 April 2016 03:48 (eight years ago) link

"good times" the only thug i've ever heard on boston radio

marcos, Wednesday, 6 April 2016 14:23 (eight years ago) link

but i've heard "big pimpin" like 200 times this week, boston hip hop stations are boring as fuck

marcos, Wednesday, 6 April 2016 14:24 (eight years ago) link

sirius xm's hip hop station plays this new plies track more

wtf

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 6 April 2016 14:26 (eight years ago) link

I heard Digits on Hot 97, but it was during a mix show. Mix shows are usually a bit more daring in their programming than the normal playlist.

i like thug songs which aim for a more seductive approach than an erm aggro one. I don't think hes as good at SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM as he is intrigue. idk this is a cursory explanation of what I mean, but "Would Wood" > "Quarterback" off ss1

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 7 April 2016 03:27 (eight years ago) link

Deej, were you a fan of 1017 Thug? Aggro was practically his default mode back then. I feel like most of those more seductive tracks didn't make it into Thug's repertoire until at least the Rich Gang mixtape.

thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Thursday, 7 April 2016 03:38 (eight years ago) link

i liked parts of it a lot, but obviously he made huge strides in the 12 months after & his later stuff makes it feel prehistoric

i reviewed 'came from nothing 3' and found that to be even MORE abrasive—"foreign" aside, he seemed to be avoiding hooks to figure out a new grammar, '1017 thug' was when he started to come back inside

i think songwriting in the broadest sense is also a part of the 'seduction' trick....like he's a great songwriter but sometimes he just raps over beats, and i prefer the former to the latter

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 7 April 2016 03:46 (eight years ago) link

I agree with that last point a lot, that's why the final three songs are probably my favorite on Barter 6. I do think that Slime Season 3 has some of those moments. "Digits" is pretty good example of Thug's best songwriting instincts--there's like five distinct great melodies on that one. Reminds me a bit of Stoner in the sense that it works as both a pile of hooks and a cohesive song.

http://www.stereogum.com/1871432/young-thugs-label-head-does-not-understand-young-thug/video/

These takes are sort of infuriating to me. Lyor Cohen didn't tell Thug that he should stop recording in the way that he does, just that if he wants to have 10 number one singles maybe he should work on crafting his choruses. Pretty impressive how fader, stereogum etc managed to take even less context from a one minute clip from an hour long show

Stop the presses, a record label guy wants hits

thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Friday, 15 April 2016 15:43 (eight years ago) link

everyone is kind of waiting for him to write another song that screams hit

i agree w/ u & lyor

J0rdan S., Friday, 15 April 2016 15:49 (eight years ago) link

make more radio hits, less "listen to and vibe" music I guess is the message

μpright mammal (mh), Friday, 15 April 2016 15:52 (eight years ago) link

Bankroll Mafia (T.I., Thug, Shad Da God, some other jamokes) album was better than I expected. "Neg 4 Degrees" is prime Thugger.

So is HiTunes ever coming out

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Friday, 20 May 2016 00:01 (eight years ago) link

i feel like 300 wants to build up to that album with the perfect song hitting at the perfect moment but they have no idea what they're actually looking for. he's big enough that they could probably just announce a release date a month away, put any reasonably catchy song out as the lead single, and do great, but they're gonna keep spraying out mixtapelets and delaying the 'real album' for at least another 6 months.

a goon shaped tool (some dude), Friday, 20 May 2016 01:39 (eight years ago) link

he's been recorded expressing his aversion to catering to a bit hit so im not really optimistic either

J0rdan S., Friday, 20 May 2016 02:06 (eight years ago) link

i feel like Kevin Gates's career should be studied by other rappers looking to make that mixtapes-to-album transition, they just kept the music coming really steadily and then built up to the album so that there was a demand for it. so much better than the erratic way Gucci/Thug/Migos kind of steamroll over one project to get to the next one.

a goon shaped tool (some dude), Friday, 20 May 2016 02:26 (eight years ago) link

You'd think with Lyor Cohen involved, they would know better but wasn't there a thing awhile ago about how he actually has no idea these days (I didn't bother reading it tbh but wasn't that the gist)

the thing is that gates was almost entirely ignored by the music press up until he released islah so he could build up slowly in relative obscurity whereas migos & thug got magazine covers and stuff before they even released albums. i think in that same discussion w/ lyor cohen thug says "but the critics love it" or something regarding his music. (also it took gates years to get a hot 100 hit whereas with migos it happened instantaneously & thug after a few years and i think once that happened labels can't stop themselves from meddling.)

J0rdan S., Friday, 20 May 2016 13:51 (eight years ago) link

i'm pretty bewildered by Gates' success... he seemed to have fallen off the map pre-Islah. i kinda suspect it was just the high quality of the music that gave him the boost

de l'asshole (flopson), Friday, 20 May 2016 14:08 (eight years ago) link

do you think gates getting ignored by the music press is to do with image or the fact that he didn't have that one huge hit?

i think gates has more feel for how to craft a body of work while the others don't seem to put any thought into what makes an album work as an album aside from "lots of songs, in one package"

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 20 May 2016 14:12 (eight years ago) link

well gates isn't an aesthete and isn't from a city you can write a trend piece about. his mixtapes got steadily reviewed & stuff so there are rappers who have even stronger claims of having their music fall on deaf ears but just making good, regular street music doesn't exactly catch the attention of editors these days. you don't see gates pop up in the studio w/ kanye next to lil yachty or get remixed by drake or played by kylie jenner on snapchat. it's just not tastemaker music and right now that's where everyone's focus is.

J0rdan S., Friday, 20 May 2016 14:29 (eight years ago) link

the priorities of the music press just are out of wack, which isn't necessarily an indictment of the individuals w/in as much as general market factors or whatever. but the fact that like you could pitch a story about lil boosie's discography while he was in prison but prob couldn't land a piece about his output since isn't a good thing.

J0rdan S., Friday, 20 May 2016 14:33 (eight years ago) link

gates success is in part based on him touring a lot

ANU (sisilafami), Friday, 20 May 2016 16:14 (eight years ago) link

lol, unless there's a proper hit soon we'll have to deal with those pieces for a few more years i'm afraid.
