niels, Thursday, 19 November 2015 12:49 (ten years ago)

The Christmas Poll

how's life, Thursday, 19 November 2015 12:58 (ten years ago)

ouch, how can this not sound corny?

Sharkie, Thursday, 19 November 2015 13:15 (ten years ago)

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 19 November 2015 13:34 (ten years ago)

decent poll! it's down to wham vs. mariah for me too (of the tracks that appear on those cd collections)

niels, Thursday, 19 November 2015 14:28 (ten years ago)

All I Want For Christmas is a true jam, although I think I must have been the vote for 2000 Miles.

how's life, Thursday, 19 November 2015 14:30 (ten years ago)

also great, and a bit atypical in that it's an album cut christmas song (or whatever they call that)

I don't think I'll listen to any christmas songs before December, but first thing I'm giving a listen is this

the crj "last christmas" cover is great, totally crystalline, tons of saxophone, kinda r&b in the way it moves

Crystalline saxophone sounds reassuring.

Hahaha well it does sound corny but it's actually not that awful considering the source. Funk bass and sax make it stand out.

Still XMAS albums will never be a wise career move.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 20 November 2015 20:44 (ten years ago)

I still think the Wham version is the definite pop cover of the song, though.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 20 November 2015 20:46 (ten years ago)

Actually I was thinking about XMAS albums that aren't that bad and I remembered the LOW christmas one. It's probably my favorite one of the bunch I've heard. They seem as excited for xmas as I am every year.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 20 November 2015 20:50 (ten years ago)

the wham version is the original. no evidence that she's releasing a christmas album

Still XMAS albums will never be a wise career move.

Can be incredibly lucrative though. Think Mariah's 'All I Want For Christmas' has earned well over $50m in royalties and Slade's Holder & Lea share over £500k each and every year.

you're right! I thought it was a cover but I think that about every xmas song I ever hear. Most are so overplayed they feel like centuries old to me.

I thought the CRJ was a full album. If it's a one or two song thing then it's awesome and the way everyone should do it. No need for full albums of half-assed xmas covers.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 20 November 2015 21:39 (ten years ago)

No need for full albums of half-assed xmas covers.

Well, other than padding an artist's bank account.

If by the next 10 years there is no sexy christmas EP by Miguel my life will be a huge disappointment.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 21 November 2015 04:16 (ten years ago)

ilx needs a proper christmas song poll imo

qualx, Saturday, 21 November 2015 21:37 (ten years ago)

Hmm, I don't remember that happening, but it's probably for the best because anything beating Darlene Love (even if it's "Christmas Wrapping" and it's only by 1 point) would have put me in a Grinchly way.

i don't remember that happening ilx needs a new christmas poll i can vote in imo

qualx, Sunday, 22 November 2015 05:31 (ten years ago)

this album's good. lots of the melodies redolent of tom petty, interestingly enough. is this a stated influence?

also, the second half is stronger

avant-garde, sissy bounce, zombie rave, aquacrunk, warlock, oceangrunge, (imago), Thursday, 26 November 2015 21:21 (ten years ago)

the petty thing especially coz when i listened to this on spotify it spilled over to the previous album which basically starts with 'learning to fly' unedited and uncredited afaia

avant-garde, sissy bounce, zombie rave, aquacrunk, warlock, oceangrunge, (imago), Thursday, 26 November 2015 23:11 (ten years ago)

you mean Tiny Little Bows = Learning to Fly? I mean, they have exactly the same chords but apart from that...

p.s. singing "Cupid, draw back your bow" over Learning to Fly is great, I'll admit to that

Sharkie, Sunday, 29 November 2015 17:15 (ten years ago)

i saw her sing last night

a++++++++++++

i estimate the audience was 60% gay men in their late 20s and early 30s, 20% female friends of those men, and 20% 'other' i.e. loners and er, me

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 8 December 2015 19:35 (ten years ago)

she didn't play "i know you have a girlfriend" but that was my only disappointment - she just has so few duds that pretty much every song banged, and the crowd was roaring every word. near the end some dude threw his santa hat up on stage, which carly rae caught with insouciant aplomb (of course) and donned for the rest of the song (i thought how annoyed the photographers must be that they'd had to clear off after song 3). hugest roar apart from CMM and IRLY probably for tiny little bows! ridic smiles on faces afterwards, felt like a rave

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 8 December 2015 19:47 (ten years ago)

I agree, my favourite gig of the year. My two friends who are big Carly fans couldn’t make it due to work, so I dragged along someone who didn’t know much of her stuff and he was definitely converted.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 8 December 2015 20:37 (ten years ago)

so rad she's part of noise pop

Finally, a Bay Area gig, yes! Although I could be swayed by the recently announced LA show at the Fonda. Is that a good venue?

Sushi and the Banchan (Spectrist), Wednesday, 9 December 2015 17:18 (ten years ago)

it was soooooooooo good

the extended cheers of appreciation after "your type" <3

uberweiss, Wednesday, 9 December 2015 18:30 (ten years ago)

enough time's passed

god tier imo: gimmie love, making the most of the night, your type, warm blood, i didn't just come here to dance into the first 30 seconds of favorite color, la hallucinations

very good songs: emotion, boy problems

songs i have trouble rating because of hype/too much listening before album release: run away with me, i really like you, all that

i like them ok but i usually skip them: let's get lost, black heart

bad songs imo: when i needed you, the rest of favorite color, la hallucinations

qualx, Friday, 11 December 2015 05:43 (ten years ago)

la hallucinations is the best, u r crazy

Spottie, Friday, 11 December 2015 05:47 (ten years ago)

i know

qualx, Friday, 11 December 2015 05:52 (ten years ago)

those are the wrong bad songs bc when i needed you is amaxing

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 11 December 2015 06:17 (ten years ago)

bad songs on this album = zero

art baengels (monotony), Friday, 11 December 2015 06:32 (ten years ago)

when I needed you sounds like a demo only diehard stans should know about, I have no idea what people find appealing about it

qualx, Friday, 11 December 2015 07:26 (ten years ago)

you're mental

Number None, Friday, 11 December 2015 07:33 (ten years ago)

I mean if you don't want to punch the air the first time she launches into "sometimes I wish that I could CHANGE" then idk

Number None, Friday, 11 December 2015 07:34 (ten years ago)

Carly Rae Jepsen. Fuck... This is what music is supposed to be. And, I'm not even Geir. Jeez.

groovypanda, Friday, 11 December 2015 08:54 (ten years ago)

Black Heart is pretty dud though

Sharkie, Friday, 11 December 2015 13:50 (ten years ago)

"when i needed you" is like a reengineered "you're not the one" and the lyric is crazy intricate for a love/breakup song imo

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 11 December 2015 15:52 (ten years ago)

yeah its totally YNTO! same drums and progression.

Spottie, Friday, 11 December 2015 16:41 (ten years ago)

idgi sorry. it is an unpleasantly boring song to me. the only part that isn't is the little "you come to me" bit. I can't get past the melody on the rest of it.

qualx, Friday, 11 December 2015 17:06 (ten years ago)

Black Heart was kind of my way in to this album, it's a great track but admittedly does the least service towards the album as a whole
