Both Obscura and Colored Sands rule. That 'Nostalgia" riff might be my all time favorite. Incredible band, the newest lineup is killer.

Count me in the chorus of those surprised and pleased that Colored Sands showed up when it did. I keep expecting to listen to it and decide I've been overreacting about its greatness, but no -- it's been the most unpredictably great experience for me since Mayhem's Ordo ad Chao and before that I don't even remember. Pretty rare that a band is able to make me relive that initial obsessive excitement that comes with a new discovery, especially without going the retro route.

Huh. I just realized: no Behemoth in this whole thing.

Colored Sands is just astonishing, obviously. So many bands make their far-out masterpiece and fail to follow it up. Colored Sands sounds like where you go from Obscura.

Um...Entombed is...really good? What's going on!? All the albums today have been amazing!

Never heard Gorguts. this is consistently punishing stuff. feel like I've been holding my breath for the last 30 minutes listening to this

Anyway, since no one is commenting, I'll say that I didn't vote for this Black Metal, and I guess against popular opinion, I think it's way less evil sounding than Welcome to Hell. I think WtH was actually a demo they ended up releasing as an album, and you can tell Black Metal sounds a lot more polished, but that kind of takes away the "magic" for me.

these are all good today. there is no bad gorguts. every album is great. nothing against them, but i never ever listen to venom. fun though. bathory i could listen to all day.

xxp Heartwork is an album you could've called a sellout at the time but it's really just some caterpillar into steel-edged British heavy metal butterfly shit.

I absolutely agree with this. Black Metal's good but WtH is alarming and fucked up and stupid-brilliant.

(Side note: anyone who likes Welcome to Hell and weird, noisy rock should check out the first Of Cabbages And Kings EP!)

Not as good as Remission obviously but pretty great

never heard the record before. Listening now, and the first song is pretty cool, lot of energy. It almost has a High On Fire thing about it, where I wouldn't be able to attach a genre to it (tho the vibe is nowhere near as dark). Snare tone pretty annoying tho. Avant nu-metal?

they toned down the sludge so a bit more proggy. certainly not nu metal. Less of a today is the day (a couple of them were in TITD) vibe to it.
Great album tho. saw them the week it came out in the tiny glasgow cathouse they played mostly remission stuff plus some from this and a melvins cover.
6 months later they won kerrang album of the year and toured again playing the garage. they still played tons from Remission and more from this. Brilliant gigs

I'm not sure I've ever heard Leviathan! I have Remission and Blood Mountain and apparently voted for the latter.

next one has 664 points but I dont know what #10 is as I only had 20-11 so this is the last one for tonight so we will need to wait until tomorrow for frobisher to tell us if there is a 666.
