J0rdan S., Sunday, 29 November 2015 19:01 (eight years ago) link

da connect album was released 12 years ago so it makes sense.

ANU (sisilafami), Sunday, 29 November 2015 19:19 (eight years ago) link

Future never had the air of a 20-year-old kid when he was coming up, it makes sense to me that he was 26-27 when he started getting famous, like Jay-Z or Nicki Minaj

best future social media content was that vid of the guy and his gf sitting in the car booming a future tune out the stereo and she's looking dead at the camera totally expressionless with just her head bobbing in amazingly hypnotic fashion

does anyone know what i mean cos i can't find it now

r|t|c, Monday, 30 November 2015 00:45 (eight years ago) link

two weeks pass...

So I like DS2 fine and should probably re listen to the mixtapes but I feel out of the loop as to why this is supposed to be another level from his earlier stuff. Even Honest which I don't like, "I Be U" is more my level than any of his current stuff.

nova, Sunday, 20 December 2015 08:31 (eight years ago) link

naw, I feel p much the same

Genuinely glad

albvivertine, Sunday, 20 December 2015 13:16 (eight years ago) link

'i be u' is a love song & more a pop song than a rap one

its probably become a meme at this pt but it doesnt surprise me that this stuff resonated more, bc it has the trappings of more autobiographical tortured soul vibe than aiming for more 'universal' vibes

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 20 December 2015 20:46 (eight years ago) link

i listened to 'honest' the album recently and def feel it's worlds apart from his current run idk

, Sunday, 20 December 2015 20:52 (eight years ago) link

I don't really care about Future's tortured soul. "I Be U" > anything he's done this year

boring alt-reality reverend (The Reverend), Sunday, 20 December 2015 21:11 (eight years ago) link

ur missing out rev

lag∞n, Monday, 21 December 2015 01:56 (eight years ago) link

"I Be U" was really good but even that was a step down from "Turn On The Lights" and his other really top shelf ballads imo

i got a really big steen, and they need some really big zings (some dude), Monday, 21 December 2015 01:59 (eight years ago) link

p much everything in the world is a step down from turn on the lights

lag∞n, Monday, 21 December 2015 02:01 (eight years ago) link

I really just find the feel of his recent work repelling and unenjoyable at more than a song or two's length.

boring alt-reality reverend (The Reverend), Monday, 21 December 2015 02:14 (eight years ago) link

its so good

lag∞n, Monday, 21 December 2015 02:22 (eight years ago) link

i totally love the recent stuff but I'm starting to max out a little and am curious to see where he goes next & whether I'll feel on board. I barely listened to the drake mixtape even though most of the future stuff on it was pretty much in the same vein as most of these tapes. hearing that jumpman line like "had em like wow, cup dirty" gave me a little glimpse of like feeling tired out on future

marcos, Monday, 21 December 2015 03:20 (eight years ago) link

i like what he's doing w/ different tapes w/ different producers -- he hasn't done much w/ Mike Will in a while so i'm looking forward to Ape Shit more than if it was just gonna be produced by all the same people from his recent tapes

i got a really big steen, and they need some really big zings (some dude), Monday, 21 December 2015 03:49 (eight years ago) link

xpost - i dont care at all about future's tortured soul either. i know people like noz like to claim drake is self serving/self congratulatory, and future's narcissism is more genuine, and so genuinely tortured that he can barely contain his self loathing, but they both just seem two sides of the same self consciously pained, slightly boring, self-pitying, but ultimately shallow (and sometimes repellent - though not as much a ty dolla sign) persona. i prefer future when he just gets on with making bangers like most of whats on DS2, where the im so drunk/sad quality of his voice is couched in not-so sad-sack beats. i dont care to hear him trying to make ballads that might be 'honest' but just reveal someone quite odious. that aside, i think the second half of 56 nights is pretty fantastic, no compadre especially.

StillAdvance, Monday, 21 December 2015 16:50 (eight years ago) link

wow talk about slightly boring

lag∞n, Monday, 21 December 2015 16:59 (eight years ago) link

Rev can i respectfully say you are so damn wrong. i liked "turn off the lights" future too, possibly more (at its peak) but this is just a new different but also really good thing

flopson, Monday, 21 December 2015 17:18 (eight years ago) link

took me a little while to get into it

flopson, Monday, 21 December 2015 17:19 (eight years ago) link

new stuff is like a slow burn ... you have to immerse yourself in it and enter the world it creates to really enjoy i think. feels very direct, too. uncut future.

pre millennial tension (uptown churl), Monday, 21 December 2015 20:24 (eight years ago) link

I don't only think ballad/sensitive Future is good ftr, just reading some year-end write ups reminded me that others are getting something out of his recent stuff that I haven't

i dont agree w/ either statement...hes grown tremendously in certain ways imo

it seems like, objectively speaking, future is currently peaking

I agree he's doing something new and different, just that it doesn't interest me and that's ok.

boring alt-reality reverend (The Reverend), Tuesday, 22 December 2015 00:01 (eight years ago) link

"future backlash in full swing smh when did ppl forget how to feel"

lol really I want to like it more, whenever something reaches that level of acclaim/popularity I feel I'm missing out on something if I'm not feeling it as much. And with Future I'm a fan, it's not like select other rappers where I'm just curious if their new stuff'll win me over.

nova, Tuesday, 22 December 2015 02:29 (eight years ago) link

tbh i'm surprised there hasn't been more division over future's direction; i know the romantic space balladry wasn't the sum total of his work previously but so much of his reputation was built on people buying into it, and this nihilistic unpleasant new future doesn't just contradict it but actively seeks to kill it

i think i'm more into future's latest music because it doesn't ask us to care about his soul, it's just tunnel vision numbness. i think i was too cynical to fully buy into romantic future even if he's now in the face of it more indefensible

cher guevara (lex pretend), Tuesday, 22 December 2015 09:00 (eight years ago) link

future peaked with 'racks' let's be honest
