She's going from playing the big and higher profile Howard Theatre in Washington DC early last year to the tiny DC-9 rock club this March.

So glad she didn't name "Blow" as "Bleaux"

Both Richard and the audience fed off each other’s energy as the singer hopped through her discography, seemingly touched by the audience’s ecstatic reaction to every song, no matter how obscure. Focusing on the dancier side of her catalogue, Richard was a siren over propulsive grooves, synthesized melodies and waves of bass. She also dazzled with her dancing, balancing pneumatic contortions with sensuality.
― curmudgeon, Wednesday, 16 March 2016 14:50 (ten years ago)
I went to that; loved it. I had heard said about past shows that her performances had been kinda aimless or lackadaisical or something, but I didn't get that at all. She seemed totally committed (even though the 200-person club wasn't close to sold out) and sounded great. Crowd was great, too.
― dc, Wednesday, 16 March 2016 15:09 (ten years ago)
That room would be wall to wall people with 200 jammed into it. Probably wasn't sold out as that club usually just has obscure rock bands
― curmudgeon, Wednesday, 16 March 2016 16:04 (ten years ago)
I wish she would come to Seattle. The only time she was supposed to (circa Goldenheart), it got canceled.
― Hey (Extended Mix), Thursday, 17 March 2016 11:20 (ten years ago)
as far as I can tell, this et aliae/Dawn track was never posted here, and it's quite pleasant.

― curmudgeon, Tuesday, 29 March 2016 20:29 (ten years ago)
great interview! glad it's all finally happening in terms of critical attention at least
there's been quite a lot to be suspicious of aesthetically recently (...the name change) but otoh "dance", "hollywould" and "not above that" are all fucking great. also she's working with jimmy edgar??? i hope there's no tuning down of anything, i hope it's the rawest house banger he can do
― cher guevara (lex pretend), Wednesday, 30 March 2016 11:00 (ten years ago)
in june she's coming to portugal and i will see her live for the first time. i still can't believe it will happen.

I have no idea what this is on about, but you probably do:http://www.theverge.com/2016/4/18/11451170/first-youtube-360-video-live-stream-date-dawn-richard-verge

At one point she was scheduled to play in Minneapolis two days ago. Weird now to imagine what that would've been like.

This is beautiful...so smooth and introspective and much more pared-back than Blackheart. That said, I've come away feeling massively depressed. There's a lot of hopelessness in these lyrics and no soaring, triumphant tracks to take the edge off (a la Phoenix, Warriors etc). I'm fine with bleak, but this is crushingly so. Even 'How I Get It', which is ostensibly empowering in and of itself (and probably my favourite here), feels very sad sandwiched between these two songs about relationship futility. What I'm saying sounds like nonsense...obviously art shouldn't only be coming from a good place, and it's probably just the mood I am in right now, but there's an undercurrent here that I find utterly stultifying.
― propaganda for the American springtime (tangenttangent), Monday, 9 May 2016 11:55 (ten years ago)
The EP really clicked on the third time through for me. I don't hear it as hopeless, really -- it ends with baptism. I think it's pretty clearly a set-up for the album. But it's a nice little mood piece on its own.

― Jeff W, Friday, 13 May 2016 18:55 (ten years ago)
love "not above that" a ton but it took a while to get to that point; "wake up" sounds like it could follow the same path. not into the ep at all, airless and dry like everything kingdom's done for years now, but i guess i'm fine with a minor whiteout-style thing to hold us over to the actual album
― cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 13 May 2016 18:58 (ten years ago)
who's seeing dawn at berghain http://berghain.de/event/1629
― just sayin, Friday, 27 May 2016 07:33 (ten years ago)
I am. very much looking forward to it.
― fffv, Friday, 27 May 2016 14:52 (ten years ago)
berghain huh!
― cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 27 May 2016 14:53 (ten years ago)
it's in Kantine am Berghain not Berghain proper. small building adjacent to Berghain is more accurate, but it's a decent enough place to see a show.
― fffv, Friday, 27 May 2016 16:14 (ten years ago)
That FACT AOTY could be the worst thing to happen to Dawn if she starts deliberately pandering to that audience. WAY too soon to give up and go full #cassiefanclub on us.
― Matt DC, Friday, 27 May 2016 16:37 (ten years ago)
if one was actually going to be concerned that SHE KNOWS NERDS ARE LISTENING OH NO surely that time would have come well before Blackheart
― some dude, Friday, 27 May 2016 16:50 (ten years ago)
Depends on the kind of nerd.
― Matt DC, Friday, 27 May 2016 16:57 (ten years ago)
d triangle wn is already pandering full-bore but the music's still pretty good
― cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 27 May 2016 17:00 (ten years ago)
'pandering' is a strong word but yeah. if she was just making Keri Hilson songs to begin with we wouldn't have gotten here, but i'm just generally weary of 'the wrong kind of success will spoil their once pure artistic expression' meta anxiety.
― some dude, Friday, 27 May 2016 17:08 (ten years ago)
'Success' is a pretty strong word in this context but collaborating with Night Slugs landfill is going to lead to some pretty boring music.
― Matt DC, Friday, 27 May 2016 17:28 (ten years ago)
oh we nearly on my page yet.

That's pretty excellent, in a spacey way. I think I like her sonics as much as her songwriting.
― A nationally known air show announcer/personality (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 9 June 2016 04:29 (ten years ago)
Definitely, her visuals too. Just a great aesthetic all around.
― albvivertine, Thursday, 9 June 2016 04:34 (ten years ago)
did anyone see her in london? i'm going to see her tonight in lisbon and i can't really believe that this will happen.
― Nourry, Thursday, 16 June 2016 13:42 (ten years ago)
yeah she was really amazing, even better than last time. exultant energy start to finish, a really surprising setlist inc "meteors" and "james dean". still in awe of her pulling off "calypso" live. (she only did "calypso", "blow" and "titans" off blackheart!)
― the hallouminati (lex pretend), Thursday, 16 June 2016 13:51 (ten years ago)
she's releasing so much stuff these days it's hard to keep up but i'm really into "lemonade lakes"

i don't think i can get the virtual reality video for "not above that" to work properly though
i guess she plays a lot of new stuff. i would really love to see her play 'black lipstick'...
― Nourry, Thursday, 16 June 2016 14:02 (ten years ago)
oh yeah extended version of "dance" that stretched the outro out to the proper drumming frenzy it should've been on record
― the hallouminati (lex pretend), Thursday, 16 June 2016 14:05 (ten years ago)
saw a small clip of the virtual reality video on Dawn's Instagram. Nice
― curmudgeon, Thursday, 16 June 2016 14:19 (ten years ago)
"Black Lipstick" is still probably my favorite song of hers
― Get Me Bodied (Extended Mix), Thursday, 16 June 2016 22:33 (ten years ago)

Sometimes I think it’d be better if I could cater to art and stick to art. But then I wouldn’t be the CEO either. I like being in charge
