I wondered how the early extreme bands would do

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 15 February 2016 22:19 (ten years ago)

ok, my hands are cramped. That was a good start, imo. Here's the countdown so far:

201. Liturgy - Renihilation
201. Xasthur - Subliminal Genocide
200. Virus - The Black Flux
199. Yob - The Unreal Never Lived
198. Nocturnus - The Key
196. Altar of Plagues - Teethed Glory and Injury
196. Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors
195. Meshuggah - Chaosphere
194. Satyricon - Nemesis Divina

Did I vote in this? I feel like I completely missed out on it happening. Because I would've voted Symphonies of Sickness into the top 10 through sheer force of will.

we salute you, our half-inflated dark lord (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 15 February 2016 22:30 (ten years ago)

no one remembers pretty sure we did our ballots about 5 years ago

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 15 February 2016 22:32 (ten years ago)

I was one of the votes for Subliminal Genocide. It was low on my ballot but I wanted to vote for something by Xasthur, because for a year or so all I listened to was suicidal black metal.

I also voted for Nemesis Divina, which I heard for the first time during voting and went out and bought less than a week later. Excellent album, more polished than a lot of the other Norwegian black metal I voted for but great in its own right. I'm glad I didn't hear this when I was 20, I would have dismissed it.

Tom Violence, Monday, 15 February 2016 22:33 (ten years ago)

xp Well it'll be uh interesting.

xxp Like SoS was a crucial record at the time, had to be heavily influential on the newly brutalized death metal scene at the time.

Maybe it would have stopped you listening to dashboard confessional if you had heard it at age 20, Tom?

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 15 February 2016 22:34 (ten years ago)

my sources say you did not vote Hawkz. I am a shitty poll runner and was not good at whipping up the votes.

Frobisher, Monday, 15 February 2016 22:43 (ten years ago)

naw, I don't know. the tabulation magic seems to sometimes make things with the same score not be ties. Probably has to do with weighted/unweighted, positions in the ballot, etc.

― Frobisher, Monday, February 15, 2016 10:07 PM (42 minutes ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Some people asked to have their ballots counted as mixed weighted/unweighted and the way I had scoring set up meant that this led to fractional scores - Painkiller actually got 161.9444444444 points fwiw.

conditional random jepsen (seandalai), Monday, 15 February 2016 22:52 (ten years ago)

frobisher or seandalai any chance you could PM me my ballot?

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 15 February 2016 23:45 (ten years ago)

What time are you starting today frobisher?

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 13:49 (ten years ago)

Yow, was off work yesterday so missed most of the internet -- happy to see this going (and also happy to see only one of my votes show up so far)!

Dominique, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 13:53 (ten years ago)

Cool poll. So sorry I didn't vote. The Sham Mirrors was one of my favourite albums of all time for a very long time. I'll def be checking out more ITL.

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 15:56 (ten years ago)

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 16:31 (ten years ago)

I really can't get a grasp on which Krallice album to start with, are they one of those bands where every album is so different that you can't really start anywhere? Should I just listen to all of them?

Tom Violence, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 19:34 (ten years ago)

I'm not sure because I can't remember listening to them. I'm sure I have but IDK!

Frobisher, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 19:37 (ten years ago)

Frobisher, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 19:37 (ten years ago)

ccpost: Their albums aren't that different from each other, the s/t's the most straightforward, they've managed to get more complex but more cohesive as they gelled as a unit, Ygg Huur from last year is the only one that had a significant change in sound being a bit more tech-deathy. I'd go with the first one and continue from there.

space prophet wogan (ultros ultros-ghali), Tuesday, 16 February 2016 19:39 (ten years ago)

that should be xxpost obvs.

The next one up is surprising. I think people will be surprised how low it placed.

Frobisher, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:05 (ten years ago)

oohh

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:06 (ten years ago)

reign in blood?

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:07 (ten years ago)

something I'd have thought equally important, but for early US death metal.

Frobisher, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:10 (ten years ago)

death?

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:13 (ten years ago)

well, not that important!

Frobisher, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:14 (ten years ago)

I thought people liked this album...
I like it.

Frobisher, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:15 (ten years ago)

I like it but I don't even know if it'd make my top 50 death metal albums. It's great. But they never excited me.

we salute you, our half-inflated dark lord (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:19 (ten years ago)

hmmmm

Frobisher, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:21 (ten years ago)

OK I'm listening to Vlad Tepes/Belketre for the first time, for some reason I never got round to hearing any LLN, pretty good. That intro bit was strangely jaunty

space prophet wogan (ultros ultros-ghali), Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:21 (ten years ago)

I thought that Obituary album would be top 20

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:23 (ten years ago)

that 1996 Belketre demo with the name I will never remember is amazing

odysseus (imago), Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:24 (ten years ago)

it's like Ambre Solaire Vuohdvordenakhre or something idk

odysseus (imago), Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:24 (ten years ago)

i was closer than i had any right to be

odysseus (imago), Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:25 (ten years ago)

XXXP yeah its great! there's some serious riffage later on, too.

Well, this is supposed to be the BEST, not most important or influential or whatever.

Frobisher, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:25 (ten years ago)

xxxpost argh

I think most Obituary fans rank Cause of Death way higher. Personally I prefer SWR for its less refined approach. I remember a time when that title track was the heaviest, scariest thing I'd ever heard. (Of course I was like 14.)

Devilock, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:25 (ten years ago)

i prefer cause of death to slowly we rot

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:26 (ten years ago)

oic

Frobisher, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:27 (ten years ago)

also xxxpost there were some recent Vlad Tepes reissues with "better" sound quality than the originals. I keep forgetting that I bought two of them and have yet to actually play them.

Devilock, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:28 (ten years ago)

174. Kayo Dot - Dowsing Anemone With Copper Tongue (170, 2 votes)

Frobisher, Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:28 (ten years ago)

TOO LOW

haha this was my only kayo dot vote. it's fucking extraordinary. my #19

odysseus (imago), Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:29 (ten years ago)

:D

space prophet wogan (ultros ultros-ghali), Tuesday, 16 February 2016 20:29 (ten years ago)

oh I'm lying, there was another KD way down. but this is IMO their crowning glory
