But what is (or was, I guess) Johnson's range these days? Can he even get anywhere near the high notes in "Back In Black"? A younger singer might be able to deliver where Johnson couldn't.
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, March 7, 2016 8:38 PM Bookmark Flag Post Permalink
that's the thing, Johnson has sounded like garbage for several decades, really. live versions of Back in Black have sounded terrible since I was in Elementary school
― Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 04:09 (ten years ago)
Eh, the two times I saw them on the "Stiff Upper Lip" (or maybe "Ballbreaker?" Or both?) tour they and he sounded fine.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 04:25 (ten years ago)

this doesn't really "sound fine" to me - i mean, he's mostly hitting the right notes, but there's not a lot of power behind them, he's slurring his words a lot too compared to how he sounded in his prime. esp when compared with this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQywr-PBR_o
and 15 years ago. from his last tour, he sounds godawful - and it's in a lower key now too. he has no power anymore

Checking out the earlier two I fell in love again with the flat slam of Mal's rhythm playing. But really, with Brian, Phil and most importantly Mal gone, it's time to hang it up.
― MatthewK, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 11:57 (ten years ago)
Oh, I agree there's no power to his vox. But it's not like he's hitting bum shrieks or whatever. And I know I was listening critically back in 2001 or whenever, just don't think it mattered. Haven't seen them since, though, and yeah, it's been a while. I don't know what singer gets better as he reaches his 70s. Springsteen is about as good as they get in terms of powerhouse vocals in old age, and he's singing in different registers/keys, too, with less power, etc. And you know he's been taking better care of himself.

How is the Highway to Hell 33 1/3 book?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 12:57 (ten years ago)
I saw them on the Ballbreaker tour, and he did sound fine, but also changed some melodies around slightly to avoid the highest notes ("Back in Black" most obviously). He wasn't super powerful, but he was by no means tired or struggling.
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 18:08 (ten years ago)
I saw them in 2008 (twice!) and he sounded as good as I expected the singer for AC/DC, whose voice sounds like sheets of plate glass being fed into a tree shredder at the best of times, to sound.
― the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 18:29 (ten years ago)
I'm honestly trying to think of a way that AC/DC could feasibly carry on in this situation, and I really can't think of one. What else could Angus possibly do, though? Solo work or moonlighting on other peoples records? Guesting on other classic rock acts live performances? Joining the fucking Foo Fighters?

Short term, for this ongoing tour, there must be at least a couple of ac/dc tribute/cover band singers who could join the real band and not suck at all. Didn't this happen before with some other band? (not Foreigner, though, which was the name that first came to mind)
― StanM, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 22:51 (ten years ago)
In the third video above from Neanderthal, the still/thumbnail image looks like Angus is wearing a Michael Myers mask.
― lingereffect (Kent Burt), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 23:01 (ten years ago)
Judas Priest is the most famous example, and I think Journey's current singer is from a tribute band.

I.e. a William Shatner mask? xpost

Journey, that was who I meant! Thx!

It'd be pretty hilarious if they turned into Yes, who, let's not forget, currently contain not a single fucking original member!

Breuer said that Johnson even received a second opinion and was told his hearing damage wasn’t as bad as he was initially led to believe. “Then he’s like, ‘You know what? I would really like to finish and do some shows. I think we can knock this out.'” However, as Breuer went on to reveal, “Then all his luggage that he toured with showed up at his driveway. There’s been no calls. No, ‘How’s your hearing? How’s your health? What’s going on?’ Boom. Here’s your shit, nice to know you.'”

I know, right? Supposedly, Johnson and Breuer are friends, and Breuer spilled all that on his podcast.

Ha ha, that is never gonna happen. AC/DC are a highly disciplined organization; there's no way they're gonna put up with Axl's antics. AC/DC have never taken the stage 90 seconds late, never mind two hours because the singer's just not feeling it. This is one of the most implausible slabs of bullshit I've ever read.
― the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Wednesday, 23 March 2016 16:36 (ten years ago)
All can barely make it through "Welcome to the Jungle." There is no way he can endure through 15 of them.

LOL at the inanity of the phrase "all but a done deal." You know what else is all but a done deal? Literally everything and anything that's not a done deal.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 23 March 2016 17:01 (ten years ago)
What I heard from someone who I'd trust implicitly on knowledge of this tour is that they were auditioning singers last week. He told me this morning that these stories were the first he'd heard of Axl joining and it sounded like crap to him. Not least because he fully expected GNR to be announcing a US stadium tour imminently.
Agree on the issue of AC/DC's disicpline v Axl's complete lack of it. I can't imagine the AC/DC organisation tolerating someone with an ego that might upset their applecart in any way.
― Roaming gang of aggressive circlepits (ithappens), Thursday, 24 March 2016 16:59 (ten years ago)
so weird that AC/DC has seem so steady for so many years and now it's all disintigrating into acrimony and scandal since the phil rudd incident
― robbie ca$hflo (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 24 March 2016 19:30 (ten years ago)
Would rather see Angus fill-in for Izzy on GNR reunion.

xpost I get it, but AC/DC hasn't been as steady as it seems, especially since both Malcolm and Phil have been AWOL from past tours.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 24 March 2016 19:48 (ten years ago)
"AC/DC band members would like to thank Brian Johnson for his contributions and dedication to the band throughout the years. We wish him all the best with his hearing issues and future ventures. As much as we want this tour to end as it started, we understand, respect and support Brian's decision to stop touring and save his hearing. We are dedicated to fulfilling the remainder of our touring commitments to everyone that has supported us over the years, and are fortunate that Axl Rose has kindly offered his support to help us fulfill this commitment." AC/DC will resume their Rock Or Bust World Tour with Axl Rose joining on vocals. The European stadium tour dates begin on May 7 in Lisbon, Portugal and run through June 12 in Aarhus, Denmark as previously announced (see below for full itinerary). Following this European run of dates with AC/DC, Axl Rose will head out on his Guns N' Roses, 'Not In This Lifetime' Summer Stadium Tour. The 10 postponed U.S shows will be rescheduled and announced imminently, also with Axl Rose.

Huh. Guess he sounds OK. Anyway, way to make Slash and Duff seem like players for hire. "Aren't you excited about this GNR reunion? I never thought I'd play with these guys ev ... hey, it's Angus Young! I'd like to promote my new venture as singer in the beloved Australian band AC/DC! Man, that band's got so many good songs, and even fewer key members than GNR!"
― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 17 April 2016 12:44 (ten years ago)
I got to figure why AC/DC is filling out these dates is that it would cost them a few million dollars if they didn't in cancellation fees.
― earlnash, Sunday, 17 April 2016 13:39 (ten years ago)
ugh Axl's gonna be such a weird fit. I mean his range will be fine to sing the songs but his brand of sleaze is a little too straight-faced for AC/DC. plus his falsetto is gonna sound odd on AC/DC songs.
― Neanderthal, Monday, 18 April 2016 03:09 (ten years ago)
his falsetto basically sounds like Mickey Mouse now but i dunno what songs he'd even use it on, i imagine he knows just what to do with an AC/DC song and will do it instead of bending it into a GNR style vocal
― some dude, Monday, 18 April 2016 03:12 (ten years ago)
shoulda gotten what's his name from cinderella, he was always trying for some AC/DC thing.
