all of the songs about zayn hurt me a lot, especially "long way down"

I have a terrible copy that I heard enough last week to know I won't like it as much as Four. The songwriting done gone flat.

this is definitely less good than four (there are what, three fake beatles tracks and four ballads here?) but whatever i'm still emotionally devastated

A more good rewrite of "crush" would be the best song in the world, surely.

"walking in the wind" is probably the best "i know it's over but we'll find each other again" song ever, i have no idea how they know this much about my life

Only listened once but, aww man, I can already tell I'll never love this like I do Four. Maybe a better rip will help. I miss Zayn's melisma, the way he really dug into 1D's pretty standard melodies and pulled out complexity and soul.
That said, it's pretty consistently decent after one pass and "Perfect" and "Never Enough" are already all-timers

Ha -- for a while I've preferred 1D's album tracks to their singles.

'What a feeling' Is a obvious highlight for me. Kinda fireproof Pt.2
And although I've been reading that 'hey angel' Is a descendent from verve, to me it sounds a lot like robbie williams. But, as brad nelson wrote, I'm also emotionally devastated by this.
― Nourry, Monday, 9 November 2015 01:49 (eight years ago) link
Really warmed up to this more than I thought I would! I mean, it is not the miracle of Four but what is? "If I Could Fly" is a turd and TOTALLY Harry but I'll take it over "18"
Everything else is great, including all cheesy Beatle-isms and Tango-era Fleetwood Mac and Paul Simon bites

I like One Direction because when I hear them, when I look at them, I realize how quickly they will be gone. How quickly I will be gone and I feel very grateful to be here. One Direction is all brevity, tender flowers, a reminder of mortality, a reminder to live with joy. It's more that 1D reminds me I am going to die. Which of course, makes me a much better mom because, for me, at their shows, I feel certain nothing beside kindness matters when youth, life, beauty are so brief. 1D fills both my daughters and me with joy, with love. That comes back as kindness.

Bieber vs 1D was a question of who'd be #1 that week, not biggest sales week of the year, which Adele already has locked down off preorders alone.
that said, two of 1D's previous albums did more the first week than If You're Reading, so it's not out of the question at all.

I watched that James Corden carpool karaoke today - I've only ever listened to a few of the singles but I really do enjoy these blokes so I am diving into all of the albums. Four is my fave atm
Tim F nailed it way upthread -
Actually I feel like One Direction at their most rock are approaching Fall Out Boy at their most pop - the distance between "No Control" and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and "Miss Missing You" or "Where Did The Party Go?" seems pretty small to me.

My boyfriend rankings are1 Harry2 Louis/Zayn4 Liam5 Niall...but 5 should be like 10 because Niall gives me grody 5ive/East 17 vibes.
Harry is much cuter now that he has long hair. That mid-length curl was not good

Yeah, 'what a feeling' is probably the best song from made in am. It is right above from 'wolves', 'temporary fix', 'walking in the wind' (why did they insist to put their best songs as bonus tracks) and 'perfect'.

What a feelingWolvesTemporary fixWalking in the windPerfect OliviaNever enoughEnd of the dayI want to write you a songHey angelDrag me down HistoryAMLove you goodbyeLong way down If I could fly Infinity
― Nourry, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 03:12 (eight years ago) link
Why do you put Hey Angel in the middle? It's an easy #17 for me and I'm curious what it's defenders have to say that they like about it?
Also I'll be a lone defender of If I Could Fly rn i guess: I think its got a really well pieced together set of lyrics, great melody, everyone sounds super sincere on their lines, and the second to last chorus where all four of them take a line is just perfection. I can see that you guys clearly like fast 1D better than slow 1D, and If I Could Fly certainly is sappy, but I can't see why its so low in people's opinions here
― MrExplorer, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 03:19 (eight years ago) link
Hey Angel reminds me Robbie Williams' millennium, which for me is a good sign, and it works perfectly as a first song for the album. I do prefer fast 1D, when they go slow they tend to a coldplayish vibe, but 'fireproof ' and 'night changes' are two of my favorite 1D songs and they're very slow, as you say. So... Yeah.
