My mixed take from 2015--
I saw Dawn before a smallish 100 or so person crowd at the Howard Theatre. Dawn was full of energy, dancing and projecting her voice and chatting in between songs about Fat Tuesday (she is from New Orleans) her album and how she makes each gig different (NY had dancers). Some younger NY singer Alan Michael was down in DC & jumped onstage to duet with her on "86" and "Physical." One of her 3 keyboardists got jazzy at times, while the drummer was going for a Big eaasyish polyrhythmic funky thing. At times her model poses and tv reality show belting was a tad too much, and some rough sound at the beginning hurt a few cuts. She did most of the new album in her 1 hr & 15 minute set

Not Above That actually sounds like a Dawn Richard and Maya Vik collabo should sound. I definitely like this.

Both Richard and the audience fed off each other’s energy as the singer hopped through her discography, seemingly touched by the audience’s ecstatic reaction to every song, no matter how obscure. Focusing on the dancier side of her catalogue, Richard was a siren over propulsive grooves, synthesized melodies and waves of bass. She also dazzled with her dancing, balancing pneumatic contortions with sensuality.

I went to that; loved it. I had heard said about past shows that her performances had been kinda aimless or lackadaisical or something, but I didn't get that at all. She seemed totally committed (even though the 200-person club wasn't close to sold out) and sounded great. Crowd was great, too.
― dc, Wednesday, 16 March 2016 15:09 (eight years ago) link
That room would be wall to wall people with 200 jammed into it. Probably wasn't sold out as that club usually just has obscure rock bands
― curmudgeon, Wednesday, 16 March 2016 16:04 (eight years ago) link
I wish she would come to Seattle. The only time she was supposed to (circa Goldenheart), it got canceled.

great interview! glad it's all finally happening in terms of critical attention at least
there's been quite a lot to be suspicious of aesthetically recently (...the name change) but otoh "dance", "hollywould" and "not above that" are all fucking great. also she's working with jimmy edgar??? i hope there's no tuning down of anything, i hope it's the rawest house banger he can do

This is beautiful...so smooth and introspective and much more pared-back than Blackheart. That said, I've come away feeling massively depressed. There's a lot of hopelessness in these lyrics and no soaring, triumphant tracks to take the edge off (a la Phoenix, Warriors etc). I'm fine with bleak, but this is crushingly so. Even 'How I Get It', which is ostensibly empowering in and of itself (and probably my favourite here), feels very sad sandwiched between these two songs about relationship futility. What I'm saying sounds like nonsense...obviously art shouldn't only be coming from a good place, and it's probably just the mood I am in right now, but there's an undercurrent here that I find utterly stultifying.
― propaganda for the American springtime (tangenttangent), Monday, 9 May 2016 11:55 (eight years ago) link
The EP really clicked on the third time through for me. I don't hear it as hopeless, really -- it ends with baptism. I think it's pretty clearly a set-up for the album. But it's a nice little mood piece on its own.

love "not above that" a ton but it took a while to get to that point; "wake up" sounds like it could follow the same path. not into the ep at all, airless and dry like everything kingdom's done for years now, but i guess i'm fine with a minor whiteout-style thing to hold us over to the actual album

it's in Kantine am Berghain not Berghain proper. small building adjacent to Berghain is more accurate, but it's a decent enough place to see a show.

That FACT AOTY could be the worst thing to happen to Dawn if she starts deliberately pandering to that audience. WAY too soon to give up and go full #cassiefanclub on us.

if one was actually going to be concerned that SHE KNOWS NERDS ARE LISTENING OH NO surely that time would have come well before Blackheart

d triangle wn is already pandering full-bore but the music's still pretty good
― cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 27 May 2016 17:00 (eight years ago) link
'pandering' is a strong word but yeah. if she was just making Keri Hilson songs to begin with we wouldn't have gotten here, but i'm just generally weary of 'the wrong kind of success will spoil their once pure artistic expression' meta anxiety.
― some dude, Friday, 27 May 2016 17:08 (eight years ago) link
'Success' is a pretty strong word in this context but collaborating with Night Slugs landfill is going to lead to some pretty boring music.
