six months pass...

about to listen to a review copy of the new album, was like "hey wonder what ilx thinks about this dude" and hoooooooooooooly bejesus lol, did not know hynes was a cause of such contention.

i can /sorta/ see why people think it's the dreaded hipsterrnb but more than anything else the motivation behind that line of thinking m/l boils down to "urban outfitters locations have played his songs before." anyway, carly rae jepsen is featured on a track! excited to check this out.

stoked 4 this

lag∞n, Saturday, 25 June 2016 19:20 (nine years ago)

it's good. somewhat uneven, and so anyone who's annoyed by the pastiche aspect of his arrangements will find that aesthetic in full flight here. but a lot of fun imo. "sandra's smile" isn't on it, which is odd considering how prominent sociopolitical concerns are throughout the record

cupid deluxe is a really good record

J0rdan S., Saturday, 25 June 2016 20:41 (nine years ago)

cupid deluxe is pretty good but the way he always uses completely static drum loops is frustrating

ufo, Saturday, 25 June 2016 21:38 (nine years ago)

i fn love cupid deluxe

NY Times writer Jon Caramanica hangs out with Hynes at various NY locations--studios, parks, the ballet, uptown, east village,

curmudgeon, Monday, 27 June 2016 15:58 (nine years ago)

i tried to read that but it was too much "new york is a mysterious mistress"

lag∞n, Monday, 27 June 2016 16:10 (nine years ago)

tru

lag∞n, Monday, 27 June 2016 17:08 (nine years ago)

damn... That caramanica profile a brutal hit by the cringe-mafia

imo to like this guy's music is to have a crush on him but reading someone so in thrall to a flâneur-type is weird cuz they paint the most banal activities as some rarefied shit, like 'he sits in parks... plays sports... walks the streets... pays for tickets to the ballet... and he has Unlocked The Secret To The City Of New York"

also lol at this

That sort of engagement feels almost antiquated, a product of an older time when place was something close to destiny. That’s no longer the case. It is less essential than ever, in this time of easy mobility of ideas and internet-driven transnational fame, for an artist to identify with one spot in the world. To be, in essence, local.

being immediately followed by 'oh and his snapchat is the bomb'

de l'asshole (flopson), Monday, 27 June 2016 20:26 (nine years ago)

dev just ~surprise-dropped~ the new album, it's available across all platforms

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 00:51 (nine years ago)

oh damn "E.V.P." and "Desirée" are sooooo good, definitely feeling this

ha i just reread this whole thread and its so good

lag∞n, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 16:01 (nine years ago)

Jesus, that Caramanica piece. That's what a Harvard education will buy you, I guess. "When friends like Florence Welch have concerts, he goes." Really living the NYC life to the max there.

Man this album is so fine. 'But You' has the most lush chorus Garth Greenside hasn't written in years.

kinda uneven sounding to me.

curmudgeon, Friday, 1 July 2016 13:47 (nine years ago)

i dont' like this nearly as much as the last one, on first listen, but it might be a grower. I also haven't listened to it intently, just put it on in the house

akm, Friday, 1 July 2016 18:12 (nine years ago)

Don't really get the hype around this one

yesca, Friday, 1 July 2016 18:17 (nine years ago)

tricked into listening to some mediocre wispy pop thanks to a Carly Rae Jepsen feature, gutted

boxedjoy, Saturday, 2 July 2016 08:56 (nine years ago)

I can't get into this yet. On "Augustine" he sounds even duller than Solange.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 2 July 2016 14:25 (nine years ago)

i love the single. chorus is very tame impala. though the whole thing could have been released in 1986 apart from the 90s R&B breaks.

This is a lovely-sounding record that could use more actual songs.

rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Friday, 8 July 2016 20:14 (nine years ago)

can goon be tempted out of his poochie-ass lair of irony vibes to offer an opinion on this or is the brand 2 strong

This album is good. I think the Pitchfork review way back when is pretty OTM slotting it in alongside the D'Angelo and Kendrick. It's not about songs as such but moods and themes. I think.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 23 September 2016 15:00 (nine years ago)

It's growing on me a bit, but still wish some of the songs tunes were as impressive as the moods, themes and what he seems to be going for.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 16:43 (nine years ago)

Saw him last week.I took a friend who went in blind, and at first all the '80s style appropriation turned him off, but by the end he was pretty convinced. It's just delivered as this weird contrast of a really talented, compelling, confident guy playing and singing like he's still insecure and trying to figure things out, as an aesthetic, which comes off a little off-kilter and incomplete. But again, by design.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 17:51 (nine years ago)

guess he has some music on the imminent solange album

oof i cringed a little when i read that review, seemed like such a cheap and easy critical move to do just bc of some political vocal samples. i love this album but i really don't see it in the same vein as the BM or TBAP, it is very different, honestly i don't even view BM in the same vein as TBAP other than major albums w/ some persona/political themes by black americans?

marcos, Monday, 31 October 2016 20:21 (nine years ago)
