I THOUGHT Corrupted had gone full Kayo Dot, but it turned out I was mashing up the loud bit of Garten with an open Youtube tab of Reverend Bizarre, which started playing too for some reason

The result was music better than either band. Music that shall never be repeated.

This Krallice is really excellent!

Would not have expected Battles to beat At the Heart of Winter at the very least. I wonder if that means Pure Holocaust is yet to come. (I didn't vote for it but probably could have.)

For a while Battles was my fav Immortal album but I think they're much better off dialing back the chaos.

And Demonaz's arm tendons are better off too.

The band's sound is characterized by down-tuned guitars and bass playing slow, monotonous riffs under deep layers of feedback. The vocals are harsh, guttural growls, and the music alternates between long instrumental sections and sections with vocals which go for long periods of time without rest. They have been described by one writer as "some of the heaviest, gloomiest doom/sludge around, distinctly cacophonous, layering feedback pulverizing progressions into a distinctly cacophonous rumble."[3] However, some songs feature long acoustic sections, spoken-word interludes, and unconventional instruments. An example of the latter can be found on their 2005 album El mundo frio, which is a 72-minute song with extensive sections of harp. As another writer notes, "Right when you think you can peg Corrupted as an all Doom band they release a lush acoustic set within their bleak musical landscape."[1] To this effect, they recently added a keyboardist, Takehito Miyagi, to their lineup, which had previously consisted only of guitar, bass, drums and vocals.

Corrupted has a few idiosyncrasies. Though they are from Japan and their members (including lyricist/drummer Chew Hasegawa) on most releases are all Japanese, they sing almost exclusively in Spanish, though some songs contain sections in Japanese or English. In addition, the band has never taken promotional pictures nor do any of the albums contain group photos. The only known existing photographs are taken by fans at concerts. The band also never does interviews. Corrupted's albums typically contain extensive liner notes in the form of bleak black-and-white photographs, often real-life scenes of war-torn areas or other depictions of human suffering.

Much of Corrupted's discography appears on split albums, which they share with other doom metal bands or often with grindcore bands. The band is known for its ability to produce songs of virtually any length; their longest album El mundo frio consists of a single song substantially longer than an hour, while their shortest song, "Reset", recorded for a homeless benefit compilation, lasts less than two minutes.

After not being hugely impressed with Apocalyptic Raids 1990 AD, I initially wrote off Hellhammer as a bit overhyped but then I heard Satanic Rites a couple years later and was amazed how much better it sounded than their 'official' debut.

The first time I heard Repulsion was on the (UK) Grindcrusher (MOSH 12 MC BRO!) comp; they were an unknown quantity to me at the time but I bought the album as soon as I found it. They just sounded so diseased and that goddamn guitar sound...

I think I wore out the A side of that tape listening to Morbid Angel, Carcass, Godflesh and Repulsion (and, you know, Heresy because it was there).

My #2. As good as Morbid Angel is when they go more straightforward like on Altars and Covenant, Blessed is just ... like classical music turned death metal. Flows perfectly from start to finish.

Production is kind of lacking and I've heard the remaster actually improves the sound. I need to grab it one of these days.

I kinda miss the more musical element Brunelle brought to the band; there's something to be said for letting Azagthoth off the chain but I listen to Altars and Blessed way more than any of the later albums.

Love Repulsion -- somehow, that record never gets old for me.

Oh yeah, gotta recommend the Master "Unreleased 1985 Album" aka "Funeral Bitch" for Repulsion fans. Similar vibe, production sounds a little more like it was recorded in a dumpster.

they have a really big non-metal hepcat audience. maybe that was partly the doing of people like aquarius records who would write long love-letter reviews of their stuff alongside all the avant/indie stuff they sold. aquarius definitely instrumental in getting a lot of u.s. people into more fucked up/lo-fi BM via their old catalogs as well.
