after several months of m/l continuous listening to all four monster and beyond future projects, i'd say beast mode def has the most interesting production, 56 nights and DS2 are most successful at being coherent wholes and sustaining moods throughout (esp. DS2), monster has some of the highest heights and is the most emotionally resonant overall
― slothroprhymes, Thursday, 15 October 2015 15:13 (ten years ago)
i agree with all that actually
― marcos, Thursday, 15 October 2015 16:26 (ten years ago)
actually i might say beast mode is more cohesive than 56 nights
― marcos, Thursday, 15 October 2015 16:27 (ten years ago)
ds2 starts off great, sags a little in the middle imo, but has a really good closing stretch (fwiw i have the non-deluxe version that ends w/ blood on the money). def has a very sustained mood throughout though

Really grateful for everyone's best of upthread. I've been playing these on shuffle for a few months but I've been having mixed feelings about this stage of his work. Both Future and Young Thug seem to have left behind the fast chatting bangers (Same Damn Time, Treasure etc) and gone for this reflective, smoothed out, more consistent but ultimately less hooky sound. Listening to these favourites put into a playlist is bringing it all home though - Just Like Bruddas is fantastic, as is March Madness and several others.
No love for Thought There Was A Drought though? I love the way 'gucci flip flops' seems to drip and drop over the beat.

hooks are definitely there on all these imo, sometimes i feel like future is nothing but hooks, "nursery rhymes" for real imo
― marcos, Friday, 16 October 2015 13:23 (ten years ago)
live from the gutter is nearly as good as anything on these 3 tapes imo
― johnny crunch, Friday, 16 October 2015 13:38 (ten years ago)
xp the hooks are there, but they feel more buried. not sure about nursery rhymes tbh.
― canoon fooder (dog latin), Friday, 16 October 2015 14:24 (ten years ago)
xp yeah live from the gutter is really good, diamonds dancing, digital dash, i'm the plug and jersey also p great to solid cuts from the future/drake tape (which is really just a future tape that drake jumps in on a few times other than 30 for 30 freestyle)

i dont agree with the ranking but liked her piece on monster quite a bit

oh yea it was great, i love garvey
― marcos, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 20:42 (ten years ago)
wrong but the Monster piece was ace
― alpine static, Thursday, 29 October 2015 00:45 (ten years ago)
i hear where she's coming from and appreciate her points but I just can't put the inconsistency/length of Monster ahead of something as tight and seamless as 56 Nights, despite its heights. Beast Mode? maybe.
― alpine static, Thursday, 29 October 2015 00:47 (ten years ago)
testament to her Pitch piece, tho, that she got me going back to listen to Monster again to see if i'm wrong
― alpine static, Thursday, 29 October 2015 00:48 (ten years ago)
whither be monster 2, I ask
― slothroprhymes, Sunday, 1 November 2015 14:13 (ten years ago)
bump bc we got all the other promised thanksgiving mixtapes where the hell is the future one
unless we all totally misinterpreted the "freebandz/eardrummer thanksgiving" tweet

― metro slothrop want some more (slothroprhymes), Sunday, 29 November 2015 18:58 (ten years ago)
did you think he was older or younger?
― lex pretend, Sunday, 29 November 2015 18:59 (ten years ago)
xp to j0rdan
tho we do live in a time when 38yo kanye west is somehow an avatar of twitter youth so
yeah i assumed he was like 4-5 years younger than that
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 29 November 2015 19:01 (ten years ago)
da connect album was released 12 years ago so it makes sense.
― ANU (sisilafami), Sunday, 29 November 2015 19:19 (ten years ago)
Future never had the air of a 20-year-old kid when he was coming up, it makes sense to me that he was 26-27 when he started getting famous, like Jay-Z or Nicki Minaj

best future social media content was that vid of the guy and his gf sitting in the car booming a future tune out the stereo and she's looking dead at the camera totally expressionless with just her head bobbing in amazingly hypnotic fashion
does anyone know what i mean cos i can't find it now
― r|t|c, Monday, 30 November 2015 00:45 (ten years ago)
So I like DS2 fine and should probably re listen to the mixtapes but I feel out of the loop as to why this is supposed to be another level from his earlier stuff. Even Honest which I don't like, "I Be U" is more my level than any of his current stuff.

'i be u' is a love song & more a pop song than a rap one
its probably become a meme at this pt but it doesnt surprise me that this stuff resonated more, bc it has the trappings of more autobiographical tortured soul vibe than aiming for more 'universal' vibes
