Here's the Music Japan episode with tricot performing http://www.miomio.tv/watch/cc252541/
It's quite bizarre seeing them with Morning Musume and Sexy Zone, E-Girls and Perfume. Credit goes to the producers I guess - as far as I know tricot is still only signed to their self-made indie label.

I really loved THE, but AND has a dense surface of hyperkinetic chops that I just bounce off. Maybe they have ascended to the stratosphere and my ageing brain is left behind, although I listen to a lot of Autechre and feel it's quite straightforward.
― MatthewK, Monday, 14 December 2015 06:22 (ten years ago)
Maybe it's because I heard it first but I prefer A N D over T H E and the rest of the stuff I've heard, even though everyone tells me they're better. So many hooks.

this is such an odd mix of modern pop and like "signed to thrill jockey in 97" vibes
― Amira, Queen of Creativity (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 21 December 2015 21:55 (ten years ago)
So good live! So glad I managed to make it out for them.

I'm really regretting not hearing A N D before making up my albums ballot from this year. It's really great.

Had every intention of seeing them but someone must've turned up the gravity on my sofa.

<3 it, but i don't think it's going to supplant oyasumi from playing endlessly in my head

oh i totally missed this ep. it rules
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 8 December 2016 21:38 (nine years ago)
it really do. those first 2 tracks have to be the most inspiring seven minutes of 2016
― r|t|c, Thursday, 8 December 2016 21:49 (nine years ago)
also think the last track is my new fav tricot song

Hope it's better than singles/EPs they put out after AND, I thought they were a but formulaic. I'm probably still apparently the only person to prefer AND to THE though so I might just have wrong opinions on this band
― ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 9 February 2017 14:28 (nine years ago)
Looking forward to it, hoping for a European tour.
In the meantime Tricot-influenced Hong Kong group GDJYB just put out a very good album.

I haven't really been blown away by any of the new stuff I've heard off this; I will still probably get it and enjoy it well enough though. And to be genre pedant for a minute I really don't think the math-rock tag has ever really applied, especially not now they're essentially a decent pop-rock band with the occasional time signature change.
― ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 20 April 2017 15:54 (nine years ago)
ya never rly considered tricot math
they have mathy moments but go back to almost standard rock/j-rock
always dug lite if we're talking j math rock
― i n f i n i t y (∞), Thursday, 20 April 2017 16:48 (nine years ago)
Yeah, Lite are good. I also recommend Nuito and Marmalade Butcher for anyone into that stuff
― ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 20 April 2017 17:46 (nine years ago)
album is on spotify rn
it's great
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 May 2017 15:10 (nine years ago)
XP - If anybody fancies a crash course in J Math stuff then you could do worse than check out this free compilation - https://feckingbahamas.bandcamp.com/album/i-japan
― MaresNest, Thursday, 18 May 2017 15:29 (nine years ago)
I really like "melon soda" and the "how to play" videos they posted for that one. Looking forward to digging into the LP
― calstars, Thursday, 18 May 2017 15:33 (nine years ago)
Nice one MaresNest, looks interesting
― ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 18 May 2017 15:34 (nine years ago)
fb do good work
they have a map of mathy bands on their site if anyone wants an intro
http://feckingbahamas.com/world-math
some not 100% math but it's a decent intro
― i n f i n i t y (∞), Thursday, 18 May 2017 15:50 (nine years ago)
Lot's of J Math (sorry) seems much less dissonant and overall prettier than it's western counterpart, I really like the bands that lean on the Piano as a central instrument like Atlantis Airport or Haisuinonasa

I always dig their clean no-frills production
― bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 21:09 (six years ago)
Really good record. Some really harsh/aggressive stuff, some really pretty stuff.
― but also fuck you (unperson), Thursday, 6 February 2020 00:23 (six years ago)
Really.
will this be the rock album that finally unites ILM
― bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 February 2020 00:40 (six years ago)
First half is great, but it got a bit too Math in the second half and lost me. (Rock isn’t generally my thing though. I was coming at this as a J Pop fan and knew nothing about the band hitherto.)
― Jeff W, Thursday, 6 February 2020 01:02 (six years ago)
I wrote a little bit more about the album.
― but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 11 February 2020 16:31 (six years ago)
Can't wait to dig into this. Post THE I felt they struggled to reach those old heights but the singles for this album have been super promising and made me a born again fan.
― abcfsk, Tuesday, 11 February 2020 20:36 (six years ago)
i play this album multiple times a day
― american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 February 2020 00:22 (six years ago)
I love this record.
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 13 February 2020 01:07 (six years ago)
I really liked their Fender-y light sound on the early stuff - the newer material is thicker and I can't lose myself in the interplay as much. I reckon it will improve once I've listened more, but unlike their previous albums this one's not on Bandcamp so I can't buy it very easily.
― an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Thursday, 13 February 2020 01:18 (six years ago)
Yeah, it's ironic that signing to a bigger label has likely improved their status in Japan, but handicapped them w/r/t growing their US audience. (The new record is on US Spotify, though.)
