new album is fun for sure. i'm gonna have to get caught up on all his stuff soon.

Once, in the middle of another interview, he got up, walked out of the room, went to the airport, and flew away.

So many gems on I'm Up.

one of those rare 'omg rocker and rapper photo op' pairings where i really would be curious to hear what they'd do in the studio together

some dude, Friday, 25 March 2016 20:26 (eight years ago) link

slime3 sounds ill

johnny crunch, Friday, 25 March 2016 23:39 (eight years ago) link

every thug tape lately feels like a compilation ep to me more than an album

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 26 March 2016 00:08 (eight years ago) link

I'm Up had very strong bookend tracks to make it feel more like an album than his releases usually do. but you definitely get a weird sense that any given Young Thug release is kind of an arbitrary data dump, where even someone else super prolific like Gucci seemed to be packaging up the last 20 songs he finished so that there's at least a chronological sense to what ends up on what record.

some dude, Saturday, 26 March 2016 00:13 (eight years ago) link

yeah agreed...i miss the structured/sonic congruity of rich gang/barter vi

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 26 March 2016 00:14 (eight years ago) link

it's a shame that stuff like the all-London concept of SS1 and Metro Thuggin and Migo Thuggin keep falling by the wayside, collaborative releases like Rich Gang seem like a good fit for him.

some dude, Saturday, 26 March 2016 00:17 (eight years ago) link

i was thinking when listening to SS3 how much i missed the rich gang rape feeling like an album. pretty much everything thug has released since barter feels interchangeable.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 26 March 2016 00:43 (eight years ago) link

Kinda think that's mostly a knee jerk reaction at this point. SS3 is pretty good imo.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Saturday, 26 March 2016 10:48 (eight years ago) link

for anyone interested in a single-mood compilation of 2015 Thug, I think my new one came out well, and it's London-heavy

I kind of think it's the opposite, the knee jerk reaction is "what a genius who does no wrong"

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 26 March 2016 15:24 (eight years ago) link

I know there are people on twitter who tweet that but I haven't really seen any real excitement about his projects since Barter 6. This one seems to please most of the people who actually like him though.
I think the shorter format suits him - even the Rich Gang tape could have been tightened up a bit. But I miss the feeling of an arc that B6 had.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Saturday, 26 March 2016 15:43 (eight years ago) link

these songs are awesome

Jacques_Lamure, Sunday, 27 March 2016 15:47 (eight years ago) link

Man, Stoner came up on shuffle for me recently. I think that song might be one of the classics of the genre.

Just like a...BOSS BOSS

Slime 3 is my fav thing he's done (at least that I've heard) like how short and concise it is and feels really tight

http://www.xxlmag.com/news/2016/03/young-thug-digits-memo-tattoos-one-day/

almost half the record was recorded 2 years ago! it's funny how everyone tries to wring some kind of artistic narrative out of Young Thug releases when there's no correlation between when stuff is released and how long ago it might've been made.

some dude, Thursday, 31 March 2016 10:52 (eight years ago) link

Oh I have no idea, I'm not a huge fan. I think I really like his thing in small doses because he's exciting but can get grating for me quickly

rockpalast '82 (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 31 March 2016 11:04 (eight years ago) link

There's an artistic narrative in regards to how and when he chooses to release them, I guess?

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 31 March 2016 11:18 (eight years ago) link

I'm Up's title and cover changed within 48 hours of its release, how organized and deliberate do you think this stuff can be

some dude, Thursday, 31 March 2016 11:28 (eight years ago) link

There were a lot of references not that long ago about how Thug always plans out his releases several projects in advance ("this is for SS3") and even the LodT interview references the conscious choice of putting the "hits" on this (SS3) while the album will be very different:

My sound now is still bouncy, but it's kind of laid back. [Hy!£UN35] is more musical, you'll see the true producer of London. You'll see all the details, it's not a formula on the album music. Like, the stuff we have on SS3 is more formal: let's take it straight to the club, let's put it on the Hot 100. It's straight forward. The stuff we got for the album is not in the same formula. You can tell, London put his heart in here. It's not typical. The new songs we got are ridiculously tremendous.

So there seems to be some sort of plan at work. But shit happens, obviously.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 31 March 2016 11:36 (eight years ago) link

definitely the best of the slime seasons

de l'asshole (flopson), Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:24 (eight years ago) link

trying to figure out how much to tone done our enthusiasm over thug to balance the scale against 'ppl on twitter' who overrate him seems dumb when he's releasing music this good imo

de l'asshole (flopson), Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:25 (eight years ago) link

otm^^

marcos, Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:27 (eight years ago) link

way more immediate than barter 6, which turned out to be a classic

de l'asshole (flopson), Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:27 (eight years ago) link

also i dont really think ppl itt have been gushing over everything thug has released lately

Lol who is he kidding none of these are going up billboard

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:50 (eight years ago) link

I don't think I like "immediate" thug, I have a heavy bias towards "very replayable" thug ("best friend" "hey I" "thief in the night") and the subtle complex compositional thug ("halftime" "just might be") but little time for aggressive or repetitive thug. Maybe to a biased degree but I like when he creates conscious effects more than when he's merely weird or abrasive or overly "raw"

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:53 (eight years ago) link

For me barter vi > ss1 > the rest

d-40 i agree w/ this a lot

marcos, Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:55 (eight years ago) link

part of the reason i prefer barter 6 over anything else he's put out

marcos, Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:56 (eight years ago) link

These new records are good of course because he's good, but I can't envision any of them making it up my list of favorites

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:56 (eight years ago) link

tour > b6 > ss3 > 1017 > ss1/2

de l'asshole (flopson), Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:57 (eight years ago) link

so many classic moments on ss3. i've had it on repeat all morning

de l'asshole (flopson), Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:58 (eight years ago) link

i should probably listen to the thing

marcos, Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:58 (eight years ago) link

Oh yeah I wasn't ranking rich gang or any earlier thug tapes

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 31 March 2016 14:59 (eight years ago) link

what does 'i like replayable thug' mean? you're saying you like young thugs songs you like?

i find ss3 very replayable and very complex and compositional.

Jacques_Lamure, Thursday, 31 March 2016 16:04 (eight years ago) link

what does 'replayable' mean for a record that's 6 days old

some dude, Thursday, 31 March 2016 16:28 (eight years ago) link

means that on the seventh day, it rests

"Digits" and "With Them" on the Hot 100 this week! obviously they'd need to catch on at radio to stay there though.

"Robots are sexy as shit" - Big Sean (some dude), Wednesday, 6 April 2016 03:19 (eight years ago) link

that's kind of my depressing wake-up call after jumping into satellite radio -- there are stations where you hear new rap music, but it's not a deep rotation so you still get a really weak cross-section of new music

not enough thugger, come on

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 6 April 2016 03:34 (eight years ago) link

yeah...i imagine he gets more songs on the air in the deep south but where i live "Best Friend" is the only thing from these 5 solo projects over the past year that i've heard on the radio.
