Condemned To Obscurity is an amazing song, yeah!

At a junk shop I bought two pairs of binoculars for £25 recently, that's $40? What do you call junk shops over there, thrift stores?

(I was ostensibly spotting English winter birds but I think I glimpsed a malign spirit at one point, or maybe it was just a squirrel)

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Monday, 22 February 2016 21:30 (ten years ago)

If I'd voted in this, Obscura would've been my #1.

chihuahuau, Monday, 22 February 2016 21:30 (ten years ago)

(My cemetery of choice was always West Brompton. I saw a dirty great flock of siskins and bramblings in there a couple of winters ago. This isn't very metal. Maybe the Botanist might approve.)

I haven't listened to Left Hand Path in years. Clandestine was always my go to. Will dig it out.

Poacher (Chinaski), Monday, 22 February 2016 21:31 (ten years ago)

you should

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Monday, 22 February 2016 21:34 (ten years ago)

LHP one of the first death metal albums I liked, but it was more about following the course of Nihilist, who I'd stumbled into first. Swedish death initially appealed to me a lot more than American death, simply for the fact it didn't seem as wanky. Nowadays, I think it's just because it was more indebted to Autopsy, but still, this is a great album, if not as good as the demos/band that preceded it.

Dominique, Monday, 22 February 2016 21:35 (ten years ago)

Bramblings!! I've never identified one successfully. There were some chaffinches in those Highgate woods but that's as exciting as it got. I saw my first siskin last winter in Watford's own Cassiobury Park, though, which is pretty metal of me

This Bathory album was *excellent*. Really really great. Maybe the best thrash record ever? ;)

odysseus (imago), Monday, 22 February 2016 21:35 (ten years ago)

black thrash death, like celtic frost/hellhammer it all started there

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Monday, 22 February 2016 21:38 (ten years ago)

Voivod sounds like funk metal so far!

odysseus (imago), Monday, 22 February 2016 21:40 (ten years ago)

you got something else opened in youtube again?

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Monday, 22 February 2016 21:41 (ten years ago)

this has got swing. that bass

odysseus (imago), Monday, 22 February 2016 21:46 (ten years ago)

This is not what I expected Voivod to sound like. I'm confused, but not in a bad way.

tangenttangent, Monday, 22 February 2016 21:47 (ten years ago)

xp Blackie was a pretty monstrous bassist.

I also was into Nihilist before Entombed (I had their second demo) and I love Left Hand Path; being a texture freak I always found those early Scandinavian bands' demos more exciting than their albums because the guitar sounds were fucking filthy, guttural noise like a truck engine eating another truck engine. Clandestine brought back just the right amount of filth, though.

(My cemetery of choice was always West Brompton. I saw a dirty great flock of siskins and bramblings in there a couple of winters ago. This isn't very metal. Maybe the Botanist might approve.)

This sounds metal as fuck to me, man. Cemeteries, isolation, nature...

gamelan ankylosing spondylitis (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 22 February 2016 21:47 (ten years ago)

...birds that are probably evil.

gamelan ankylosing spondylitis (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 22 February 2016 21:50 (ten years ago)

today's music has been str8 amazing so far, just need entombed to be gr8 and it's 4/4

i went to an esoteric bookshop recently and asked for volumes on occult birdwatching, which stumped the guy behind the counter. still found a couple of things mind...

odysseus (imago), Monday, 22 February 2016 22:01 (ten years ago)

whoa

moans and feedback (Dinsdale), Monday, 22 February 2016 22:01 (ten years ago)

WOW. awesome

gman59, Monday, 22 February 2016 22:03 (ten years ago)

HIGHER than Obscura. crazy

gman59, Monday, 22 February 2016 22:03 (ten years ago)

I saw Entombed a couple of times around the time of Left Hand Path and Clandestine*, but they could never seem to replicate that guitar sound live. As I recall the sound was shite for the whole of the Gods of Grind gig (Entombed / Carcass / Cathedral / Confessor - damn what a line up).

As for cemeteries, I need a couple more to complete the 'Magnificent Seven': https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnificent_Seven_cemeteries

And I'm blank on occult birdwatching, though I'm guessing the links must be there with the alchemists.

xpost.

Poacher (Chinaski), Monday, 22 February 2016 22:04 (ten years ago)

that is a superb link, thank you! we'll stick it on the weekend roster :)

odysseus (imago), Monday, 22 February 2016 22:05 (ten years ago)

Voivod sounds like they are signed to Dischord. They remind me somehow of Rites of Spring. The vocals are quite...emo. I love this so much.

tangenttangent, Monday, 22 February 2016 22:06 (ten years ago)

Xpost

Oh wow! Definitely visiting all of those as a matter of urgency.

tangenttangent, Monday, 22 February 2016 22:08 (ten years ago)

xp They weren't signed to Dischord but the emo-ish band Dahlia Seed actually covered Voivod - "Missing Sequences (Voivod Rules)"

gamelan ankylosing spondylitis (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 22 February 2016 22:09 (ten years ago)

now we know why sund4r loves them so much

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Monday, 22 February 2016 22:11 (ten years ago)

Cool, I'll check both out. :)

tangenttangent, Monday, 22 February 2016 22:12 (ten years ago)

Both Obscura and Colored Sands rule. That 'Nostalgia" riff might be my all time favorite. Incredible band, the newest lineup is killer.

gman59, Monday, 22 February 2016 22:15 (ten years ago)

Count me in the chorus of those surprised and pleased that Colored Sands showed up when it did. I keep expecting to listen to it and decide I've been overreacting about its greatness, but no -- it's been the most unpredictably great experience for me since Mayhem's Ordo ad Chao and before that I don't even remember. Pretty rare that a band is able to make me relive that initial obsessive excitement that comes with a new discovery, especially without going the retro route.

Devilock, Monday, 22 February 2016 22:16 (ten years ago)

Huh. I just realized: no Behemoth in this whole thing.

Devilock, Monday, 22 February 2016 22:20 (ten years ago)

Colored Sands is just astonishing, obviously. So many bands make their far-out masterpiece and fail to follow it up. Colored Sands sounds like where you go from Obscura.

odysseus (imago), Monday, 22 February 2016 22:27 (ten years ago)

Um...Entombed is...really good? What's going on!? All the albums today have been amazing!

odysseus (imago), Monday, 22 February 2016 22:29 (ten years ago)

Never heard Gorguts. this is consistently punishing stuff. feel like I've been holding my breath for the last 30 minutes listening to this

Spottie, Monday, 22 February 2016 22:31 (ten years ago)

i don't know old entombed, started at Wolverine Blues which is probably doing it all wrong. love WB to death

i only have down to #11

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Monday, 22 February 2016 22:33 (ten years ago)

so this is not going to go as predicted :)

Dominique, Monday, 22 February 2016 22:33 (ten years ago)

well, I dunno what's in the top ten so who knows

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Monday, 22 February 2016 22:42 (ten years ago)

yeah so much for thinking my predictions were 80% accurate. jesus. however it's much more fun this way.

gman59, Monday, 22 February 2016 22:42 (ten years ago)

where's Drew Daniel in this poll?

Anyway, since no one is commenting, I'll say that I didn't vote for this Black Metal, and I guess against popular opinion, I think it's way less evil sounding than Welcome to Hell. I think WtH was actually a demo they ended up releasing as an album, and you can tell Black Metal sounds a lot more polished, but that kind of takes away the "magic" for me.

Dominique, Monday, 22 February 2016 22:44 (ten years ago)

drew never votes or comments on poll threads, same with smithy

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Monday, 22 February 2016 22:45 (ten years ago)

drew being punished for crimes against black metal* by being locked in a room with a washing machine for two years iirc

*why do the heathen rage obv amazing

odysseus (imago), Monday, 22 February 2016 22:48 (ten years ago)

Province of Quebec doing well so far. Nothingface was my #1 and both of those Gorguts albums were on my ballot.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Monday, 22 February 2016 22:51 (ten years ago)

you dont like venom?

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Monday, 22 February 2016 23:01 (ten years ago)

these are all good today. there is no bad gorguts. every album is great. nothing against them, but i never ever listen to venom. fun though. bathory i could listen to all day.

scott seward, Monday, 22 February 2016 23:02 (ten years ago)

xxp Heartwork is an album you could've called a sellout at the time but it's really just some caterpillar into steel-edged British heavy metal butterfly shit.

I guess against popular opinion, I think it's way less evil sounding than Welcome to Hell

I absolutely agree with this. Black Metal's good but WtH is alarming and fucked up and stupid-brilliant.

gamelan ankylosing spondylitis (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 22 February 2016 23:04 (ten years ago)

(Side note: anyone who likes Welcome to Hell and weird, noisy rock should check out the first Of Cabbages And Kings EP!)
