Mastodon's first and third albums are terrible and boring. Leviathan and Crack the Skye are brilliant. The last two are a mixed bag; I don't like either one much, but they've each got enough good songs to be worth keeping around.

i think i like the songs on this record but it sounds like shit, at least on spotify. does the cd sound better? like muddy and tinny at the same time

my vinyl sounds a lot better than my autorip mp3s, no idea about the CD but I expect it will too.

some bands mentioned in this thread: kansas, drive by truckers, qotsa, foo fighters, trail of dead, burning airlines, thrice, black album-metallica.

which kinda sums up why i don't dig this kinda thing. i would never listen to any of that stuff.

if this album did sound like a combination of queen, thin lizzy, and trans am - also mentioned - i would probably like it a lot more.

i would totally buy a nu-alice album if all the songs sounded like that one but i know that there are probably tedious 9 minute long epic trudges on nu-alice albums too. without really knowing. and epic inscrutable 90's grunge-metal videos to go along with them probably.

i did like one baroness album. probably the first one. i got bored of kylesa too. i had high hopes for them.

I never knew much beyond the radio hits but I bought one of those Original Album Classics boxes with the first five albums on CD (remastered with bonus tracks) for $20 last year and was blown away by the stealth-Christian-rock arena-prog awesomeness. Organ and electric violin everywhere you look.

I used to listen to the best-of, Monolith , and Leftoverture a bunch in high school

I have never heard a full Kansas album, I'd do it.

Reminds me of Cave In's "Jupiter" in terms of both sound and how it's being received.

I guess after being totally sold on nu-Torche after Restarter (still a 2015 favorite), I was prepared to like this scrubbed-up version of Baroness, but can't get with the vocals at all. "Shock Me" sounds like Pyromania era Def Leppard and that's when it doesn't sound like Nickelback.

That said, drumming on this thing is pretty fuckin' serious.

This album is incredibly catchy.
