just saw her in Bmore and it was soooooo great omg

very happy to see her again last week although the show was less intense than the NYC one last fall (crowd was a bit dud). CRJ's two new songs are OK (she did one of them live) but I'm growing tired of the 80s production esthetic. I really wonder which direction she'll be taking for her next album already.

Here's a little podcast interview thing with her describing the evolution of "When I Needed You", with demo fragments and both her and Ariel Rechtshaid describing how they nailed the John Hughes movie vibe without it collapsing under its own 80s influence. FWIW this was my favorite song of 2015 on our EOY ILM poll ballot, so it's especially gratifying to hear components like the burbling synth arpeggios and the funk bass and the drum avalanche isolated into discrete morsels of crack.

This is great. Super-infectious and not at all affectless like a lot of PC Music aspires to be. I definitely rate Danny L Harle as the best of those producers.

it was kinda seismic? I had listened to the album before and nothing. then it showed up on my 2015 listening list (finally digging into "c", lol) and it was on the third full playthrough that songs came out in full color and specific moments popped: "i am feeling ten feet TEN FEET TALL" / the corny run away with me synth sax / the minor key turn on the chorus of gimme love / funk bass on boy problems / the adrenaline jolt on making the most of the night / "ev-ry-thing-you-ev-er-wan-ted...NOW IT'S HAPPENING"

oh god Black Heart is such a jam and so is the sparkly synth during the chorus of When I Needed You

It’s half that, and it’s half I don’t know how! I was working with Carly Rae Jepsen again last week, and I love working with her because we can’t do what each other do. She’s such a pro.

Yeah it sucks. Not even a good tune

it's the same problem all his stuff has where there's maybe an ok melody but the backing is deliberately so awkward rhythmically it completely ruins it
