Polish dudes more than a bit inspired by old Graveland, Veles and Infernum.

I think The Black Twilight Circle might be what you're looking for, that group of bands have very raw production values but not quite as blown-out and impenatrable as LLN.

This is like their 'starter pack'

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 9 December 2015 12:29 (ten years ago)

Cultes des Ghoules (yet more BM from Poland) released an EP this year with a great 15-min track (they excel at this), and have some of that LLN veiled-evil (along with lots of old Darkthrone too).

Dominique, Wednesday, 9 December 2015 14:20 (ten years ago)

Appreciate all the suggestions. I don't imagine there are many contemporary bands mining the old LLN territory but there's plenty of disgusting, raw bm in the air. Some recent favorites are:

Bekëth Nexëhmü (Sweden)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3IX-uOgJUs

Kêres (Finland)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13VOgh6E-T4

Asymmetry (USA/Finland)

Teitanblood (Spain)

Rhinocervs (USA)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_5MWLekZDs

Necrostrigis (Poland)

Akitsa (Canada)

Branikald (Russia) [older but essential]

https://malokarpatan.bandcamp.com/releases

Well this is pretty amazing. Sounds like Mutiilation playing extended Venom songs. Necro Wave of British Heavy Metal? Might apply to yelp's call for LLN type stuff (except they're from Slovakia).

Devilock, Friday, 18 December 2015 03:01 (ten years ago)

Wow, great find. I'm just hearing it now but Malokarpatan rips. I can see the through LLN through-line; Mutiilation vocals and Vlad Tepes riffs. Plus all the eastern bloc pagan folk elements. And going back to Veles upthread, they are incredible! I bought the cd off the youtube but the album is much more than I'd hoped for. I thought, based on their skin heads and jack boots, that they'd be more Polski meatheads a la Honor but no, the album is all Germs riffs, Xasthur vocals and Group Inerane drums. Hahaha, I'm sure I'm way off on that last bit. They're certainly in no way influenced by Tuareg desert rock from Niger but I like to hear it that way. It's all so fey and not tough at all. I love that kind of cognitive dissonance in black metal.

Yelploaf, Sunday, 20 December 2015 22:48 (ten years ago)

have we talked about babymetal yet?

black metal is emo for vikings (monster mash), Sunday, 20 December 2015 23:03 (ten years ago)

I think there's a thread devoted to them but I cant find it in search function.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 21 December 2015 00:15 (ten years ago)

Another one I've just stumbled upon and feel positively toward but am not sure I'll be listening to years from now so I'll post it here in the niche thread rather than the more general metal one:

Havukruunu
http://naturmachtproductions.bandcamp.com/album/havulinnaan-np061

Finnish but very Bathory inspired, much like Moonsorrow. Some cool heavy metalish riffs turn up every once in a while to take the burden off the pagan/folky jig stuff.

Malokarpatan is so fucking good

we salute you, our half-inflated dark lord (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 9 February 2016 13:46 (ten years ago)

Forgot about this thread. Stumbled upon some weirdness yesterday: chipper, celebratory, punky bedroom black metal that I've seen described as "music for the last day of school" and the image is perfect.

Glass Shrine:
https://youtu.be/KZ8DwbqhhFM

Apparently the guy is a fan of Lykathea Aflame, hence the major key approach.

(found on the NWN! forum, where there's a dedicated thread)

While I'm here, and speaking of NWN!, man I'd never heard of this Gnome thing. One man deal from Japan, totes kvlt, like Burzum or Xasthur but flips all the antisocial hostility for something enchanting and convivial. I mean yeah there's still the banshee wails coming from the treetops but the listening experience doesn't become a test of endurance. Almost sounds like a black metal version of oldest Katatonia sometimes. That one song, "The Forest," is something I'd take over many bands' whole discographies. Fucking out of this world.

https://psychedeliclotusorder.bandcamp.com/album/silent-scream

And that's the closest I've come to buying a turntable since actually owning one in the 80s-90s. I hope this thing makes it to CD.

Devilock, Tuesday, 9 February 2016 15:44 (ten years ago)

hey devilock, gnome is indeed amazing and on cd! check discogs.

Yelploaf, Tuesday, 9 February 2016 17:13 (ten years ago)

Huh, yeah, look at that. Looks like I'll be snagging one of those.

Also, Malokarpatan posted some art for upcoming tshirts.

I recommend just reading the thread at NWN. One of the band members has been posting regularly.

Never checked out that NWN forum before, but thanks to link found out about Archgoat show in March, just got tix \m/

Man this Ahpdegma album

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmzgHtkBvwM

It's so fucking strange, it takes me back to the golden age of weird, cheap-sounding, poorly-recorded genius. I've seen people refer to it as symphonic but the keys are all so fucked and kind of drunken sounding, like something out of a bizarre prog album that leaned more towards, I don't know, rock in opposition or something.

Seriously. It's so common to hear it well-produced and epic in presentation now I forget about the eccentric genius and a four track era.

While you may want to avoid any conversation that doesn't strictly involve music, the NWN! forum is where I go to learn about all the weird black and death metal that otherwise would slip through the cracks.

Devilock, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 20:40 (nine years ago)

I'm listening to an album by Manierisme right now 'cos they're related to the above Japanese weirdness, some of it sounds like lofi blackened JRPG themes (I mean that in a good way).

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 21:15 (nine years ago)

Oh and on a 'still weird but less questionable' tip I finally got round to hearing the massive Black Twilight Circle comp Tliltic Tlapoyauak which is two hours of brilliance

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 21:20 (nine years ago)

I slept on that Black Twilight stuff for a long time but have recently gotten into Volahn and Arizmenda, both kind of amazing.

That Ahpdegma sounds great

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 16 June 2016 21:34 (nine years ago)

Cool!

I think it's been discussed on the main metal thread but this Desert Dances and Serpent Sermons 4-way split on Ajna Offensive is fucking great. Four Black Twilight Circle bands playing black metal but I hear moments that remind of of the stereotypical Morricone Western soundtrack, Popol Vuh and weird European prog/psych. I think it's the best production any of those bands have had to date, too.

New Arizmenda tape, Beneath This Reality of Flesh, highly recommended for fans of Les Legions Noires, Lust (Canada), orthodox black metal laced with weirdness and smashed onto a cheap old cassette.

xpost - Where did you find it? Only 50 made and it's not listed on Crepusculo Negro. Thanks.

Yelploaf, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 18:50 (nine years ago)

Nécropole's first 2 demo tapes are now on cd via Northern Heritage. Essential!

Yelploaf, Thursday, 14 July 2016 00:36 (nine years ago)

xp I illegally downloaded it, actually (from M0rtuusInS0mn1s) - Arizmenda's Facebook had a link to the Bandcamp page but that appears to be gone and until I can pay for that or a physical copy... well, stealing it is.

Find it odd how deeply Mortiis into all the typical black metal fantasy and dungeon music but it seems unlikely he'd ever return to that. Of course lots of people change interests but it's just difficult for me to imagine how you'd leave in some cases.

I do enjoy both periods of his work, though I've never totally loved any of his 3 albums I got. Still amuses me how un-kvlt it is in "Parasite God" when he goes "hmmm-mmm-hmmm-mmm baby"

I'm currently obsessed with "Winter Howl" on the first Forest album. 20 minutes of meandering, clean guitars, sparse drums and distant, anguished vocals - not far off The Dead C's more plaintive moments. Can anyone identify other bands or songs that mine similar territory? Some of the weirder LLN stuff comes close, and maybe Circle of Ouroborus.

Yelploaf, Friday, 14 October 2016 17:08 (nine years ago)

Urfaust?

Siegbran, Friday, 14 October 2016 17:11 (nine years ago)

Haha, yes Urfaust is on the nose.

Yelploaf, Friday, 14 October 2016 17:14 (nine years ago)

Anyone else heard the new Darkthrone yet? Bit disappointed tbh. It sounds so 'clean', production wise. Made me put on Xasthur and Lurker of Chalice for ~trve black metal feels~

the tightening is plateauing (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 14 October 2016 20:00 (nine years ago)

I love Darkthrone's "production" lately. I wouldn't call it clean or dirty, it's just an honest plug-in-and-play sound.

punksishippies, Friday, 14 October 2016 22:41 (nine years ago)

I love the new Darkthrone, reaches back to Panzerfaust which is just fine with me. Still sounds dank enough to my ears.

I'm currently obsessed with "Winter Howl" on the first Forest album. 20 minutes of meandering, clean guitars, sparse drums and distant, anguished vocals

I'll have to think about it, but just wanted to say how much I love this track - used to play this on my radio show next to Krautrock, NZ noise, whatever, it's like ur-music.
