eight months pass...

Christmas album is nice!

Number None, Thursday, 15 December 2016 00:27 (nine years ago)

ok, having listened to the whole thing there's a fair amount of silliness on there. "Present Without a Bow" is lovely though.

saw her open for Willie Nelson on Saturday. Her band is great, most of the material was great, and then there were a couple groaners (wtf is that "mind Your Own Biscuits/and live will be gravy" song ugh). She did "Rhinestone Cowboy" as a tribute to Glenn, which was cool. Also laughed when she said where she was from, a bunch of people hooted/clapped, and then she responded "I dunno what you're clapping for, that place sucks shit"

cover of CEe-Lo/Dangermouse's "Crazy" was really uncalled for

(wtf is that "mind Your Own Biscuits/and live will be gravy" song ugh).

The lead single from her last regular album.

it wasn't a good album

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 21 August 2017 17:20 (eight years ago)

yeah I didn't hear a lot of new stuff that grabbed me, apart from this one that had a fairly extended spacey instrumental intro. Pedal steel guitarist really does a lot of heavy lifting melodically, at least live.

Οὖτις, Monday, 21 August 2017 17:22 (eight years ago)

IIRC, I read somewhere that outside of a few numbers she didn't really get to sit and write much new stuff for Pageant Material, so many of the songs on it were unrecorded ST,DP leftovers.

both biscuits and pageant material are awesome

J0rdan S., Monday, 21 August 2017 17:57 (eight years ago)

Yeah. Beautiful production too

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:17 (eight years ago)

pageant material was not as good at stdp obviously but still better than i thought it would be. however "biscuits" is still horrendous and there are a couple others on the album that are close.

dyl, Monday, 21 August 2017 20:41 (eight years ago)

I didn't even know she released a Christmas album until recently.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 21 August 2017 20:54 (eight years ago)

she played some new tracks (saw her open for Willie on Thursday at the Shrine) that were outstanding. they sounded a bit more like Ashley Monroe, particularly her more midtempo Fleetwood Mac-ish work on The Blade.

nomar, Monday, 21 August 2017 20:59 (eight years ago)

It was a treat to see her serenading alongside Kristofferson in a medley at the end of the show.

nomar, Monday, 21 August 2017 21:00 (eight years ago)

looking fwd to her new album even tho i wasn't as into the last one. I mean, pageant material is good but in the way that also feels kind of like a retread. anthony hamilton was an artist who everyone i know who's heard him likes one album from—whichever one they hear first. Im hopeful shes not like that

http://ew.com/music/2017/12/12/kacey-musgraves-golden-hour-new-album-interview/

For the upcoming Golden Hour, due in early 2018, following her heart meant trying out new styles as well as writing some of the most honest and genuine tunes of her career. Though she once expressed interest in making a reggae or surf-rock album next, Musgraves describes her new LP as having a “trippy” twist, citing the Bee Gees, Sade, and Neil Young as influences. And while she’s often celebrated for her clever wordplay and witty turns of phrase about small-town life, Musgraves says she avoided wrapping every lyric “up in a little bow” in favor of more direct, reflective songwriting.

Between the above and Little Big Town's "Lost In California", has the era of hillbilly Sade finally arrived?

Damn, Alf wasn't kidding: http://www.punchland.com/?post_type=post&p=89081

Part of that new approach was inspired by country star Kacey Musgraves, apparently. “I went with Ariel to see Kacey Musgraves at the Greek Theater in LA [in September 2016],” he says. “The thing I loved about it was it wasn’t too loud — I’m definitely becoming a cranky old man — so I could really hear every word. The music was really clear and her voice was really clear. I’m the type of person who has spent hours poring over the avant-garde poetic lyrics of certain songwriters, and there was something that felt so good [about how] from the first verse, you knew who was singing, who they were singing to, what kind of situation they were in. After the show I realized there’s not a ton of Vampire Weekend songs where you could listen to the first verse and immediately answer the question of who’s singing and who are they singing to.”

Kacey's remarks make it sound like there's a great album in the making!

...some of y'all too woke to function (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 23 February 2018 05:40 (eight years ago)

damn "space cowboy" is good

J0rdan S., Friday, 23 February 2018 06:40 (eight years ago)

yup

Butterflies is nice, too...though I can't figure out if I've heard it somehow or if it's just very 'Kacey Musgraves song'

alpine static, Friday, 23 February 2018 06:52 (eight years ago)

very promising! when was Space Cowboy released?

niels, Friday, 23 February 2018 07:20 (eight years ago)

"space cowboy" in particular is beautifully arranged

dyl, Friday, 23 February 2018 15:43 (eight years ago)

i'm not really sold on "butterflies" but whatever

J0rdan S., Friday, 23 February 2018 17:35 (eight years ago)

Space Cowboy is terrific. Pageant Material didn't stick with me that much so I have hopes for this one.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 24 February 2018 01:46 (eight years ago)

same

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 24 February 2018 01:51 (eight years ago)

there's parts of "butterflies" that sound like 'redbone" and it trips me out

J0rdan S., Saturday, 24 February 2018 23:08 (eight years ago)

Love the vocal delivery on “til you bought me out of my chrysalis”. Maybe part of how nice it sounds lies in it being a word you don’t normally hear in a pop song, eg ITS CENTRIFUGAL MOTION.

New songs are really promising, can’t wait for the album.

triggercut, Sunday, 25 February 2018 03:10 (eight years ago)

“space cowboy” is gorrrrgeous

k3vin k., Sunday, 25 February 2018 03:56 (eight years ago)

yep. also it made me revisit sarah buxton's "space" which is still great too.

Heez, Sunday, 25 February 2018 04:10 (eight years ago)

velvet elvis sounds great

J0rdan S., Sunday, 25 February 2018 08:52 (eight years ago)

First two songs are excellent and showcase everything I love about her - clever, playful, and imaginative, and man can she write a hook. Her melodies have always stood out.

Worth noting that her supporting cast has changed a lot. Every song on the first two albums (with the exception of the Willie Nelson cover) were cowritten and produced by some combination of Josh Osborne, Shane McAnally, Luke Laird, Brandy Clark, and/or Natalie Hemby. And there were a lot of other talented people in the room - Misa Arriaga (who seems to have split with her romantically & professionally), Charlie Worsham, Kree Harrison...

From what I can tell she's mostly collaborating with a new team, and a lot of her band has changed.

Interestingly, both of the two lead singles (and Velvet Elvis) were cowritten with the McAnally/Laird/Hemby, so I'm interested to see if the rest of the album holds up.

I don't care for "Butterflies" but holy christ "Space Cowboy" is a great tune

Simon H., Tuesday, 6 March 2018 20:40 (eight years ago)

space cowboy is a great track

i usually listen to albums on spotify before buying them but this one is not on there yet

F# A# (∞), Tuesday, 6 March 2018 20:50 (eight years ago)

Album's out March 30th.

Simon H., Tuesday, 6 March 2018 20:52 (eight years ago)

I'm mildly anticipating it. I liked the debut, but she's the least interesting singer and writer of the Miranda Lambert Pack; certainly she's the pick for those who think Lambert, Ashley Monroe, Brandy Clark, etc are too country.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 6 March 2018 20:54 (eight years ago)

what's the miranda lambert pack and why would I find something too country?

STDP is all time

niels, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 21:18 (eight years ago)

i wasn't gonna go there but i don't find brandy clark particularly too country, she has a very dance-y/pop hits sound

F# A# (∞), Tuesday, 6 March 2018 21:24 (eight years ago)

Yeah KM is also the pick for those for who love country music but whose tastes run more to KM than Miranda Lambert or whoever - that's just the way taste runs. If Kacey also appeals to people who aren't that interested in country, that's cool with me.

Tim, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 21:59 (eight years ago)

I think Kacey is pretty country, at least as much as Monroe/Lambert/etc., all of whom have been pushing at the boundaries of pop and rock in imo more aggressive ways than the more chill Musgraves.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 22:01 (eight years ago)

I think so too - tbf Alfred didn't say she wasn't, Alfred said KM was the pick for people who found Brandy Clark and so on too country - I am guessing Alfred knows or reads such people and isn't strawmanning on some authenticity-is-better kick, because that's not really his game AFAICT.

Tim, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 22:07 (eight years ago)

Authenticity? Moi? I'm wearing Target boat shoes.
