the lack of love would be more baffling if this weren't a very quiet and elusive record

INDEED

The full version looks like it's getting released on Friday (digital/12") and is 7+ minutes. WANT

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 7 December 2015 05:27 (ten years ago)

He should do a full remix album. The video is so good too.

Wow

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 27 February 2016 19:09 (ten years ago)

hell yeah. hairless toys didn't hit me at first but now i think it's amazing... i listened again keeping a couple comments in mind i'd read on the EOY 2015 thread, something about how 'evil eyes' switches gears into a boogie song four mins in. her previous album, which i love, even sounded a bit drab afterward in comparison.

new track is nice, hadn't seen the tweets so I wasn't expecting something new already.

ufo, Tuesday, 19 April 2016 13:42 (ten years ago)

This song is like a series of forks in the road, and she took the right one every time.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 19 April 2016 13:46 (ten years ago)

Yeah, this is great! Even though it's the sort of thing my pop-structured mind tends to find unpleasant, it works when Róisín does it.

daavid, Tuesday, 19 April 2016 14:20 (ten years ago)

just came here to post about the new album. nothing for 8 years then 2 albums inside 1 year. weird huh? last album is amazing, easily her best IMO.

by the way this thread is impossible to find.

piscesx, Tuesday, 19 April 2016 20:37 (ten years ago)

Hairless Toys was impressive but I still love Overpowered more than anything she's done, though.

daavid, Tuesday, 19 April 2016 21:16 (ten years ago)

album title is intriguing

'ten miles high' on repeat

Album sampler. Properly bonkers as expected. I feel like Róisín is now fully in her own world... and what a beautiful and mysterious world that is!

Róisín DGAF!

tbh I'm not into very much of this, at least at this early stage, but good on her

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 6 July 2016 03:55 (nine years ago)

It seems to lose a bit of momentum towards the second half. But the first four tracks or so have some incredible moments.

daavid, Wednesday, 6 July 2016 04:02 (nine years ago)

I love that the bass is used so sparsely (both here and in Hairless Toys) but when it's there, it's fucking there. No messing around.

daavid, Wednesday, 6 July 2016 04:12 (nine years ago)

this record is super fucking wacky. also "ten miles high" is a masterpiece

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 8 July 2016 17:19 (nine years ago)

I don't have any fully-formed opinions yet but this album is amazing.

ǂbait (seandalai), Saturday, 9 July 2016 00:42 (nine years ago)

New album is utterly bonkers.

chap, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:38 (nine years ago)

It sounds like Disco Volante era Mr Bungle in some sections.

chap, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:39 (nine years ago)

I'm not liking this new direction.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:39 (nine years ago)

I think I like it, but it'll take me a few listens to confirm.

chap, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:41 (nine years ago)

She has too powerful a voice and presence to murmur over slow tracks.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:42 (nine years ago)

It's not all that though. I get the impression that they're the kind of tracks which will reveal their underlying structure and power over time.

chap, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:45 (nine years ago)

"ten miles high" reminds me heavily of moloko

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:45 (nine years ago)

also idk if sustained murmuring is really a new direction for róisín

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:49 (nine years ago)

The beats tended to be kinetic ("Dear Miami").

I like "Ten Miles High" too.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:50 (nine years ago)

imo it's the best song from both albums

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:51 (nine years ago)

btw can someone tell me how to pronounce her first name? Is it RO-SHEEN?

I don't want to embarrass myself this weekend around fellow music nerds.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:53 (nine years ago)

iirc yes

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:56 (nine years ago)

Nervous Sleep is pretty extraordinary (this may be the one that Alfred is thinking of most with his "mumbling over slow tracks" description)

chap, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 15:06 (nine years ago)

Enjoying this a lot. It was less instant than Hairless Toys but I'm enjoying it more as a whole after a few plays. Some of it reminds me of a more mellow version of Ruby Blue.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 15:09 (nine years ago)

that's correct Alfred. The accents indicate an elongated vowel sound

whoa take her up to monto is really great. sort of like if all the weird sui generis organically sprouting ideas of hairless toys were pushed even further and the carefulness abandoned

^^^ yep

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 August 2016 12:40 (nine years ago)

like the surprise groove in "evil eyes" but happening all the time

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 August 2016 12:41 (nine years ago)

it's all much more labyrinthine than the way most of the tracks on Hairless Toys would slowly unfold. i don't enjoy it quite as much but it's definitely an incredible 2 hours or so that have come from those sessions

ufo, Wednesday, 3 August 2016 13:03 (nine years ago)

This album just gets better and better. Lip Service is my current favourite. I keep getting it stuck in my head.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 14 August 2016 23:19 (nine years ago)

It really does get better and better.
That bit in the middle of 'Thoughts Wasted' when the flutey noises start poppin' and the male vocal accompanies her is #1.

Serious contender for best of the year.

piscesx, Saturday, 7 January 2017 00:32 (nine years ago)

I seriously regret not seeing her in Chicago in November. I didn't take to Take Her Up to Monto as much as Hairless Toys, but I think I need to spend more time with it.

Love the moment on "Uninvited guests" where the devil may care slacker vibe turns into a gorgeous wide screen bridge. Roisin excels at these emotional shifts in songs, sections that change your perception of the narrative
