I remember reading a review of that in some magazine - Creem Metal, maybe? - that was so disparaging that I immediately went out and bought it on cassette. I've never regretted it. Whole album's great but "Equimanthorn" is all-time classic.

This was in the distant past, so long ago that black metal was still just a Venom album to me.

I voted for this too. I remember in about 1991 just after i got into nirvana/grunge a mate loaning me this, a slayer and the 1st metallica lp. This was the one i liked the most.

yeah tt asked me what genre the song Clouded was when I played it to her this morning as she prepared for work (best way to start the day!) and I said I genuinely thought it was in a genre of its own

Dom, definitely check out The Erosion of Sanity - it's the beginning of Gorguts going batshit. Maybe a coincidence but the song "Condemned to Obscurity" feels like the beginning of the thread that got more and more progressively tangled and became Obscura. From Wisdom to Hate is good, but it feels like they made Obscura and were like "whoa, what the fuck was that?!" and backed off a bit.

"Considered Dead," their first one, is good but very straightforward Roadrunner death metal.

(My cemetery of choice was always West Brompton. I saw a dirty great flock of siskins and bramblings in there a couple of winters ago. This isn't very metal. Maybe the Botanist might approve.)

I haven't listened to Left Hand Path in years. Clandestine was always my go to. Will dig it out.

LHP one of the first death metal albums I liked, but it was more about following the course of Nihilist, who I'd stumbled into first. Swedish death initially appealed to me a lot more than American death, simply for the fact it didn't seem as wanky. Nowadays, I think it's just because it was more indebted to Autopsy, but still, this is a great album, if not as good as the demos/band that preceded it.

Bramblings!! I've never identified one successfully. There were some chaffinches in those Highgate woods but that's as exciting as it got. I saw my first siskin last winter in Watford's own Cassiobury Park, though, which is pretty metal of me
