I like how varied this poll has been, as it should, and if nothing else it's given me an excuse to listen to some things that I've avoided for years because I thought I was too clever for them. Most of them have turned out to be pretty good.

space prophet wogan (ultros ultros-ghali), Tuesday, 23 February 2016 20:01 (ten years ago)

I just remembered that the reason I omitted not just SYL but everything Devin-related was the whole "what is extreme?" question that likewise axed most (traditional) doom.

Devilock, Tuesday, 23 February 2016 20:25 (ten years ago)

So pretend I voted for City, Ocean Machine, Terria, and probably Accelerated Evolution, scattered thoughtfully throughout my 100.

so 3 Metallica in the top 9? Wonder what order

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:39 (ten years ago)

my #15, just perfect songwriting. 'well why does it belong on an extreme metal poll then?' you ask. because this is perfect extreme songwriting duh ;)

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:39 (ten years ago)

Welcome back! Very excited about continuing poll.

(Very brief because at work) discovery highlights from today:

Negura Bunket - Unexpectedly cute!
Drudkh - Nothing this entrenched in pagan tree-worship can be bad.
Harvey Milk - What is this Harvey Milk dream sludge? The fourth track killed me.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:42 (ten years ago)

Going to be fun seeing everyones ballots
Bergtatt was my #33
Nattens Madrigal was my #5

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:47 (ten years ago)

the satanic ideal is somewhere between ulver and slayer lol

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:49 (ten years ago)

what Metallica album do you all think will place the highest, and at what number?

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:51 (ten years ago)

south of heaven kinda my platonic satanic ideal. probably the metal album i've played the most since it came out? has to be.

scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:51 (ten years ago)

imago wouldnt that be ...and justice for all by metallica?

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:52 (ten years ago)

any of the first three metallica is a good vote. obvious or whatever but what are ya gonna do? they helped write the book. till the cool guy died anyway.

scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:52 (ten years ago)

...and bass for none

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:53 (ten years ago)

scott you dont like and justice for all?

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:55 (ten years ago)

damn the slayer img link is broken already?
this is why I was uploading them to an img server... I get lazy for a couple of posts and look what happens.

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:56 (ten years ago)

i never listen to and justice for all. some good stuff on it but the beginning of the end...(much prefer garage days EP)

scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:57 (ten years ago)

(soundwise, i definitely prefer the garage days EP. wish all their albums sounded like that.)

scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:58 (ten years ago)

for posterity, the South of Heaven cover (again):

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 17:59 (ten years ago)

next up is something I know a lot of people have been waiting to see place...

8. Godflesh - Streetcleaner (701, 10 votes)

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:00 (ten years ago)

i was VERY excited when and justice came out and i did play it a lot after i bought it but it didn't live forever with me. i could listen to master of puppets any old day of the week.

scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:01 (ten years ago)

south of heaven and streetcleaner, what more do you need out of life?

scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:01 (ten years ago)

Too loooooow

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:01 (ten years ago)

like raaaaaaats

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:02 (ten years ago)

It's definitely enjoyable but I personally wouldn't put Streetcleaner anywhere near the top - dystopian and sludgy, very repetitive, but I kinda see it as an extension to Swans and Killing Joke, and not so much an extreme metal classic.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:12 (ten years ago)

7. Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion (732, 10 votes)

Dominique, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:14 (ten years ago)

i always understand 'mega therion' to be a theme park

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:14 (ten years ago)

hoped that might beat out metallica and slayer to #1

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:15 (ten years ago)

I remember reading about Bergtatt first in a review that completely panned it as a boring Burzum-ripoff, all recycled riffs, a sure sign that the Norwegian scene had totally lost it if bands like this were coming up, etc.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:15 (ten years ago)

"and not so much an extreme metal classic."

i agree but i'll take what i can get in the land of liturgy and deafheaven. still one of my favorite albums.

scott seward, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:16 (ten years ago)

there's still room for surprises... any thoughts on unexpected albums popping up?

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:17 (ten years ago)

Babymetal?
