i just voted for 2 of em

i got a really big steen, and they need some really big zings (some dude), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 15:35 (ten years ago)

haven't voted yet but i find it fairly easy to go w/ ds2 even if i also listen to them together or jump back and forth between them

marcos, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 16:00 (ten years ago)

yeah i def rated DS2 highest, the other ones kinda feel like EPs to me

w/ thug barter 6 is an easy pick imo, i find ss1 less and less appealing as the year wrapped up, the shitty mastering and many dud tracks kind of ruins it for me even if there are some standouts. ss2 is wonderful though and i need to spend more time w/ it

marcos, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 16:02 (ten years ago)

I can compile an all-killer album from the three Future releases but none of them seem perfect. Guess I'll plump for DS2 although Beast Mode stands out as it has my favourite track on it.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 16:48 (ten years ago)

i understand how opinions work but the idea that anyone thinks DS2 (or Beast Mode or Monster) is better than 56 Nights kinda boggles my mind. all of them of plenty of great moments, but as an album, 56N is a good bit better than the rest imo.

to each his/her own, of course. i just don't get it.

alpine static, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 19:31 (ten years ago)

ds2 is the worst of em imo

lag∞n, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 20:09 (ten years ago)

specialy if u discount the dupes from the tapes

lag∞n, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 20:11 (ten years ago)

production is the best on it though

marcos, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 20:20 (ten years ago)

the mixing/mastering is maybe the best but not the production imo

lag∞n, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 20:21 (ten years ago)

just getting around to listening to all of these separately and beast mode> 56 nights> monster> ds2

een, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 20:27 (ten years ago)

well, that looks like Future's fucked for even being in the EOY.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Thursday, 7 January 2016 10:27 (ten years ago)

DS2 > monster > 56 nights >>> beast mode

cher guevara (lex pretend), Thursday, 7 January 2016 10:38 (ten years ago)

I think one of the albums (prob DS2) will get enough votes to make it onto the list, but I can hardly imagine that we'll cohere around one song to place onto the singles list.

Publications seem to focus on March Madness and I Serve the Base, but I know there's a lot of passion for Just Like Bruddas and Blood on the Money in these parts.

thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Thursday, 7 January 2016 11:06 (ten years ago)

Just Like Bruddas, followed by March Madness for me FWIW.

there's a reason "March Madness" is the song everyone loves off that tape, it's the only one not produced by Southside and the only one that doesn't sound like a variation on "Commas." Zaytoven has a sound too but Beast Mode feels way less monochromatic than 56 Nights to me.

some dude, Thursday, 7 January 2016 12:21 (ten years ago)

Yeah 56 Nights feels very one-note to me.

Sorry for the noob question, but if it's a collab with DJ Esco, what exactly is he doing on the album, if Southside produced the tracks?

canoon fooder (dog latin), Thursday, 7 January 2016 12:23 (ten years ago)

He's the dj, of course, aka the editor. Selecting the tracks and putting them together in a purposeful fashion, the Khaled way.

I hope this isn't too rude, but how much of an impact do you have on the creative side of Future's mixtapes? Are you like an executive producer helping keep the project cohesive?
Love your work with Future. Truly the coolest DJ in the world.

DJEscoDJ ESCO
That's not a rude question. You could say I'm the A&R.

Number None, Thursday, 7 January 2016 12:31 (ten years ago)

The one-note-ness of 56 Nights is actually what makes it work so well to me. It feels like a statement.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 7 January 2016 12:31 (ten years ago)

they're all quite one-note, but on DS2 the non-highlight tracks still feel like an essential part of the flow and the album whereas on 56N you just want to skip to the highlights (of which the highest is "no compadre" by a million miles)

cher guevara (lex pretend), Thursday, 7 January 2016 12:48 (ten years ago)

like, the amount of times i've pressed play on DS2 only intending to cherrypick my favs and ended up listening to the album all the way through...

flopson, Thursday, 7 January 2016 12:58 (ten years ago)

obligatory lol @ "by a million miles" - I know you were fishing for it.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 7 January 2016 13:07 (ten years ago)

the idea that 'no compadre' and 'trap gentleman' sound a lot alike is ridiculous

"No Compadre" is definitely an outlier of the Southside tracks. i'm not saying that every song on 56 Nights sounds like each other, i'm saying that in the context of the tape coming out right when "Commas" was blowing up, it sounds like fan service. "you like sirens? have we got sirens for you!"

some dude, Thursday, 7 January 2016 13:27 (ten years ago)

Those are some sirens though.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 7 January 2016 13:29 (ten years ago)

diminishing returns imo.

some dude, Thursday, 7 January 2016 13:30 (ten years ago)

just did some closer b2b listening at lunch. got through all of 56 Nights and the first bit of Beast Mode and there's just no contest - I much prefer Zaytoven's production to Southside's. It manages to keep itself understated but there's a lot more stuff going on, it remains melodic, moody and uplifting at the same time; p much everything I like about Just Like Bruddas.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Thursday, 7 January 2016 13:58 (ten years ago)

Yeah, Zaytoven is the best. That doesn't really take anything away from 56 Nights though.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 7 January 2016 14:06 (ten years ago)

The short runtime and the fact there are a few standout tracks (March Madness especially) stop it being boring, but ultimately I just found 56 Nights a relatively dry listen.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Thursday, 7 January 2016 14:09 (ten years ago)

march madness, trap niggas, and title track are the pretty much all i need from 56 nights at this point, the rest is pretty good but the sirens are very grating

marcos, Thursday, 7 January 2016 14:36 (ten years ago)

dog latin very much otm re zay too

marcos, Thursday, 7 January 2016 14:37 (ten years ago)

ide tracks. i'm not saying that every song on 56 Nights sounds like each other, i'm saying that in the context of the tape coming out right when "Commas" was blowing up, it sounds like fan service. "you like sirens? have we got sirens for you!"

― some dude, Thursday, 7 January 2016 13:27 (6 hours ago) Permalink

It's "fan service" to make a sonically cohesive mixtape now?

Lots of records used the "commas" siren on tons of mixtapes, it was a blueprint like a smaller scale version of a mustard beat

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 7 January 2016 19:55 (ten years ago)

just no one ever say "fan service" again plz

lag∞n, Thursday, 7 January 2016 19:57 (ten years ago)

are producers besides Southside biting the sirens already? so far i've only just heard him use it a bunch of times. "Trap Nas" and Meek's "Check" and a few other tracks are pretty undeniable but i really wish he'd just let it be the signature of "Commas," it's not really something i wanna hear on a hundred different songs.

some dude, Thursday, 7 January 2016 20:39 (ten years ago)

Beast Mode is sonically cohesive, 56 Nights is monochromatic is how i break it down

some dude, Thursday, 7 January 2016 20:40 (ten years ago)

"dry" and "monochromatic" is why I like 56 Nights the best, tbh. though maybe the words i'd choose would be "bleak" and "concise"

also...

like, the amount of times i've pressed play on DS2 only intending to cherrypick my favs and ended up listening to the album all the way through

^^ exact opposite for me

alpine static, Thursday, 7 January 2016 21:41 (ten years ago)

i almost always skip groupies, lil one, & freak hoes

marcos, Thursday, 7 January 2016 21:42 (ten years ago)
