if the vote had been reheld i dread to think how many more 2014/2015 albums would have made it. Its far too soon to call anything that recent all-time imo
― The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 20 February 2016 16:51 (ten years ago)
who was saying that Death didn't really click with them? I think they were a witch we should burn, iirc.
― Frobisher, Saturday, 20 February 2016 16:51 (ten years ago)
imo if you don't like Carcass and Death ur extreme metal credentials are v. weak.
― Frobisher, Saturday, 20 February 2016 16:52 (ten years ago)
Death are not my favorite. Would probably be okay if they had a decent guitar player though.

And I only like Carcass from Symphonies on.

I know a lot of people will agree with you but as someone who voted for a fair few recent albums, I put together my ballot based on what I like and what records mean the most to me here and now. If I hear something new that I like more than the older records, I'm not going to hold off voting for it - yes, I might not feel the same about it in five years' time but I'll worry about that then. I might just as easily end up revising my opinion on something from 2001 or 1997 or 1986 in five years' time too.
― Gavin, Leeds, Saturday, 20 February 2016 16:59 (ten years ago)
sorry guys I gotta step away for a bit! I'll be back not too long from now!
― Frobisher, Saturday, 20 February 2016 17:03 (ten years ago)
Probably wouldn't have included any recent stuff if I'd voted. Except Babymetal oc.

I bought this album (xpost, Gojira) on eMusic years and years ago, partly because of the band name, partly because of the whale on the cover. I didn't really think of it as extreme. Maybe I'll go back and listen to it again sometime today.

Ha yeah what Frobisher said upthread about the Angel Hair album cover not being indicative of the music definitely applies to this one.
― Gavin, Leeds, Saturday, 20 February 2016 17:30 (ten years ago)
Just realised we've not had any Gorguts albums yet. Maybe they're all in the top ten?

every gorguts album is better than a high on fire, gojira, electric wizard, or deafheaven record.

so maybe they will all come later.
Just wanna say as an outsider, but def metalcurious, this thread has been a boon. Been sampling almost everything; good reading too. Thx dudes.

I know the identity of the next 2 albums coming up but frobisher is back and will post them. I just want to say the next album is way too low and shame on you all!!!!!
― The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 20 February 2016 18:02 (ten years ago)
the fact he never gave me #42 suggests its an album shockingly low and was expected to be top 10. Hoping its slayer haha
― The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 20 February 2016 18:03 (ten years ago)
Gavin OTM +
I have a hard time taking this attitude very seriously when we're talking about a message board poll about a style that has only been around for about 30 years, tbh, especially, when there have been so many developments and offshoots in that time, and especially when you were so insistent on getting people to participate. I'll freely admit to not being as deeply knowledgeable about early extreme metal as many people, and I'm up for learning more, but I was able to list 40 albums that I genuinely enjoy and that mean something to me. If I were going to teach a course or write a book on the subject, I'd definitely put more work into studying the history, and the results of a poll give me something to work with, but I wasn't going to treat making my ballot like a job.
Sunbather (my #9) does a lot more for me than Filosofem or that shitty Venom record fwiw.
― Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Saturday, 20 February 2016 18:09 (ten years ago)
haha i wasnt insistent on anyone taking part. i had nothing to do with this poll at all
― The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 20 February 2016 18:13 (ten years ago)
but you did insist on talking about it on facebook all day ;)
I'm having fun with it! I just think it's kind of goofy to be all 'kids these days' about the venerable aged tradition of extreme metal.
― Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Saturday, 20 February 2016 18:17 (ten years ago)
I thought the point of Venom was that they were shitty?
― Tom Violence, Saturday, 20 February 2016 18:18 (ten years ago)
For me, this poll has been fun, and good timing considering I dove headfirst into extreme metal only in the last few years. My entryway happened to be old (like early 90s) records, so it's been a slow, gradual, and basically organic journey branching out (forwards and backwards) from there. I simply don't know that much about new extreme metal, so if we re-poll in 5 years, my ballot is almost certainly bound to look different.
I mean, it's all in fun right? Who treats this like a job (except for our valiant poll-runners)?
― Dominique, Saturday, 20 February 2016 18:21 (ten years ago)
xpost
ha yeah about Venom. I actually didn't really get them when I heard Black Metal, but Welcome to Hell made a lot more sense, as far as the general sloppiness and scummy atomsphere
― Dominique, Saturday, 20 February 2016 18:22 (ten years ago)
I'm pretty sure i wasnt to post the next one but maybe im meant to? frobisher?

Aye, as I said. Finally a non nazi tainted scene that allowed me to check out BM without worrying about whether they were church burning nazi's or not
― The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 20 February 2016 18:33 (ten years ago)
MuchMusic's Power Hour used to play this when I was a kid in the late 80s. It seemed like interminable garbage at the time. The extended feedback at the end does seem more appealing now, if not exactly great.
― Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Saturday, 20 February 2016 18:39 (ten years ago)
I've never heard this Weakling record! Will add it to The List.

Listening as well -- considering I don't usually like this style, it's good so far. Pretty epic too, so I can imagine this would work well in a lot of situations where I'm not glued to my chair listening intently. There are some surprisingly headbanging moments on this (wonder how much Josh Smith later of Fucking Champs had to do w/these lines), and doomy parts too. The only thing I can't really get behind are the Burzum-y vocals.
