i used to dig a band called bloodthorn from france. mind you that was about 10 years ago.
― Charlie Howard, Friday, 10 April 2009 09:01 (seventeen years ago)
shit, bloodthorn are norwegian. i sure got that wrong.
― Charlie Howard, Friday, 10 April 2009 09:12 (seventeen years ago)
antaeus is some interesting french black metal, i found
― Charlie Howard, Friday, 10 April 2009 09:16 (seventeen years ago)
we should try and compile a list of some of the greatest black metal tracks. listening to certain black metal albums in their entirety tend to leave me a bit drained these days, whereas standout individual tracks can still blow me away/take me to that other place etc.
some winners:
satytricon - mother northemperor - with strength i burnburzum - det som en gang varborknagar - the dawn of the endenslaved - vetranottsummoning - the glory disappears
― Charlie Howard, Friday, 10 April 2009 09:32 (seventeen years ago)
Start with Weakling and Wolves In The Throne Room. That's safe stuff and also many non-bm peoples bands its ok to like.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 10 April 2009 10:42 (seventeen years ago)
Deathspell Omega are required listening for anyone with an interest in heavy music
also Darkspace (crazy and pretty good if long-winded Swiss sci-fi BM group) have no sort of agenda beyond "shit the universe is terrifying"
also Xasthur is some sort of genius, plz lay hold

When you're ok with all that, listen to every Ulver album, in chronological order, in one sitting :D
― a steak of romanticism (country matters), Friday, 10 April 2009 10:50 (seventeen years ago)
Also check out the Alcest EP Le Secret. (the album is shoegaze metal but the ep is BM)
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 10 April 2009 10:57 (seventeen years ago)
That's an awesome interview with DsO btw! And take it from me: they're not just intellectual gnostics, they're *insanely good* musicians who have a wonderful approach to composition.
― a steak of romanticism (country matters), Friday, 10 April 2009 11:28 (seventeen years ago)
maybe this will be the year i'll get into black metal. quite like what xasthur ive heard. like a big dirty whirlwind of sound. its like heroin metal. but i really like the punky end of things like Vordr and Bone Awl. any suggestions?
― Michael B, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 14:04 (seventeen years ago)
Can't help you out on punk influenced BM, though Darkthrone might be a good start.
If you're liking Xasthur, you should D/L the early Mutiilation albums, a definite influence and raw as hell.
― Soukesian, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 19:14 (seventeen years ago)
I think Ildjarn invented that Vordr/Bone Awl style
― Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 19:56 (seventeen years ago)
theres a hell of a lot of this stuff on youtube. Ildjarn seem to be like raw bone awl type stuff to the track below which is like super sleek wind tunnel metal.

Dude looks like Billy Corgan!

The negative reviews on metal-archives are hilarious, and the sheer size of his discography is intimidating, but Zarach Baal Tharagh is as punk as fuck, and his myspace is as good as any place to start:

― Soukesian, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 21:42 (seventeen years ago)
Ooh, good revive. I've never heard Vordr or Ildjarn before. Stuff is pretty badass.
― circa1916, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 22:50 (seventeen years ago)
All my black-metal buddies are freaking out about Marblebog from Hungary right now. And I can't say I blame them.

Sorry for not making that a live link but I know you can make it work.
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 10 June 2009 08:57 (seventeen years ago)
Thanks for the recommendations - gonna check out Zarach Baal Tharagh & Marblebog now!
― Colonel Poo, Thursday, 11 June 2009 11:35 (seventeen years ago)
btw you guys would probably like Ganzmord - Monolithic In Darkness
― Colonel Poo, Friday, 10 July 2009 14:19 (sixteen years ago)
Ganzmord have a 7" release on the AT WAR WITH FALSE NOISE label, out of Glasgow, who also have an album by Zarach Baal Tharagh and many others.
― Soukesian, Friday, 10 July 2009 14:48 (sixteen years ago)
ganzmord got really mad at me once. what a twit. i dared to give him a great review! still like his stuff though.
― scott seward, Friday, 10 July 2009 15:28 (sixteen years ago)
he also got mad that the people who put out his record - blackmetal.com - would dare to try and SELL his record. You know, promote it. dude, your label is a STORE! hahaha, i got a kick out of that.
― scott seward, Friday, 10 July 2009 15:33 (sixteen years ago)
he hates Decibel too.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 10 July 2009 16:18 (sixteen years ago)
i would hate decibel too if i were him. i'd hate everything. i mean, duh, that's the point.

Liturgy score major BM points for namechecking Gerard Grisey, surely the most Tr0o and kVlt figure in the world modern composition: Compose a complex suite about death involving ancient Babylonian texts, then drop dead unexpectedly - beat that!
― Soukesian, Friday, 10 July 2009 17:37 (sixteen years ago)
Listening to those Liturgy on the myspace site again last night. Damn good stuff, really should acquire the CD. Thanks for the tip, Whiney.
― Soukesian, Sunday, 12 July 2009 14:49 (sixteen years ago)
Liturgy is great. 20 Buck Spin is putting out the new album this year. Great guys. Great tunes. Definitely pushes some boundaries that need to be pushed.
― Nate Carson, Sunday, 12 July 2009 19:59 (sixteen years ago)
I would like to talk about Darkspace III.
― One idiot even called me "redcoat" because I'm (country matters), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 01:52 (sixteen years ago)
I am listening to it for the first time right now and it is monumental. Surely one of the best metal albums of recent years.
― One idiot even called me "redcoat" because I'm (country matters), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 01:53 (sixteen years ago)
I revived a stupid thurston bore thread to talk abt it, but I've been really liking the 2nd Malkuth LP! NY black metal that is very good imo.
― ian, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 02:17 (sixteen years ago)
cheers for the heads-up, will check out
― One idiot even called me "redcoat" because I'm (country matters), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 02:19 (sixteen years ago)
Totally agree about Darkspace III. I is almost on the same level, II is more ambient, but still essential. They play occasional festival dates, and I'd love to see them live. Stage shots show them backlit and rigged out something like the cenobites from Hellraiser. I'm sure the sound is like falling into a black hole.
Check out mainman Tobias Mockl's long standing solo project Paysage D'Hiver - similar epic feel, but super raw and experimental. Genius!
― Soukesian, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 08:04 (sixteen years ago)
Wow.

AWESOME! They make me think of Phillipe Druillet's acid-head space opera comics from Metal Hurlant. Hadn't clicked that the bass player is a woman. (Well, a female alien, anyway.)
Here's a long, cold blast of Paysage D'Hiver:

loving the darkspace video - they should look ridiculous but instead are totally compelling!
― squirrelbait, Friday, 31 July 2009 17:37 (sixteen years ago)
The video sound is OK, but doesn't do the records justice - they're IMMENSE!
― Soukesian, Friday, 31 July 2009 17:52 (sixteen years ago)
^ OTM
― StanM, Friday, 31 July 2009 17:54 (sixteen years ago)
Just got hold of Liturgy's "Renihilation". Five tracks in, and I'm totally floored.
― Soukesian, Thursday, 27 August 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)
lots of people wont listen to them due to their description of "indie black metal"
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 27 August 2009 21:02 (sixteen years ago)
What were they thinking? The music is the real deal, tho.

― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 27 August 2009 21:52 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, I dig on Liturgy. Main dude (or at least the one who brings the record to the shop) is super nice & mellow.
― ian, Thursday, 27 August 2009 21:56 (sixteen years ago)
I have to concur with all above. Liturgy is great and Hunter is a total sweetheart. Happy to say I had a hand in helping get him his latest label deal :)
― Nate Carson, Thursday, 27 August 2009 23:34 (sixteen years ago)
hey dudes, has there been a striborg album consisting entirely of his creepy ambient keyboard pieces yet?
― HURL CROCKERY AT THE MOSQUE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 28 August 2009 10:57 (sixteen years ago)
I don't think so, but who can keep up? There's an ambient number on the DVD set to what looks like pure video feedback. I felt like my brain was melting and/or I was watching some sort of cult induction video.
― Soukesian, Friday, 28 August 2009 12:07 (sixteen years ago)
was waiting for the first tr00 metal dude to show up
