mmm Seven Churches. I neglected that one for too long.

yeah, such an awesome gargling mess. in my top 20, but i'm fuck old so no surprise.

somewhere btwn Gabriel Garcia Marquez and early Evel Knievel guy (contenderizer), Saturday, 20 February 2016 22:23 (ten years ago)

ok now we're getting somewhere. I was the Blaze #1, Morbid Tales in my top 10, and def voted for Seven Churches. Blaze was the album that got me really got me into extreme metal. I still listen to it all the time, and though at any particular moment I might prefer a different Darkthrone album to jam as my fave, I can't deny it's most important to me personally.

Dominique, Saturday, 20 February 2016 22:24 (ten years ago)

adam youre too old for the ilx 43 club

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 20 February 2016 22:26 (ten years ago)

Possessed in general took me a while to appreciate, but now, I rank them even higher than I did when we submitted ballots for this. I like pretty much everything they did, including 1991 and 1993 demos which crank up the death metal quotient much higher, and suggest they could have been real contenders for much longer than they were.

I actually considered voting for Thy Kingdom Come, Morbid Angel's '87 demo, as I find it has some of that old school black charm (a la Possessed, German Thrash, Celtic Frost), but as I recall, I did end up opting for Altars

Dominique, Saturday, 20 February 2016 22:27 (ten years ago)

oh and I am 42, can I join the club??

Dominique, Saturday, 20 February 2016 22:27 (ten years ago)

Mental Funeral not at #1 is too low.

jmm, Saturday, 20 February 2016 22:35 (ten years ago)

xpost

jmm were you Mental Funeral's #1? Let us come together to drink fermented yeast beverages

I don't think I've even heard of that band before

moans and feedback (Dinsdale), Saturday, 20 February 2016 22:44 (ten years ago)

I haven't heard this record, but I have seen Neon Genesis Evangelion, which it's apparently based on. Also, it's only 24 minutes long, so I have no excuse now.

Dominique, Saturday, 20 February 2016 22:46 (ten years ago)

Heard of, but just barely. Name says it all.

"Rob Marton had to leave the band because he developed seizures from standing too close to the amp during shows."

somewhere btwn Gabriel Garcia Marquez and early Evel Knievel guy (contenderizer), Saturday, 20 February 2016 22:47 (ten years ago)

Yeah, Mental Funeral was my top pick. It's my ideal of how DM should sound.

jmm, Saturday, 20 February 2016 22:50 (ten years ago)

have heard Dave Wite drum for like 100 other bands tho, fucker's amazing

kinda regret selling my original vinyl discordance axis but i didn't play it much. fun record though!

scott seward, Saturday, 20 February 2016 22:57 (ten years ago)

everyone should just listen to alters of madness all the time. every day.

scott seward, Saturday, 20 February 2016 22:58 (ten years ago)

Yeah, Autopsy is sounding really good so far.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Saturday, 20 February 2016 23:01 (ten years ago)

Listening to Enslaved now. Having only heard their more recent albums I always dismissed them as being sort of bland but this ain't bad. A bit like Borknagar with the cheesiness dialled back a great deal.

space prophet wogan (ultros ultros-ghali), Saturday, 20 February 2016 23:02 (ten years ago)

Thus run is great. Individual Thought Patterns was my first Death album! Blew my high school mind.

gaz coombes? yo he don't got NUTHIN ta prove! (Neanderthal), Saturday, 20 February 2016 23:08 (ten years ago)

I think my problem with Death is that I like death dirty. Like holding a ripe toddler to your face and inhaling through its diaper.

somewhere btwn Gabriel Garcia Marquez and early Evel Knievel guy (contenderizer), Saturday, 20 February 2016 23:14 (ten years ago)

ITP was around where I stopped listening to Death. I was like, "so, you're really into, like, playing your guitar now, huh?"

time to freak out about all the great albums that haven't showed up yet

but they have to show up

they have to

but what if they don't

gaaah

moans and feedback (Dinsdale), Saturday, 20 February 2016 23:16 (ten years ago)

"Individual Thought Patterns" is a strangely un-metal album title

Discordance Axis are great—absolutely one of the best grindcore bands ever—but I think I prefer Jouhou to The Inalienable Dreamless.

Below the Lights is when I started liking Enslaved. I still wish they'd abandon the black metal parts (vocals in particular) and go full-on prog, but I wish that about a lot of bands. Black metal sucks, is my point.

the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Saturday, 20 February 2016 23:18 (ten years ago)

Sunn O))) album is good, didn't vote for tho

also realizing I saw Dave Witte play w/Melt Banana, just didn't know who he was at the time

Dominique, Saturday, 20 February 2016 23:19 (ten years ago)

So so late but

Listening to Enslaved now. Having only heard their more recent albums I always dismissed them as being sort of bland but this ain't bad. A bit like Borknagar with the cheesiness dialled back a great deal.

As Enslaved was my favorite band in the world until Isa (and everything after), I can easily recommend moving backward through their discography. The first song on Mardraum destroys pretty much everything -- and the rest of that album isn't that much of a dip. And Eld and Frost are two more peaks in the Norwegian scene. Isa ushered in a softer Enslaved, and while I can appreciate that others like the melo-prog style, I vastly prefer all things prior.

edit: ha in light of the Enslaved post that just now arrived ahead of mine

Devilock, Saturday, 20 February 2016 23:20 (ten years ago)

xxp I have the opposite problem, I find stuff like Vertebrae isn't heavy enough and just ends up being really dull like Steven Wilson tried to make folk metal album of something.

So I think I'll do what you suggested Devilock

space prophet wogan (ultros ultros-ghali), Saturday, 20 February 2016 23:22 (ten years ago)

OK so now listening to Altars of Madness for the first time

SO MANY RIFFS

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 20 February 2016 23:27 (ten years ago)

Yeah I think Enslaved are better at prog than they are at BM but Below the Lights splits the difference nicely. 'Queen of Night' always throws me when it comes on though!

Gavin, Leeds, Saturday, 20 February 2016 23:28 (ten years ago)

Siegbran is the opposite of you guys

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 20 February 2016 23:29 (ten years ago)

I can't help thinking Lynx missed out by not having a 'Vastness and Sorrow' range.

Poacher (Chinaski), Saturday, 20 February 2016 23:37 (ten years ago)

Love Two Hunters but too high, probably. 'I Will Lay Down My Bones...' might justify it's placing though

they had more than one album huh

odysseus (imago), Saturday, 20 February 2016 23:45 (ten years ago)

Seasons is pretty much the sound of Slayer realizing they could just recycle Reign In Blood and South of Heaven forever, without much thought or effort.
