This is the only Sigh album I kinda like

space prophet wogan (ultros ultros-ghali), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 01:00 (ten years ago)

DHG are returning. 666 International might even make the top 100…maybe…

Sigh! Oh dear. Certainly extreme but comes off a bit cheesy to me. Except for 'A Sunset Song', which transcends cheese and becomes amazing. Maybe the album deserves to be here just for that

Wildhoney hasn't aged that well but I really liked Tiamat back in the day.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 01:13 (ten years ago)

I'm liking it well enough, two tracks in...

Frobisher, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 01:16 (ten years ago)

seems like they hedged too much when they could have been artier and made a better album, though.

Frobisher, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 01:18 (ten years ago)

ok folks, are you ready for the last album of the night? its a pretty good one, imo.

Frobisher, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 01:19 (ten years ago)

xpost

also, I will say that the Dismember (which I'd argue *is* canon) is too low! Compared to what death metal became only a few years later, it might seem quaint, but the tunes are good, and for some reason, I am a sucker for death with d-beats.

Dominique, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 01:19 (ten years ago)

I really didn't like Wildhoney when I listened to it ages ago, I'll give at another go at some point. My taste in metal has changed somewhat in the last few years.

I've tried really hard to get into BaN but nothing sticks. It all sounds so monotonous to me, which may be the point but it doesn't make for anything particularly interesting

space prophet wogan (ultros ultros-ghali), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 01:24 (ten years ago)

Aaaaaaah this is so good, the opening track is like the perfect straight BM song. Then it gets weird, having made its point!

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 01:28 (ten years ago)

Such a smooth, melodic record. I know this might seem boring, but it sounds like honey - it's exquisite. Coming from a guy whose grasp of dissonance is so extensive, too!

By far my favourite BAN, of those I've heard, and my number 9

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 01:31 (ten years ago)

P.S. I'm listening to the Angel Hair now. It's great!! Who knew this kind of stuff was being made in the 1990s? Not I!

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 01:32 (ten years ago)

*sigh* This is the sort of thing I grew up believing "emo" to mean.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 01:35 (ten years ago)

i still listen to wildhoney! that came out at a time when there were sooooo many cool albums that i really felt should have crossed over more and gained non-metal fans. just stuff i thought more people should hear. that list is kinda endless though. plus, people suck and they wanted to listen to terrible music.

scott seward, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 01:37 (ten years ago)

777 was my #5. It manages to be so pleasant in its mind-warping pitch-bending.

xp The 'emo' comment was re Angel Hair btw.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 01:38 (ten years ago)

I never knew people thought of the '90s Gravity Records bands (Angel Hair et. al.) as metal-related at all.

JRN, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 01:41 (ten years ago)

Angel Hair sounds like what I'd call "screamo," which certainly had crossover into metal scenes.

Frobisher, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 01:43 (ten years ago)

Ha, I checked when I nominated it and no one vetoed it. I kind of feel like splitting hairs as to whether different kinds of super-heavy guitar rock with screamed vocals count as metal or not is silly, tbh. Deafheaven probably owes as much to the heavier end of classic emo as they do to bands with long hair.
xp

When Wildhoney came out I'd not been listening to a lot of metal for several years (except for WASP and Savatage for some reason), but a typically derisive review in Alternative Press ("hey! a metal album but it actually has BRAINS!") drove me to check it out. It didn't hurt that I was a massive stoner at the time, but that thing blew my mind. Painted the weirdest pictures in my head, stuff that has stuck with me over the years. I love those hypnotic drum choices at the beginning of "Gaia."

Overfilled toothpaste tubes
Sleepless and timeless faces
Drippety drop on sugarcubes

Twinkles and gazes...

Devilock, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 01:54 (ten years ago)

I don't think I voted in this, but thus far I rate Reverend Bizarre (such a great band, ticks all the doom boxes), Panopticon, Obituary (that guitar tone!), Morbid Angel, Carcass (both records), Bathory. I'll be trying to check out as many of the records I am unfamiliar with as possible- thanks for making this happen!

Gaz upon my works ye mighty, and despair (Neil S), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 10:08 (ten years ago)

Oh *that* Angel Hair. I know it well and yes its Screamo. I didn't recognise the album cover. Were Orchid and Jerome's Dream nominated too?
Not really metal but liked by metal fans,

actually that stuff could have come out on Hydrahead records easily along with early Isis etc

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 11:35 (ten years ago)

Someone needs to wake frobisher up

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 15:21 (ten years ago)

Were you thinking of Angel Witch, CS?

Frobisher, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 15:47 (ten years ago)

no

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 15:49 (ten years ago)

Imaginary Sonicscape is such a lark. Love that album. Their best?

Nobodies talking about Meshuggah, but someone's voting for all of this Meshuggah!

Frobisher, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 16:02 (ten years ago)

I'm surprised Imago is iffy on Sigh. They're kind of the thrash metal Cardiacs.

posted with permission by (dog latin), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 16:02 (ten years ago)

They were quite the darlings for awhile there.

Frobisher, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 16:04 (ten years ago)

Awesome thread!

Certainly extreme but comes off a bit cheesy to me.

I don't recognize the distinction. & dog latin otm.

a faded dose from rays gone by (contenderizer), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 16:05 (ten years ago)

love sigh

a faded dose from rays gone by (contenderizer), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 16:05 (ten years ago)

Sigh don't sound anything like Cardiacs unless you mean "have lots of keyboards and are a bit wacky"

Catch-33 is definitely my favourite Mushuggah album, a lot of people out there seem to think it's one of their worst which is just crazy

space prophet wogan (ultros ultros-ghali), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 16:08 (ten years ago)

i just assume everyone likes meshuggah but doesnt admit it

Catch 33 is my favorite Meshuggah too, though ever since I started listening to "real" metal, for some reason don't have much urge to play it (or the band in general).

Dominique, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 16:15 (ten years ago)

er, and the other 146...

146. Sodom - In the Sign of Evil (191, 3 votes)

Frobisher, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 16:16 (ten years ago)

^ that's some raw shit

Frobisher, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 16:17 (ten years ago)

oh hell yeah. This was in my top 5, and IMO is the best thing Sodom ever did (with their follow up full-length being a close second). Raw, simple, not really dated at all, especially when you consider how many bands still go for that old school black metal sound

Dominique, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 16:18 (ten years ago)

does anyone really listen to that Sigh album anymore? it would make me too tired to play it now.

scott seward, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 16:21 (ten years ago)

maybe Mr.Bungle fans...

scott seward, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 16:22 (ten years ago)

i probably listen to meshuggah more now than i did when those albums listed came out. i'm into precision riffs these days.

any passionate opinions on Death? I find it hard to get into this band for some reason.

Dominique, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 16:46 (ten years ago)

I think they're amazing! I love them!

Frobisher, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 16:49 (ten years ago)
